Eating Less: Say Goodbye to Overeating by Gillian Riley. Anyone want to start with me?

TheShapeofYou · 23/03/2018 08:34

I've ordered this book and it arrives tomorrow. Have never done it before but have read some reviews and watched the short TEDx talk on YouTube and am hopeful it will help me.

I'm 10-14lbs over where I'd like to be, so I'm back in the middle-top of the healthy BMI range. I'm a SAHM and over eat because I'm bored/surrounded by food/emotional eater.

Does anyone want to join me in a support thread please?! I'm also hoping to start C25K for the first time ever on Monday Smile

I have been reading this book on and off and it seems quite sensible ('Brain Over Binge' is also quite good along the same lines). I like the idea that nothing is banned, if I don't give in to a craving now, I can always have it later but it's my choice so taking back control of it IYKWIM.

That sounds good! I've read some old threads and someone said the book is good, but she has to read it every month Sad I think I'll probably have to re-read a few times before it sinks in/to help me keep on track.

I highly recommend Gillian's webinar. Gillian is the real thing, a rarity in the 'diet industry'

I've been following Gillian Riley's approach for a few years. It's a breath of fresh air in a murky fog of diet-speak. She really does talk common sense and helps you unpick all the layers of dysfunctional eating and thinking. I slipped out and tried conventional diets along the way, only to realise ive made a mistake and that they aren't working for me long term and only add to my dysfunctional eating.

Re-reading my post it sounds like I've slipped out of GRs approach - I've only slipped out temporarily on occasions and have come back to it again

That all sounds really positive MaggieMay23 Smile I know it's normal to try and blame someone or something for your overeating, but I really do think me joining slimming world at 17 and doing it numerous times over the years hasn't helped. I've only ever needed to lose a stone, So never been obese as such, just creeping into the overweight category and clothes not fitting.

alphaechokiwi is that available online? Sorry if I'm being stupid!

@TheShapeofYou the webinar can be booked through the Eating less website eatingless.com/
Have people got the books yet? What do you think so far?

I've done so many diets I'm embarrassed to list them and my stash of diets books, not counting the ones I've donated to charity shops. I got to the point of not knowing what to eat or when to eat

My issue seems to be about choice - I will happily comply with a diet for a few weeks then I start to rebel Gillian Riley helps you understand all this and gives you simple tools to help you cope with this

I'm on Chapter 7 - pretty plausible so far. I'm sticking to Times and Plans; managing not to talk about it IRL and finding the emphasis facing down 'addictive desires' pretty liberating.

Trickiest thing for me so far is that DH does most of our cooking at weekends, which makes it harder to take control, especially as she's so clear that talking about it is a bad idea!

Also slightly concerned that overeating wheat may be affecting my general health... reluctant to be that person, although also trying to acknowledge that may be my addiction speaking!

MaggieMay23 wow, don't think I can afford £270! But thanks.

My book arrived this afternoon but I've not had a chance to read any yet. At home tomorrow with my preschooler so he might be getting more iPad time than normal Wink

Chapter 1 completed. She is definitely speaking to me! I answered yes to most of the things on the list of characteristics when thinking about food.

Can't believe anyone would be indifferent to chocolate covered raisins Grin

Ordered the book and it came on Friday. Got a couple of assignments due in over the next few days. I will read it later in the week, then hopefully eat a lot less over next weekend!

@TheShapeofYou @Utrecht etc how's it going? Are you finding Gillian's Riliey's approach helpful?

Sounds good may get it on my kindle. Currently reading 'the marshmallow test' all about self control and willpower- fascinating but I've done nothing but eat cake all day 🤦‍♀️

I'm certainly eating better - I hardly ever eat random cakes or biscuits any more, which I used to eat almost compulsively if they were around. I'm snacking less in general. I'm not following any particular food plan other than 'eat less; eat more healthily'. I have just ordered one of those recipe books by Dr Whatsisname so may use that for ideas. I do try to use the Times - tgat's not so relevant though because I only get the opportunity to eat at quite specific times at work. I don't always remember to Plan what I'm about to eat, though, and I haven't really cut my alcohol intake.

One thing I do like is allowing myself to feel tempted, but resisting. There are loads of chocolates and biscuits in a particular cupboard at work, and I like to just open it and look at them every once in a while!

What about the you?

Eek. I got half way through reading it and found it hard going and gave up - whoops. Must start reading it again, esp as I've put on another couple of pounds Sad

That's great @Utrecht!,
@TheShapeofYou I find Gillian Riley's book ditching the diets much easier to read and digest - sorry about the pun.
I'm re reading it and taking notes etc. I'm relieved that it's up to me what I eat - even when I'm following a healthy eating plan I start feeling rebellious - my big issues I think are choice and rebellion

Is this a new book by GR, I think I've read her stuff previously?

I have trouble connecting my eating behaviour with my weight - for example, I'm idly wondering what it would be like to not be overweight at the same time as buying a load of comfort food for yet another lonely night in a hotel.

I can't seem to equate one to the other.

Same here Radio- the thought is always there but putting it into practice is quite another

@aglassofroseplease thanks for the recommendation - I'll have a look in the library tomorrow as not keen on buying more books.

@RadioDorothy no it's not new. I'm just a bit rubbish with reading half a book!

@Utrecht well done on resisting the chocolates and biscuits at work, that's awesome Smile

I have a few good days, then have a bad one and pick at biscuits and cheese etc my appetite is still through the roof. Bugs me having to eat every 3 hours or so. Having a colonoscopy next month due to random gastro issues, and kinda hoping my consultant finds something to explain my appetite and weight gain...! Fully expecting it to be IBS, and if it is then he said he'd help me with a diet plan (low FODMAP most probably, which is not conducive to weight loss from what I can tell...).

It's this one www.amazon.co.uk/Ditching-Diets-lose-weight-maintain/dp/0956105114/ref=tmmpapswatch0?encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21
I need to read and re-read her books to get it into my thick head!! It must be sinking in - or it's by osmosis as I was talking to someone recently about diets etc and found myself spouting the Eating less message verbatim
I find the times and plans and the outline really good tools to use

@TheShapeofYou good luck with your colonoscopy- I have Ibs and find it's worse if I eat too much sugar and bread
