Is pork unhealthy?

Pork, bacon, sausages, ham.

I never see them on any sort of healtht eating plan.
What's so bad about them?

I don't think pork itself is bad depending on the cut but bacon and sausage are notoriously high in fat and salt

And processed meat has been linked to cancer

Loads of things are linked to cancer.

Grilled pork and grilled bacon and low fat sausages are fine for losing weight.

It's not good for the pig...

I think unprocessed pork (so a joint of pork or pork chops) are no worse than lamb or beef.

But bacon, ham and sausages are processed and have been linked to cancer.
They're very tasty though so I'd go for moderation over complete avoidance!

Depends on the cut of meat. Sausages and bacon have quite a lot of fat, sandwich ham less so but all are processed, cured, added salt etc and are on the unhealthy side (although really a bacon sandwich every now and again is not the end of the world!).

Cooking regular pork loin is about the same as chicken breasts.

Processed meat are very bad for you (bacon, sausage, ham) as they are pumped full of nitrates. Pork also is routinely dosed with antibiotics during rearing, far more than any other meat due to mass production methods. So keep processed meat consumption low and unprocessed pork to a reasonable balance.

I don't take my own advice though!!

Interesting stuff, thanks.
I don't eat pork but I do occasionally eat bacon. Ham I buy for kids lunchbox they have it once a fortnight, I don't eat it myself.
It's sausages that we eat a lot of! I generally buy the premium ones from supermarket, or some from local butchwr who rears his own pigs... would they be the better choice? Sometimes I also get richmond as that's what the kids prefer. But after reading this I'd rather just not buy any at all.

Supermarket ones will still have nitrates, not sure about butcher, you could ask. But his own pigs is s great thing because you might sidestep some of the heavy antibiotic use.

I've read a lot about processed meats & red meat being really unhealthy and linked to certain cancers. Not sure if organic pork might have some advantages though?

Pork and pork products are very high in acid so create acidosis, arthritis , gout, and worse.

There is research saying it's bad. After all two huge world religions ban it . Google it .

Even organic I'm afraid michelle. DH got really bad crippling leg pains after eating organic sucking pig . I thought he could try giving up all of it and he's fine now (unless he forgets). Grin

Pork is not unhealthy in the least.
Lean pork meet is lower in fat than beef but has more visible fat (a layer of it you can cut off, rather than beef which has more fat throughout it).

Processed meat of any kind is not good for you.
Burnt processed meat is really bad for you due to nitrites.

And I am not sure that I accept dietary advice from ancient world religions Grin

There were good historical reasons to ban the eating of pork in the past (mainly parasites) and it would be unwise to eat raw pork, but otherwise pork is a good source of protein.

If you eat it pacific I hope you don't have any health problems. There are a lot of other better sources of protein. I agree about BURNT food of any type.

I enjoy rude health Grin

Googling 'Is X unhealthy?" gets hundred thousands of hits for pork, beef and chicken, and 1.5 for 'meat'.

And I think that is the crux: meat is not that good for us because we eat too much of it. And the additives of industrial meat rearing are just shocking Hmm.

I don't believe that any food is 'bad', but I do believe in paying for the highest quality, most responsibly sourced meat I can find. I don't actually like pork all the much (the smell of it used to make me gag when pregnant), but I don't avoid it.

If is disagrees with you, yep, it's not good for you.
As a food in general it's just another option of meat.

A high purine diet can cause gout attacks in susceptible individuals, so shell fish can be a huge problem. Or alcohol. Or the starch in bear. Or any number of other things.

Good for you Pacific If you get an unexplained 'sprain" or something like that after you've had pork , just think about it. I've noticed that I get bad effects from foods that I never used to, It's age I think.

I follow my blood type so I know what is good for me and what isn't (it works for me) One of the meats (there aren't many) that everyone should avoid is pork. Along with aspartame and colas!
