Is this considered obese?

Potterhead113 · 28/07/2017 11:49

I am 5ft6.5 and 93kg and my BMI puts me at obese but I'm a size 12/14 in clothes which I didn't think would be seen as obese. I know I'm a little overweight but I don't have a double chin or a purtruding gut or anything that I would consider to be features of obesity.
It's making me really upset when I go to the doctors because they keep saying I'm obese and at risk of health problems and should lose 4 stone but I think I'd be way to thin at that weight. What do you think? Am I just deluded and I am actually obese :(

93kg is 14.5 stone
At that height I would say yes that would be quite overweight/obese
Sorry

Yes it is I'm afraid, check the NHS BMi thingy.

I'm same height and 13stone and that's still over a stone heavier than the top end of where I should be and also 12/14.

Yes you are still obese even if you look ok in clothes you will be carrying a lot of internal fat around your organs.
That being said it's your body and it's up to you to decide if the extra weight is problem or not.
Obesity is a medical term its not subjective but it's not a value judgement either.

Never pay attention to the BMI scale it's madness and doesn't take into account.muscle mass, most sports people are morbidly obese and we all know that's not true. I was a size 26 once, that is obese, a size 12/14 like I am now is perfectly normal, you know if you are healthy or not, ignore the shitty BMI (I'm obese on that)

gamerwidow · 28/07/2017 12:24

At size 26 you would have been morbidly obese rather than obese. BMI is usually a good indicator unless you are a professional athlete or body builder.

I think BMI is pretty accurate in the main. It's the outliers where it doesn't work so well

Are you muscular? I'm way heavier than I should be accordung to BMI but very muscular. I'm still carrying a bit of fat but even if I got down to 14% body fat (my current goal) I'd be overweight on the BMI scale.

At that height though, 93kg does seem quite heavy.

I am 5ft 4ins tall and 10st 2lbs. around 64kgs and could not imagine myself almost 50% heavier and still fitting in Size 12 -14 clothes. You are fortunate to be 93kgs and only feel a little overweight, and how you feel is the only thing that really matters.

I have been a competitive swimmer for a good 15 years of my life and now I swim 4 times a week to keep fit so I suppose I may have quite a bit of muscle weight as I can see my leg muscles and top ab muscles. sigh

I think if you have a lot of muscle then it would be more realistic for you test your body fat and work out from that whether you are fat or not. If you are already in the healthy range for fat percentage then you don't have much, or even anything, to loose. If your fat content is a bit high then you do have the possibility of losing weight while keeping your current muscle mass, and it would probably be healthier for you.

I am exactly the same height as you and weigh 92.2kg (weighed this morning, down from 100kg in 5 weeks, which I'm happy about). I definitely look obese, going by standard measurements my hips are size 12/14, my chest is size 16 and my waist is size 20. I tend to wear tops in a size 18 and trousers in size 16 and everything has to have a LOT of ease in the waist. I see a personal trainer and I do have muscles, but not more muscular than an averagely fit person, so I'm sure that I have a lot of fat which I will need to loose.

Ah in that case with your background as a sportsperson BMI may well not be a good measure for you.
Try looking at hip to waist ratio instead.

This website gives Michael Phelp's BMI as 23.6. Other sportspeople's BMIs, too - it's quite interesting.

I'm 5'8" and weigh around 72kg and am a size 12-14. I am small at the top and have huge leg and hip bones and a fair bit of muscle. I cannot imagine being shorter, almost 3 stone heavier and fitting in the same clothes!

Where do you shop? If M&S or Next or somewhere else that has gone a bit crazy with vanity sizing, then a 12-14 is obese. If it is somewhere like Zara, then you may not be obese if you wear a size 12-14.
I think BMI is generally quite a good indicator but, as others have said, it doesn't work if you are very muscular. Do you still do a lot of weight training?

I'm 5'7", weight fluctuates between 11.5 and 12 stone and I wear a size 14, I have a small bust. I feel overweight, I would like to be around 10.5 stone.

I wouldn't have fit into size 14 clothes when I was 14 stone. I wear jeans from Debenhams (RJR/Red Herring) and tops from H&M/M&S/supermarkets.

gamerwidow what do you mean by hip to waist ratio? How different should they be?

I normally shop in New Look/Topshop/H&M. Nowhere with vanity sizing, if anything they run small

I mostly wear size 14 jeans because that's the only thing that fits my legs as they are big and muscular :( but they are baggy on my waist, sometimes only a 16 fits my legs and I have that dreaded butt gap

Gosh I am 5'6" and 83kg and am a size 16. I consider myself very overweight but not obese. I have no idea how you fit into size 12/14 clothes!

93 kilograms =
14.645 stones

That's heavy for a 6 ft tall man. Personal choice etc. But I don't agree that you are healthy at that weight and height.

I consider my legs to be muscular too, thanks to ballet and tap classes from aged 3-18, however I don't factor this in when I look at my BMI

New look? I weigh less and am 5.4 foot and struggle with 12/14 in new look sometimes in a lot of the styles. I know I'm over weight (13.1) but I'm also 4 months post partum. My normal weight is usually around 9.8/9.10 (put on a lot of pregnancy weight) but really if you feel good you feel good so it doesn't matter what the scales/bmi say as long as you are healthy

Most pro athletes AREN'T morbidly obese, what a ridiculous thing to say. In any case, even a fit average person really has no business comparing themselves to a pro athlete training dozens of hours a week and eating a specialised diet. It's one thing to acknowledge that BMI is flawed and another to throw common sense completely out the window.

You know you're overweight, and that is a very high weight for your height. Why not think about losing some and see how you feel?

I understand why you are all confused because I am too. I have a flat stomach as well. I guess my body is very messed up Grin
