Successful weight loss after 40

Struggling to lose weight here after I turned 40. I used to be slim and be able to eat and drink anything. At 5'3" I'm small so I can't carry much weight. I used to be around 8st 12lbs and if I went up a few pounds I could lose it in a couple of weeks. I'm 43 now and I'm 10st 11lbs and my god it shows, and it's getting harder and harder to shift it. At the moment I'm doing MFP at 1,200 cals per day and exercise (walking, HIIT and weights) and I hope I can sustain it. I've tried juicing, etc and I don't agree with the Slimming World ethos even though I know it works for many, many people. I'm rubbish at totally eliminating foods and I do like to drink alcohol. I'm hoping that by having significantly reduced amounts of all the foods I eat, plus increasing my energy output with exercise it should work. I rarely eat any dairy (hate yoghurts and cheese and prefer almond milk in tea etc) and don't ever buy low fat stuff because of the sugar / salt content. I cook most meals from scratch.

So, if you are in your mid 40s how have you controlled your weight? If you have lost a lot how did you do it?

I've lost 3+ st in the last year, aged 49.

I have never dieted in my life, I am rubbish at calorie counting/excluding foods/points/going to slimming clubs.

For me it was very very vague low carbing (reducing my intake in empty carbohydrates) and intermittent fasting (16:8).
I cannot see myself changing how I eat as it is so satisfying, delicious and entirely sustainable.

I exercise for fitness and strength but not for weight loss.

Like you I'm small (5ft2) and was always slim - 7.5 stone before I had children Sad

That's no loner realistic or even desirable but at 9st10 I just feel heavy and bloated. Bursting at the seams of size 12 clothes.
I honestly think 9st would be absolutely fine but I lose half a stone and out it back on and it gets harder and harder each time.
I don't have a sweet tooth but I do love wine. I also suffered a bereavement by suicide earlier this year which has been very hard.

I decided to try low carb for 2 weeks before holiday, it's early days but I think I'm a convert. Don't know if it will help me lose weight but I "feel" slimmer and far less bloated and hungry. I am (was) a total pasta addict so never wanted to low carb but have always known wheat doesn't do me many favours - I often have a bad tummy and get really low blood sugar.

Give it a go, I'm still drinking wine Grin
