26in - but overweight?

charimito · 12/04/2017 22:09

I've recently lost 3st and now weight just below 10st. I'm a size 6/8 (gawd it's so hard t find "grownup looking" small clothes), but I'm still heavy?I'm only 5ft3 btw! I'm a tad confused as weight wise I should aim for at least 7lbs but given my measurements I should really just stop..

Try a different set of scales.
Well done on the weight loss, try and keep it stable for a while.

Your BMI is less than 25 though so not sure why you need to lose more? At just under 10 stone I was a size 10-12 at 5ft 3 so at a 6-8 you are very small - are you sure your scales are ok?

I'm 5'11 and just over 10st. I'm a size 12. I think you're scales are wrong or you've got a gigantic head!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 12/04/2017 22:37

Yep scales are wrong I'm afraid. I'm 5ft 7 and a size 12 at 10st. You're probably more like 7 1/2 -8st if you're only a size 6/8.

It depends on how muscular you are. I'm 5'5" and at 8st 13lb, I was a size 6. I've gone back up to 10st 1lb and am now a 10-12. Before I slimmed down, I was a size 14 at the same weight, but I've really toned up now.

OP, aim to maintain the weight you have one, but do some exercise to tone up.

Maybe the conversion is wrong but my BMI is 25.4... (according to the NHS anyways). I do train heavily, so maybe it's all muscle? I do have toned/muscular legs, arms and my abs show a bit

Something is out. I am nearly 5'3", weigh 8.5 stone and I am nowhere near a 6-8 unless I shop in Next. I am a 'snug' 8 or a 10 depending on the shop.

So either your scales are wrong and you are closer to 8 stone. Or you are wearing your clothes very tight!

Or shopping at M&S.

10 just falls off! My jeans (brand new) were a 26 in waist and they fit perfectly! I thought I was a 10 until, well the 10 didn't fit, and then the 8 fits a bit lose. I don't wear my clothes loose but nothing extreme because that's how I ended up gaining weight (I used to wear one size up, because I just didn't like them tight, particularly trousers).

Definitely not 8st, as I started at 13st and that was confirmed by different scales.

Primark, gap, New Look, joules all confirmed size 6, yes maybe snug, but 8 is too loose.

How odd. Sounds like you've just got heavy muscles. What's your actual waist measurement from a tape measure?

Today was actually 26in, the smallest I've ever been :)

@cornishmum - I train and train and train. 5k a day (i aim for 15k on Sundays), plus 30 mins of strength training 5 times a week, and daily 30 mins of cardio during school term

How bizarre! I weigh the same but I'm 5"8 and size 10. You must have some really heavy muscles!

10st 1lb is bmi 25 for someone who is 5ft 3 so your calculation is wrong. My friend who is your size and is well toned weighs 8st 4.

I'm 1.59 and 64.4 kg (which approximates to that in Imperial - after many years living here I'm still only 100% fluent in the metric system) . But yes, I'm less than 2lbs away from a 25 BMI.

I've always been kind of heavy for my overall size, I weighed around 70kg (around 11st) I was a size 12/10- I had absolutely no muscle mass as I was a couch potato-

I weigh less than you at 5'8" bmi of 21. My size could be an 8 in M&S, next but 12 in proper fashion shops. My waist is 34"!! How are you measuring your waist are you doing it correctly around your belly button?

Report
charimito · 13/04/2017 00:30

@mando yes that's correct. I naturally have an hourglass shape, so that be part of it. I never measured my waist at my biggest, but my jeans were 32.

I think you are very lean. Look into getting your body fat % measured at the gym!

These pictures show women getting heavier as they get leaner. I'm sure you're not actually overweight.

Thanks @maygirl ! Yes my body looks like a mix of the ladies in that page - particularly the legs of one of them and the stomach of another one :) - BTW My scale measures body fat and it thinks I have 24% body fat

In that case, BMI isn't a good indication of health for you. This is why it's not really a good idea to use it... athletes are heavy.

As a side issue, why do you do so much training? And doesn't 5k a day count as cardio?
Not knocking it, just curious - I wish I could be half as driven!

@Shotgun training so much was absolutely never part of the plan! Running has become my thing (so the 5k are just kind of me time), the strength training actually improves my running ( so they kind of go together). As for the cardio, well I "train" my best friend and we do a dance video game together Mon-Fri. If it was up to me, I would stop doing it, but I don't know how to approach the subject, ha!

64.4kg is 141.9lbs or 10st 1lb 9 oz.
1.59 cm is 5'3"
Your BMI is 25.1 when using the imperial numbers and 25.5 when using the metric.

However, if you're fitting into size 6 jeans/trousers I really don't think there's an issue!

I'm 5'4" and (as of today) weigh 9st 11lb and 8oz. My BMI is 23.7 and I'm a size 12. I don't do anywhere near the amount of exercise you describe so I think you have your answer!
