Haven't lost any weight in 6 days, despite...

... Cutting down drastically on carbs.

My weight has crept up to 9st 11 over the past year, and I'd like to lose half a stone. I'm 5"6.

This week I've been really strict and feel quite a bit slimmer round my middle but the scales haven't budged! Could it be that I've allowed myself to feel hungry to often and I'm in some kind of weird starvation mode?

Also I'm on my period at the moment, but thought that any weight gain ( fluid) goes once you come on.

Help me solve this mystery, please!

The previous week was a glutton's paradise filled with cake and treats. HOW can I have lisr no Weight in nearly a week?! :-(

Ps I know I'm not heavy but I'm 44 and don't want weight to creep up as i get older!

There's a concept 'the whoosh'

Even when you are really consuming at the level you believe, the human body is a bit more complex than an internal combustion engine, and the consumption of fuel (food/fat stores) isn't as predictable as how a machine does it. And sometimes there are periods of apparent non-shifting, then a few days when you seem to drop a lot effortlessly.

You just need to hang on in there!

Stella, wow, I never knew that! Just had a Google and it makes sense, but is it usual to experience this in week one of a diet??

How often do you weigh yourself? There will always be fluctuations due to variable water retention, so if you only weigh once a week it may look like you haven't lost anything even though you have. I find daily weighing helps to show a trend much better.

So last Wednesday I weight myself and I was 74.1 kilos. Sunday night I weighed myself and I was 76.8 kilos (no change to food or diet, only difference is that I'm a couple of days before my period). Yesterday, I was 75.5, today I'm 74.8. Once my period is done and over with I wouldn't be surprised if the scales dip below 74.1.

Sometimes I'll hover at exactly the same weight for about a month. Other times it's seems I'm losing weight everyday.

I'm actually quite happy with my size now, so now I just like to weigh myself out of curiosity. It's really fascinating to see the dips and spikes.

A pause is nothing to worry about at all, especially if you're feeling slimmer around the middle.

Hi widow, I weigh myself daily. I went down to 9st 10 but then back up!

Just read about the whoosh effect a bit more. I HAVE experienced it in the past after a 'this diet isn't working. Sod it' binge. In other words, no weight loss then I eat a massive pizza a lose weight the next day??!

But let me ask again, can the whoosh effect happen in week one?!

You're on your period. That's the reason. Wait till a couple of days after it's done and weigh yourself then.

Ok fatty. I had read that weight gain is dropped the minute period starts but maybe that's not true for everyone!

Even painkillers cause me water retention. I'm the same height as you & weigh around the same (older but not significantly). I'm hoping that no chocolate, lots of walking & interval skipping & weights will help.

Why would water retention necessarily stop the minute your period starts? That's not logical. Your hormones are in fluctuation particularly just before and at the start of your period. Also, 6 days isn't long to be dieting, what are you expecting? You may only see 1lb loss anyway, and that's fine

I think the 'whoosh' is just a description of the non-linear progression of weight loss. I can't think of any reason why it couldn't happen at any time.

Weight gain maybe, once my period starts the scales don't tend to go higher, but they don't go down either, they tend to stay firmly in the same spot. I find the "best" week for noticing weight loss is 2 weeks after my period finishes.

Also, your weight is healthy. While you may not be happy with the weight gain, you're body may feel differently. It may fight you tooth and nail to stay at that weight.
