What was the straw that broke the camels back?

What was the final straw that forced you to lose weight once and for all?

I've always been bigger and since I can remember have always been attempting to lose weight since the age of about 11, when really I wasn't that overweight at all.

So almost 20 years later I'm bigger than ever despite constantly starting and failing diets. I'm so uncomfortable in all of my clothes (I'm size 22) and am achey and tired all of the time. We've got our first foreign holiday booked next year and know I can't go looking and feeling how I do. Not to mention that I would probably need a seat belt extender for the plane. I feel such a terrible failure and role model to my children.

I have so many reasons to lose weight but, despite how utterly miserable I am, nothing seems to give me the push to get real and do something! Two close family members have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes yet I'm still not getting serious Sad

What was the final straw for you and what did you do to put the wheels in motion?

Having to buy size 16 clothes for my holiday last year and then looking enormous in the holiday pictures

I've changed to a far more sensible but not perfect diet but increased my exercise massively by joining a brilliant group, 1.5 stone down and lots of new friends

Finding out that people cunts had been talking about how much weight I'd put on. Three stone crept on over about three years after having DD2 and eating too much curry with too much wine.

I've since lost over two stone in three months with Slimming World. Nearly at target. Boom.

I knew I'd been steadily gaining weight for approx 4 yrs I tried, and failed, to lose weight for my wedding, which I pretended I was ok with. The final straw was seeing a picture of me with my newborn nephew, I looked a state. it still took 5 months to join slimming world, now 13 months on I'm 4st lighter and wear size 10/12 and feel much better about myself

Wow some fab weight losses! Well done!

I've had some success with SW in the past and am wondering if I should start back at it.

Whatever I do, I need to do something!

Do it, OP. Just do it.

I love SW. But I do adapt it as there are parts of the plan I don't agree with and don't lose weight if I follow (e.g. Unlimited starchy carbs and mullerlights Hmm). But otherwise it's taught me how to make lean protein, veg and fruit my staples.

I'm in. I've lost 3 stone, 3 times in my lifetime, always been fat. Now size 20 and pretending I'm content, when really I despise myself and simply prefer being lost in food.

I know I can do it, but lack motivation when I know it always creeps back on eventually. Need to get back in the zone...but what to do to get started?

I'm in too. Final straw came recently when took my DD swimming and found my hips touching squeezing against both sides of the handrails going down the steps into the pool. I felt so ashamed it had got so bad.

I have 5 stone to lose. Correction, as of today I have 4 and a half stone to lose (whoop! Never tried slimming world before but becoming a convert)

I reached a weight where everything was awful - my clothes didn't sit right, I was tired all the time and sleeping badly, the littlest thing made me exhausted, I had no energy for my kids, and I just thought, enough now.

I put on so much weight most of my clothes don't fit. Lost around a stone then lost and put on the same few lb for quite a while. Am now back on the straight and narrow. I need to get my BMI below 35 to start Clomid. My next appointment is in just over 4 weeks so that has really focused me to pick up the pace and be very strict to get the last chunk off to get under 35. Hoping to see a good result on the scales tomorrow after 1st week of being super strict. Good luck with your weight loss.

I was in a photo for an event at work, someone that I hadn't seen for a bit said 'blimey you've packed on some weight' I was horrified, I thought I looked quite ok; then I saw the photo, I was easily the biggest person there.

As horrible as his comment was it gave me the push to do something, I've lost 2 stone at SW since January, got a bit more to go, but feel so much happier.

Straw for me was running a half marathon but got a really rubbish time.... seeing my time slip to nearer a 3 hour half marathon from a 2 and a half previous average was horrific for me

But..... I joined SW and have lost nearly 2 1/2 stone now.... bit more to go to target and I can run again

I think you really have to want to do it. I am trying my best at the moment to get down to aroind pre children weight of 9st, current weight 11st 3lb starting weight 3 weeks ago was 11st 12lbs. We have our first family holiday in Cyprus next May half term and it is at a aqua holiday resort so want to feel confident in swim wear and not to fat to join in.

I've worked in the same place for over 10 years. There are three of my colleagues who have been very overweight for most of this time. One needs a hip replacement, one is diabetic and one is suffering various problems following a gastric by pass last year. None of them are in good health. My size varies, it has been up and down between just under 9 stone and 13 stone several times in my adult life. This year I'm starting to think about retirement in a few years time. I want to wear nice clothes, with fixed waist bands and tucked in tops. I don't want my feet to hurt in the summer. I want to be able to go riding again without feeling embarrassed about being given the weight bearing cob. I want to be able to go to see my GP without fearing a lecture. I want to avoid the minor health issues that are mounting up for my brother who is more over weight than me. I suppose all in all the reasons I need to get rid of this weight for good outweigh the comfort of sitting on the sofa "treating" myself. So far I've lost my first half stone on the Blood sugar diet, and I'm off to buy a new bike on Saturday, I'm just hoping my views stay this way.

Being told my BMI was too high for referral to a Consultant re my very painful gallbladder.

I bought a Fitbit so I could see my steps whilst walking dog and made the walks longer. Recorded what I at on Nutracheck and made sure I ate less than I burned. Nothing has been banned and I work my calorie deficit over a week to allow flexibility. I'm down over 4.5 stone so far and started C25K recently. Was never interested in jogging before but DH and I were up and out at 6.15am. Feel much fitter now and bounced back really quickly from surgery last month.

Don't over think it, just for now pick something and start. If you don't feel it is for you long term then you can always try something. Just stop putting it off as each week you delay you could be a pound or two lighter. Over time those pounds really add up and make a difference.

Being skint helps. Walk the Tube stop instead of getting in the crush. Forgoing trashy nick nacks like crisps and booze. A harder bed. But it is a gradual thing, with lots of things going towards the push. Even then it can be six months before the body catches on and says, oh, okay, I see what you're doing here - you want to lose weight? Until then, it will be grudging and think you are up to something, or just ignore your weight loss attempts.

It wasn't like I hadn't tried before, but just gyming it gets you fit yet still overweight imo.

Mine were both at work.
One was a weight limit for equipment we use (we work at height sometimes and it is quite a low limit....)
The other was someone from work commenting on social media 'Is that really Stop?! We must have two Stops in the company!'. She thought it wasn't me as it didn't show my face and I had put on a stone. I saw her at the beginning of summer and she congratulated me assuming I was pregnant.

Great thread - yup I've been congratulated several times by acquaintances on my 'pregnancy'. My stomach is/was so big compared to my arms and legs I'm kind of not insulted anymore.

My turning point kind of came after Christmas when I cut out sugar to avoid diabetes. I initially slimmed down but now seem quite far again. This week for the first time in a year I really actively tried to get over 10,000 steps on my Fitbit every day.

Also stopped eating after 8pm the other week.

It's a long road and I'm crawling along, but would like to get to comfortable size 12 rather than 14-16.

That was only 4 weeks ago and I've joined SW and half a stone down now Smile
