Strange Weight loss

Bella912 · 14/05/2017 20:58

Am starting to get worried. I have been around 11 stone for the past 15 years and have always struggled to loose and keep off weight, my heaviest weight was 12 stone 4.

Something strange has happened in that I have lost a lot of weight without trying. Nothing has changed but this morning I weighed in at 9stone 1. I have lost a stone since late January. I am starting to worry if I could be sick as I don't understand how I am loosing the weight when I have struggled all my life to stay anywhere in the 10 stone mark. Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm not complaining but am getting concerned. I am 42, 5ft5. I am by no means underweight but this loss is very very strange. Any ideas?

Hopefully it's nothing sinister, but you should go to your GP to get it checked.

Have you noticed any changes to appetite or anything?

I do have less of an appetite but not enough to make me loose all this. To keep myself in the 10 stones I was walking up to 40miles a week. I got pneumonia and put weight back on as it took me ages to recover and I never got back into the walking.

Why I'm worried is this happened to my mum when she was 50 and it turned out she has renal failure. However it was caused by a condition I don't have and it's not hereditary. I was cleared to be her kidney doner and I wouldn't have been considered if there was a chance I could get it too.

I know something is not right but as I am in the middle of the healthy range for my height I don't think a doctor would take it seriously.

I do feel very tired all the time I have so little energy and I would say my mood is pretty low.

Your doctor will take it seriously of you tell him exactly what you told us. Did you notice your clothes getting much losser? Has anyone commented? Go to GP

Sometimes people can eat less without even realising. I accidentally list weight since Cadbury became disgusting because I didn't replace those smacks with something else I just stopped eating them. Have you kept a food diary to check that you haven't been eating less. If you haven't it's worth seeing a doctor because it's a little unusual. Xx

Yes I literally have no clothes I have gone from a 14/16 to a 8/10. Lots of people have commented yes. At first I was just so happy the weight was coming off but this for me is not normal I have never been this weight since I was about 18.

No I haven't done that but will start doing so. Have to agree about cadburys what have they done to it?

There are all sorts of things that can cause it. Could be your thyroid (the tiredness might be consistent with that) or any number of other things. I agree that the GP will definitely take it seriously.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

This happened to a friend of mine, he put it down to the stress of his dad being ill, a complicated house move and other things. He was also very tired and when he finally went to the GP, ended up having positive tests for diabetes.

Super heathy, sporty guy, no family history, he was stunned, but they caught it soon enough for them to be able to treat him safely and he now injects insulin every day.

He's totally fine, manages his diabetes and is very well.

You should definitely get it checked by your GP. Unexplained weight loss will be investigated, please don't think you will be wasting his time especially as you have other symptoms. It might be nothing but best to get checked

Thanks everyone. I think I will get it checked out. I just thought the doctor would see it as a positive thing that I am in the healthy weight range now. Have just remember the sweats too, not sure if it's related but I have started to sweat a lot.

Please see your doctor and get it checked out. If you have lost that much weight without trying & previously struggled to do so then its worth investigation just to be sure everything is alright.

Have just phoned up and managed to get an app later today with gp. Am a little anxious now I hadn't expected so many people here to say see a doctor. Will update once I have been. Thanks for taking the time to read.

Good luck at the doctors today. They have added palm oil to Cadburys, that's what ruined it 😷

The doctor will take it seriously - weight loss with no explanation can be a symptom of something sinister...it can also be a plethora of other, much less sinister, things - not trying to terrify you, just making the point that it is taken seriously, you will not be laughed at.

If you're having sweats as well (particularly at night), I'd ask the GP for liver function tests. Sudden weight loss and fatigue, as well as the sweats, could be a sign of liver problems. Best of luck OP Flowers

It's funny you say that as I do have a dilated bile duct so it could be something to do with that as it would attack the liver. I'm worried now

Definitely mention that to the GP. Are there any other symptoms you've noticed? Even minor ones that don't seem related?

OP but the one person I know who had this turned out to have kidney issues.

but they were sorted with medication. It took her a while to go to the doc because she wasn't feeling unwell and was mostly just puzzled.

so do go, because it might be something that's easily sorted now. Flowers

Extreme tiredness, dizzy spells and just general fatigue really. My mood is very low a lot of the time. I also wee a lot. Can be every 10 minutes or so. I wake about 3 times in the night desperate for the toilet. Bowel motions are very runny too (tmi sorry).

My mum had exactly the same thing and she was actually at end stage renal failure. (Had a transplant now). However as I mentioned above it was caused by high blood pressure something I don't have. Actually that's a thought I had a surgery earlier in the year and they mentioned how low my blood pressure was.

Is there any family history of thyroid problems OP?
A lot of your symptoms sound like Overactive/ Hyperthyroidism.
Good luck for later

Frequent urination is a symptom of diabetes too. Google luck at the docs!

My mum had to have her parathyroid gland removed post transplant but other than that no other history. Will see what the doctor says.

Your symptoms are almost exactly identical to my cousin who lost two stone in a matter of weeks due to a thyroid issue.
