TEN STONE OVERWEIGHT THREAD

LEIGH350 · 06/11/2016 15:28

I'm starting this because women who are 10 stone and more overweight have nothing in common with "regular" dieters who just want to lose a few pounds or a couple of stone. They can still carry on living life even if they don't lose weight.

I don't know if there are any super heavy women on Mumsnet. I am prompted to post this mainly because I have found a way to eat that actually works and is sustainable.

Surprisingly, it is plain old calorie counting. Also, ironically, because after reading Zoe Harcombe and Gary Taubes I no longer believe in calorie theory. But hey, if it works, just carry on.

I'll wait and see if there are any other women with 10stone+ to lose.

I have 10 Stone to lose! :(

I am 32 and have a lovely DP.

I want to deal with this but it's 20 years in the making and so right now it feels insurmountable.

I haven't read any calorie counting books but will think about downloading my fitness pal.

Tend to stick to slimming world/filling and healthy weight watchers which is all about preparing your own food but it is so easy to cheat with non lean meat and slipping naughty ingredients in.

Can I join you? I don't have 10 stone to lose but need to lose around 100lbs and have no idea where to begin.

I have been overweight since puberty and have major issues with food and willpower. I just weighed myself for the first time in over a year and nearly cried. Sad

i have 10 stone + to lose.

I've never tried a diet thread on mn before, I'm too ashamed.

I'm thinking of doing 5:2. My dh is a gp and he says its the best thing he's seen for his patients.

I need to cut out all alcohol and snacking. I can't exercise as I have a neurological illness that means I can hardly walk.

I'm soon to be 46 and I don't want to be fat at 50! Also I have 3 teenage dc. dd1 and ds are skinny. dd2 is curvy as i was at her age (13). I really don't want her to end up Fat Like Me.

I do intermittent fasting. I don't eat after eating meal.
That was 6pm last night. Breakfast was at 9 so that was 15 hours without food.
You might enjoy the no s diet, no sugar, snacks or seconds on weekdays.
At weekends I have a treat if I want one.
I have a small g and t most days.

I'm also gluten and dairy free.
It sounds hash but I'm better that way than fannying around having a bit of this and that.
Plus sugar and carbs give you a sugar spike and you end up craving more.
I don't exercise either.
Just lots of healthy meals.
I have an omelette with onion every day for breakfast. Lunch is often a home made soup .
Evening meal is protein and veg with occasional carb.
I don't eat potatoes at home. Buckwheat, quinoa, whole grain rice, sweet potato.
That sort of thing.
The eating like a slim person thread is an excellent read.

about the same here.. i'm a size 26 and really need to shift it! I'm not sure i'd go the whole 10st hog, but i wouldn't mind being the 16-18 i was when i met DH 15yrs ago! By the time i married him 12yrs ago i was a size 22... he's a bit of a feeder tbh. The other 2 sizes have crept on because of anxiety/comfort eating and severe sleep deprivation as a result of being a carer for my disabled child.. it fucks up your metabolism.

Its now got more urgent as i've been diagnosed with a Degenerative Disc Disease, and while my weight isn't a cause, shifting it will help the stress on my remaining discs and i need to stay mobile for DS and his future needs.

I just stopped my pill as i believe thats also a big contributing factor.. and i have decided after xmas i'm going to go cold turkey and cut out all the crisps and chocolate.. i can do it, i did it for a couple of months last year, just before i started getting hip pain.. they originally thought it was an exercise injury, but nope.. referred pain from my spine :(

Im trying to eat less carbs and cook more with whole ingredients.. i've got a Jambalaya in the slow cooker today, beef, chorizo sausage, celery, peppers, onion & chopped Tomatoes with some beef stock an seasoning.. will serve with Rice but i will only have a small portion.

Me too. I've totally fallen off the wagon for a few years now. It's one of those things I know I desperately need to do but lack the motivation. It's affecting my back and ability to walk now so it urgently needs addressing.

Can I join? I had 15 st to lose and have lost 2st10 so far by following weightwatchers. I am most successful when I cut the carbs to a minimum and fill up on veggies and protein.
I will confess I am a big eater and spend most days working out how I can get a satisfying amount of food for the least amount of points Blush

Hello. This wouldn't be the first of these threads I've joined. Blush The difference this time is I'm prepared to try.

I've yoyo dieted for years, sometimes quite successfully, but never kept it off. This time, I'm aiming for the lifestyle changes like always knowing what is for lunch/dinner so I don't end up eating takeout 3x week.

Not really planning on weighing myself - am own worst enemy if I start obsessing, so....

Not quite 10 stone to lose here, more like about 6, but I'd love to cheer you all on. I've now lost a stone and noticing the difference already. I'm doing slimming world, I'm not sticking exactly to plan but I'm making small (hopefully sustainable) changes and the weekly weigh in keeps me focused.
Lots of good vibes coming your way :)

I have 10 stone to loose too - have lost 2.5 already but still another 10 to go easily. Am doing SW.

