1000 calories a day?

lifesjoys · 29/04/2017 23:09

2 weeks today, I have been on a 1000-1200 calorie a day diet.

Each day, I eat a bowl of bran flakes & either chilli con carne or spaghetti bolognase.

I may also have a 5kcal jelly pot if I have any!

I hit all my nutrient targets or as close to.

If I'm doing okay on it, can I carry on??

I've lost 35lbs in nearly 5 weeks.

Yes carry on - no such thing as body goes into starvation mode that people love to spout. As long as you are getting all the nutrients you need, are within a recommended bmi guideline and feel well there's no reason to stop. WELL DONE - losing weight is hard!

What's your basal metabolic rate? Can your body cope on so few calories? I'm short and not very big so 1000 calories would be fine for me, but a bigger person would struggle to run their body on so little. If you're hitting all your nutrient targets you must be following a balanced diet, what aren't you using to track it?

Carry on for a while but would be sensible to slowly up this as you reach a goal weight, otherwise it'll all just come back on when you stop as you can't stay on 1000 calories forever.

Paper doll you are talking rubbish. Theres no reason for the weight to go when she finishes dieting just because she is eating 1000 cals a day now! The only effect eating fewer calories will have is she will lose weight quicker. If she eats more than her required maintenance calories after she has finished dieting she will put on weight but that has absolutely buggar all to do with what she is eating now.

Christ it's scary what "advice" people are willing to dish out on public forums...

You're consuming too little calories. 1200 should be the absolute minimum really. Are you exercising too? If not you need to. You'll be left with loose skin and a flabby body.

Pigwitch - how on earth can you possibly know the OP will have loose skin and a flabby body? Also on what basis do you "advise" that 1000 is too little calories to consume?

She's lost 5lb a week - that's a lot ! People who lose weight quickly lose their skin tone - their body can't keep up. I've done it - speaking from experience! I now run and do core strength exercises to stay toned. You can be skinny and untoned.

Unless you are morbidly obese, 7lb a week is a dangerous rate of weight loss.

Report
Pigwitch · 01/05/2017 13:49

Oh yes Pickachew it's 7lb a week not 5lb Blush that's even worse.

Loubilou09 · 01/05/2017 13:52

You are not her though are you Pig? You can say what your experiences are yes but you can't hand on heart comment on someone else can you?

I know someone who hasn't exercised and has lost weight at the same rate (actually even quicker as she is on 600 cals per day) and she isn't flabby and untoned so you are wrong that.

Why is 7lb a week loss "dangerous" what absolute tosh!!!! On what grounds is losing fat from your body dangerous whatever the rate you lose it?

People really need to get their facts straight before spouting rubbish on the Internet....

Loubilou I'm interested in what you're saying. I've heard the 'starvation mode' theory and thought it made sense - also thought it was 'bad' to lose weight quickly. Why do you feel so strongly yhat these things are not true? Genuine question - I'd like to know!

For goodness sake Loubilou why so aggressive at other posters? Everyone is just giving OP their two pence worth based on their own experience and knowledge. There's. a lot of varying advice out there about what constitutes a good diet.

7 pounds a week is a heck of a lot Wether you agree or not.

Agoddess - google is your friend and there are people out there with a lot more knowledge and experience than me Wink. WW have a good article on Starvation Theory being a myth - maybe start there? I will try and find you some other links in the meantime

It's diet companies who make their money from people losing weight slowly that pedal out the tosh about losing it too fast. A thousand calories is a good amount to get all your nutrients in. If it's working for you, well done OP.

Um okay then I'll just google it Hmm. I thought since you were so vehement in your opinion you might have some supporting facts to hand. Off to google then.

Give up - I am not being the slightest bit aggressive! I am irritated that people give out shit advice when they clearly have absolutely no idea what they are talking about that's all. It's really not fair to the OP to be given shit advice! Not sure why on earth people even feel the need to comment when they don't know what they are talking about...you wouldn't find that on other subjects would you? For instance I wouldn't comment on a thread about plumbing as I know nothing about it...

On what grounds is losing fat from your body dangerous whatever the rate you lose it?

Erm the increased risk of gallbladder attacks/stones? Thyroid problems? Possible liver failure?

I have always eaten way less than 1000 calories per day and I'm not dead yet. 1200 would see me pile the weight on.

Report
PickAChew · 01/05/2017 14:20

It's not 7lb a week of fat, though. It's 7lb of fat and muscle and such a monotonous diet in such small quantities almost definitely is not providing all the necessary nutrients to sustain health indefinitely.

We know nothing about the op. They might only have been 3 stone overweight in the first place. That's not a size to be losing half a stone a week because it's safer than not.

I will say to the OP, please go and speak to your GP.

I eat 1200 - 1500 per day absolute max (am not on a diet) I have a sedentary office job although I walk a fair bit.
If I ate more I would put on weight quickly these days.
Seeing your food intake though it seems a bit low on fruit and veg so you should think about eating more for general health.
