Liposuction Anyone?

Hello!

I'm working on a small project with friends to help raise awareness of what's in our beauty products. For example, the keratin in our conditioners is usually taken from horses' hooves and hair, while dog fat is used in a lot of soaps (especially in USA). When you look into it, it's not very humane.

We're looking to make a small amount of soap out of human fat (to prove a point and raise awareness), so if anyone is planning on having some work done (namely fat removal), it would be fantastic if you could get in touch. We're looking for donations.

Thank you for any help you can provide- even if you aren't getting any work done yourself, but know of anyone who is- it would be of great use!

Thank you,

Ellen

Not seeing the issue here.
Is the treatment of the horses and dogs cruel?
If not, then it's simply a matter of:

  • fair labelling
  • personal ethics on use of animals

Where are you based?
In the UK it would be illegal and hazardous for any clinic or hospital to give you clinical waste.

@Ellisandra- it's a mix of issues. In many cases yes, the treatment is cruel. Plus, we shouldn't be killing animals for the sake of beauty products. Fair labelling is a big deal. Not knowing what's really in the things we use is crazy.
Take a look at this:
www.peta.org/living/other/animal-ingredients-list/

@MSNDW We're all based in London. Do you know if that means we can't receive donations?

That's what they did on Fight Club!
I think it will be difficult for you to source the fat tbh, but I do agree with your stance (but then i'm vegan, so I would!)

"we shouldn't be killing animals for the sake of beauty products" is just your opinion though.
A widely held one, but still a minority one.
I don't make a distinction between animals for non essential beauty products and animals for non essential meat. Plenty of other protein sources.

So some stunt with human fat in a bar of soap wouldn't interest or persuade me.

Fair labelling is of far more interest to me.

Yes @Sweets101! Thats where we got the idea from.

@Ellisandra, that's right- it is our opinion. But imagine if you went into Boots and they offered you a soap to try. Having cleaned your hands with it, how would you feel if you found out it was made from human fat? It's just as disgusting that we use dogs in our soap. So why is no one talking about it?

Even if you wouldn't feel affected by that, I reckon many people would. But I also agree with you in terms of fair labelling- hence why I linked you to Peta's website.

Why is it disgusting to use dog in soap?

Because a dog is a cute little pet and less disposable or usable than other animals?

Why is it worse to make a bar of soap from dog than to eat chicken?

It is wrong is a manufacturer deliberately misleads a consumer about the content of a product, especially is if they know it's a controversial ingredient. Because I do agree that a lot of people are illogically more concerned about dogs than chickens.

But I disagree with your blanket statement that it's disgusting to use dog in soap.

I have not seen any soaps that say "contains dog", I wonder how well they are labelled?
Personally I don't want any animals in anything I use or eat.
