(Very trivial) query about calories in wholewheat pasta....

Not sure if this is the right place for this, let me know if not.. Every now and then I'll have some wholewheat pasta. I calorie count and the pasta I was currently using was 147 calories per 100g. Coming to the end of my current supply, I bought some more, and was under the impression that pasta is pasta, calorie content would be pretty similar so didn't bother checking the new pack Hmm I was very surprised to find that this pasta was well over double the calories (335 per 100g).

Now, I've discarded the bag for my old pasta so unsure of the brand, but THINK it may have been the Asda brand (looked online and there's once called Good and Balanced that states 147 cals per 100g). My query is: is it really possible that there can be such a discrepancy in wholewheat pasta?? It seems a huge difference.

I realise this is oh, so trivial in the grand scheme of things, but I've been whacking 100g on my plate quite happily, secure in the knowledge that it was ONLY 147 calories!! But WAS it???

Thanks in advance Grin

Are you sure one isn't a cooked weight and one uncooked? I think the higher weight is about right for uncooked and wouldn't imagine it'd vary much

Think I had a similar thread. 147 sounds like 100 cooked and the 300 odd 100g dried

I'm confused now. Just looked up the Asda one online and yes, I'm pretty sure it's the same brand. So, it states that it's 147 calories for 100g when cooked on the hob. But which do I go by? I mean, I've been measureng out 100g when uncooked then whacking it on to boil. Isn't it going to weigh MORE when cooked? And how can I know how much it will weight when cooked?? Got a headache now....

I mean, with the water soaking into it and all....

Yes 100g raw pasta would turn into about 300g when it's cooked. Obviously they have the samecalories

So....(sorry to keep asking what must seem like stupid quetions) - If I measure out 100g of pasta, cook it and eat it, I'm actually consuming 300g (approx) so therefor three times the calories stated on the pack?

Only if it refers to cooked weight.

And they're not stupid. I definitely remember starting a similar thread, can't remember the details

Rule of thumb is that 100g dry weight pasta is 200g cooked weight (I think it's actually slightly more, about 210g, but doubling is easier to remember).

If you eat a lot of pasta then you might find this article interesting. Basically it says that if you cook pasta, cool it and then reheat it some of the carbohydrate is turned into a more complex carb that can't be digested and functions as fibre. So cold, left-over pasta is lower calorie and lower gi than freshly cooked pasta, and reheating pasta reduces the calories and gi even more.

You need to take it all back to dry (or over to cooked) weights to compare.

So your 147cal is 100g cooked, or 50g dry. So 100g dry would be just under 300cal cooked.

Second pasta is rather over 300cal cooked, but it seems to be in the right area IYSWIM

Bloody hell, just thinking about the number of calories I've been eating the last few weeks every time I had bolognaise!

Just looking at my fitness pal. It looks like 100g of cooked and drained pasta is about 150 cals. 100g of dried pasta is about 350 roughly.

I normally have about 50g of dried pasta then massive salad with it.

My wholewheat pasta is 327 cals for 100g uncooked. I usually have about 50-60g uncooked weight.
