I weighed myself for the first time in six months yesterday and tipped the scales at 20 stone 9 pounds. I'm disgusted but more than that, scared. I've put on 9 pounds. Why didn't I take action when I was 20 stone nothing FFS?
I am scared I am going to be 25 stone in a few years, hardly getting off my chair, my poor DD running about after me and on the highway to my grave before 50. (I'm 43). I need a kick up the arse.
I had a gastric band fitted in 2007 and got down to 15st (which still sounds a lot but I am tall and a large build so it looked ok, my ideal would be about 13st and a size 16) but had the band loosened due to problems an conceiving DD. The band has given me awful problems. I can't stomach certain foods or even the same foods at different times and I often have to go to the toilet to vomit. So I have developed huge issues around food and I mostly eat in private. Yet despite the vomiting I have still put on weight due to eating foods that 'slip down' easily i.e. greasy things, chocolate, etc.
I can't pay to have the band taken out and they don't do it on the NHS so I have to live with this. Luckily I am quite an introvert so don't have a huge social life or get asked out for meals or anything.
It's very hard to lose weight because my DD is very small, due to being premature and IUGR. She's six and weighs 2 stone 8. (Weighed her yesterday at the same time as me). So I have to keep foods in the house to fatten her up like chocolate and ice cream
Sorry, this has turned into a bit of an outpouring! I didn't mean to start telling my life story! Only I think that by talking and not keeping things to myself maybe it will kick start me and be the wake up call I need.
Please somebody get me started. Point me in the right direction. What should I do, I've veered so far off course I don't know what's normal any more :(
I think I would like to try low carb and join one of the boot camps. If someone could let me know more about that I would be very grateful. Thanks for reading.
P.S. I have painted quite a bleak picture, but I do enjoy life most of the time :)

Making the decision to do something is always the first step!

Have you been on the low carb board? I'm sure they will be starting a new one soon for the New Year, but just reading through should give you some ideas of what you could eat if you were to follow that way of eating, and how to deal with cravings and 'bumps'.

There's also a general weight loss chat where everyone is lovely. They talk about golden days, and that's a great way to approach losing weight. A day at a time. And if you have a bad day, that's what it is - a bad day. Tomorrow is a new day!

Given your history, though, I'd speak to your GP before you start anything.

Good luck in finding what works for you!

@TakemedowntoPotatoCity, well done for facing up to your weight problem - the thoughts you describe sound so distressing and it would be so much easier to try and ignore it all. You are brave.

I wonder if your GP could arrange for you to speak to a dietician. You've probably already done so in relation to your surgery, but what you say about having lost perspective on normal eating is very much part of their expertise, and it sounds as though medical input would be advisable in your situation. You also mention your daughter's food intake needs monitoring - perhaps a specialist could also recommend how to increase her weight healthily so you both get the best nutrition.

Have you heard about Overeaters Anonymous? It's a twelve-step programme for anyone who feels they've lost control of their eating. Maybe it would help you to connect with others in the same boat.

Best wishes to you.
