Is it really possible to lose weight on a high fat diet?

It must be the only diet I have never tried. I have one stone to lose but I struggle with sugar cravings , the pain of hunger, lightheartedness and bad breath when I diet. A friend mentioned a high fat diet would keep me satiated. I am reluctant to try. Does it work and if so, would you please give me an example of what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Many thanks.

I'm trying to do this at the moment. It has curbed my sugar craving a bit and helps me feel fuller.
Breakfast: scrambled eggs with butter and cream. Coffee with cream
Lunch: salad with ham, cheese and avocado.
Tea: salmon or chicken with butter and lemon or a cream sauce with salad or vegetables.

It sounds so fat heavy I worry about the fat content as I was brought up to think low fat everything but I feel calmer as not so strong cravings and the weight is coming off.

Also Total yoghurt is high protein and high fat so add some berries and a splash of honey and it's not too bad for a pudding without too much refined sugar (apart from the honey of course).

Thank you eyeoresancerre.
And of course I meant lightheadedness, not lightheartedness.

I have just lost nearly 2st on a low-carb, high-fat diet. It is the only thing that works for me. I don't crave sugar any more (I still want it, of course). I never feel lighteaded when I am hungry - just a sort of proper, "clean" hunger.

The first three days are the hardest. Do not count calories at the beginning. Just get rid of the sugar in your system. After a few days, the cravings go away.

A typical day for me is :

  • No breakfast (I am not hungry in the mornings. On the rare occasions when I am hungry I will have eggs).
  • Lunch : a big salad with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cucumber, ham or chicken, cheese and dressing.
  • Mid-afternoon snack : raw carrots (a big high in sugar but satisfying to chew), ham and cheese.
  • Evening : steak with green beans (sautéed in butter) and cheese.

If I really want something sweet or carby, I will have it just before a workout - it does not seem to throw me off track this way..

I agree any hunger is "clean" and you can wait till a meal, it's not the "I must stuff my face now in crap carbs " hunger. My stomach doesn't feel bloated and for me that is the main factor in whether I feel "fat" or not

Thank you Gizzi. How many calories do you think you consume a day, roughly?

Yes. Absolutely. I'm living proof.

I'm on the blood sugar diet. 8-12 weeks of 800cal, high fat, low carb. (Important to read the book to understand the science behind it). Lost 2.5 stone in 12 weeks. Now on round 2 after 4 weeks maintenance. Another 4lbs gone this week.

I find it easy despite being a veggie who loves food.

Thank you Titti and congratulations on the weigh loss! How many calories do you think you consume a day, roughly and could you give me a menu sample?

I didn't say in my post, 800cals.

Weekdays I eat 3 times - around 11am, 3pm and 8pm. No snacks. Generally I eat full fat Greek yogurt with frozen berries and ground flaxseed for breakfast (around 200 cals), soup or salad for lunch (70-200 cals) and curry with cauli rice/stir fry with quorn/omelette/mini fry up for dinner (250-400 cals). If I have spare cals I'll have some nuts and very dark chocolate or coffee with double cream. I drink lots of water and fruit tea through the day and take a multi vitamin. I find it really easy.

I've lost 7 stone on a high fat low carb ketogenic diet. I've not been hungry at all on it.

Breakfast is usually bacon and eggs with avocado or something quick like pre made egg muffins.

Lunch is chicken with salad including lots of cheese, maybe a boiled egg or more avocado and olive oil.

Dinner is sometimes steak cooked in butter and broccoli sauteed in bacon fat leftover from breakfast. With melted butter for dipping in the steak.

I've gone from 18 stone 9 to currently 11 stone 5lbs. Never able to lose a pound with ww or sw.

Start with //www.dietdoctor.com it's where I began. Btw fat isn't bad for us. The science never supported the theory.

Meán to add that I eat 1500-2000 calories a day and use intermittent fasting days. Eating 2000 calories is great fun. Dont eat low calorie for too long as youll slow your metabolism. Make sure to balance high calorie days with some fasting ... Skipping breakfast becomes super easy on high fat.

I lost 2 stone last year on LCHF diet. However the last stone doesn't seem to want to shift so I am also doing intermittent fasting in the hope that will kick-start my metabolism.

It's relatively easy to follow the LCHF way of eating. I do miss toast sometimes, and that's hard when 18 year old ds is always making it, but I just resist.

Why don't you try for a couple of weeks? And if it works for you, keep going. As a pp said, the Diet doctor website is good. I also read a book by Jason Fung called "The Obesity Code" which gave the science about why high fat isn't a problem but carbohydrates are. I felt more confident after reading that.

Good luck with the weight loss

Hi. Please can I jump in? I know Low Carb works for me. I lost nearly 3 stone and then, for a number of reasons, did not continue with it, and am 2 stone up! I understand it, can do it but just cannot motivate myself. Did you join dietdoctor and did it help keep you on track? I need something structured I think.

Haven't joined joined anything. Bought the BSD book for about £4 and joined the Facebook support group. Otherwise it's just getting into it.

Yes it works for dh (it doesn't work for everyone though) He has 2 eggs and mushrooms|tomatoes fried in butter for breakfast. Salmon with a thai dressing, grilled in olive oil and soya sauce and grated courgettes and or salad for lunch. Then a lamb chop or steak with plenty of veg. and or salad (no potatoes or bread at all).

He snacks on pecans, macadamias some fruit etc. He has lost about 3 stone but won't give up coffee with honey so it's not coming off as fast as it could! He DID give up wine but that is creeping back in now !
To speed up your metabolic rate take turmeric or ginger supplements they work really well for health too.

Hello again! Depending on the days, I eat between 800 and 2000kcal / day. I would say about 1300-1500 average. I exercise about 30 minutes a day.

I don't do the high protein\fat, weight loss but I keep off the 3 stone I lost by still using the Paul Mackenna way of eating and plenty of fruit and veg, some protein Like tofu or salmon. I always include linseeds in my home made seasonal fruit smoothies (oh no dairy). The creaminess come from ground almonds which are sooo delicious my mum didn't know that there was no dairy in my smoothie! Oh and btw I have never counted a calorie in my life !

Also evening primrose oil and olive oil, but hardly any saturated fat , it doesn't suit me.