Can I join, i need to loose about 8st and after trying everything (weight loss surgery included Confused) I'm desperate. I've download a calorie counting app on my phone and I do a lot of walking but only started counting calories last week after a disaster appointment with my weight loss nurse. I'm struggling today, I'm bored of soup and porridge and am finding it hard to cook tasty, low calorie meals for me which are also ok for the rest of the family. We are also on a tight food budget which makes things hard too.

Pinot, try the Slimming Eats website. Lots of budget friendly, calorie counted, family friendly foods there. (It's all Slimming World friendly, but she gives calorie counts/WW points too).

Can I join please? I have 8 and a half stone to lose to get to a healthy BMI, will lose some, then get overwhelmed at work, and end up putting it back on again. I think I maybe need to have other people to admit to how bad things have got.

pinot I just did the shopping for the Slimming Eats meal plan - came in at about £55 for week for evening meals scaled for two (hopefully with leftovers for lunches). I already had a ton of the store cupboard stuff though (herbs, spices, etc).

Found some really good family and budget friendly ideas on there thank you.

Can I ask those that are counting calories are you also monitoring your fat intake? I'm
Not sure if I should be, are calories and fat equal (so if I stick to my calorie target will I also be sticking to a low fat intake?) I realised as I was preparing some halloumi that while I've accounted for it in my calories it's fat content is obviously high and could possibly mean I end up eating more fat than I should.

Report
FatMe · 11/11/2016 18:43

A calorie is a calorie is a calorie, but you get far less food for your calories with fat than you do with veg etc

Also, traditional thinking is that fats are just not very good for you anyway, though the tide seems to have turned on that one.

So yes, if you're eating low cal you will almost certainly be eating low fat, but if you do something like trade your halloumi for a huge mushroom, you'd save some calories.

Dowser · 13/11/2016 12:03

Ah but not all fats are created as equal. Though. You need good fats like coconut oil and olive oil.
Some vitamins are fat soluble and you need your vitamins for good health.
Make sure what you eat contains no hydrogenated fat or trans fat...they are poisonous in the body. My dh bloats up like a barrage balloon if he accidentally eats those. Often found in baked goods , processed foods
Also those spreads/ margarines are just horrible and full of goodness knows what crap.Better a thin spread of butter, something like presidente butter. A little goes a long way and you get some vitamins in it.

How's everyone doing. I'm so pleased, Wednesday is my weigh in day and I've lost 6lbs Shock
This means if I can stick to the number of calories I have been I could easily loose a stone by Xmas. Am so happy right now.

I have exactly 10 stone to lose. But zero willpower. I know I need to, I'm 25 and my knees hurt! Most definately not normal, I'll be dead before I'm 50 if I carry on. I have depression, but I cant keep giving excuses - I'm fat because I eat and don't exercise enough. I have had back problems for years, and I put all my energy into my (active) job and kids and then slob the rest of the time.

I'm close to 20 stone again and I want to get to 16 stone to begin with, then 14, then 12 and hopefully hit 9 or 10 stone but I've been at 13 stone before and I was much happier.

So could I join?

26 with DP and my beautiful DD

Any of you have a Fitbit? We could help each other out with that too

Hi Guys :)

I stated in the 10 stone to lose club, I was 19st 1lb at 5ft 5 Blush

I currently weigh 18st 4lbs and I want to hit around the 11st mark by my wedding in April 2018, then hit my ideal weight of around 9 stone some time after that. I'm doing weight watchers online and it's going ok so far although I struggle with motivation as I think anyone in our position does!

My relationship with food is gradually improving. I've learned that food isnt good or bad and that "the wagon" I keep falling off doesnt really exist Grin

The truth is there is no wagon, there is no good and bad food there's just FOOD and healthy choices vs unhealthy ones. It's ok to make an unhealthy choice as long as you track it and compensate for it throughout the rest of the day/ week.

I've found that saving some points for a treat in the evening stops me giving in and grabbing junk food on my way home. For example, I LOVE cheese and crackers so instead of having a chai tea latte (8 points) and a small kinder chocolate bar (5 points) during the day, I'll think to myself "I'd rather save those points and have 5 crackers and 50g good quality cheese when I get home" which adds up to 13 points as well. Before weight watchers, I wouldn't have thought twice about having both of those options and wouldn't even see the coffee and chocolate as part of my food allowance for the day Confused.. the cheese and crackers would be a whole pack of crackers and a whole tub of "low fat" cheese, which i would kid myself is fine because it's the low fat option Hmm (it wasn't nearly as nice as the full fat good stuff either!

Our evening meals are very similar to how they always were, just with more veggies and protein and less starch. For example, pre-weight watchers a stir fry would be 2 noodle nests each, minimal veggies and a whole pack of prawns. Now it's 1 noodle nest, a butt ton of veggies and still a whole pack of prawns. It's much tastier and more filling.. and half the points Blush

I'm losing weight steadily and not feeling as if I'm on a diet, so something must be working :)
