Alternatives to snacking

I work at home and I've got into a very bad habit of snacking when I'm working, and then snacking yet more when I have a break. Nothing terrible, mainly nuts and things like bread sticks, but it all adds up and it's become almost like a crutch to help me get through my work.

Can anyone recommend any alternative strategies to get through my work without using food as a distraction/reward?

Can I jump on this thread, I also work from home and find the snacking is terrible. If I'm out the house, DH is home I am fine and can control myself but as soon as I'm home alone working I can't help just having a bit of this, 1 of these etc!

Try replacing snacks with liquids.
Either water (which admittedly is a bit dull; but then it also helps with drinking the recommended 2l a day) or hot drinks like green or herbal tea. It works for me - taking little sips here and there so it's still like something goes into the mouth!
It's very hard to get out of that habit though; for me snacking is very much linked to reading for some reason so I feel like I can't enjoy a book or the paper if I don't have something to nibble on!

SansaClegane oh yes I'm with you on the reading and eating thing. I too love to read and nibble - and I read a lot! Just joined slimming world and need to get this under control or I'm wasting my time and my money so I'll be following this thread with interest

Agnes good to hear it's not just me who struggles with this! That's definitely the hardest for me. I think it's this 'reward' thinking; I'm reading a nice book so there must be nice snacks to go with it. So hard when your brain is wired like that. Cups of tea definitely help me with that though!

Drink tea (preferably green/ fruit tea)
Chewing gum/ mints
Suck a hard boiled sweet when you get the urge to snack

Those Ricola Swiss Mountain sweets are good, only about 4 or 5 calories each.

A friend of mine used to swear by chewing an elastic band - although you'd have to be careful not to swallow it.

Fruit tea and only snack on fruit/veg. That works for me when I'm trying to watch my weight.

Flavoure Sparkling water is getting me through, fills me up and I get my sweet fix, became addicted to rubicon during pregnancy and it's helped me kick the habit

Herbal tea. I have two sweetener tablets in mine. I like the Pukka teas and Taylor's of Harrogate. Ultimately though, it helped me when we moved house and I now have to go down two flights of stairs to the kitchen. Before I worked in the lounge and it was too easy to just graze all day.
