Fruit helping or hurting?

I've got around 100lb to lose Sad

I'm trying to be reasonable low carb without going crazy. But I've been struggling with this because I like to eat a lot of fruit. This is partly to stop me having unhealthy snacks and also because I have IBS and need a lot of fibre.

On a normal day I'll usually have an apple, a pear, a plum and often some berries. I try to avoid grapes and bananas because of sugar. I'll often have an orange etc as well. On top of that I'm having tons of veg, but trying to stick to the lower carb stuff.

Is the fruit going to hamper weight loss? I'm calorie counting and staying within my limit, but I'm over my target of 90g carbs every day. Should I ditch the fruit for something even more low carb? If I do that, what is the best way to add fibre to my diet?

Thanks for the help!

According to MN Low Carb Bootcamp, in the first two weeks you shouldn't have any fruit. At all. Starting from Week 3, you can occasionally have berries.

Apples and pears are high in carbohydrates.

To get more fibre, you need to eat more raw vegetables, such as lettuce, spinach and celery and to drink at least two litres of water.

Thank you! I'm worried that if I cut fruit entirely it will be really bad for my IBS. I'll definitely add in more berries and less apples / pears though, and that's good to know about the spinach / celery etc :)

I lost nearly two stones last year just cutting sugar and processed foods. I ate tons of fruit. Bananas, grapes, the lot. I figured it's got to be better than all the chocolate I was eating!

I'd see how you go on for a few weeks, you can always tweak it if you don't lose. I'm strongly of the opinion that people who are too hard on themselves fall off the wagon soonest..

So many posters on these boards are obsessed with low carbing, but there are other options. I’ve lost and maintained weight for years without the need to demonise all fruit and just eat berries Hmm

As long as you stay under your calorie limit, I personally think eating tons of fruit and veg is not a bad thing at all, especially with your IBS issues. Good luck Smile

If this is what you're eating, then you aren't eating a low carb diet!

You'll get plenty of fibre if you get your carbs from vegetables rather than fruit.

And one thing you might find is that your IBS lessens/disappears when you go truly low carb. It's what happened to me, and to a lot of other Bootcampers.

Agree withBIWI - you’re not low carbing
