Intermittent fasting...

Was at a health workshop a couple of weeks ago and this topic came up and I pricked my ears up as I can't do daily fasting.

To be fair I'm doing this for health reasons as I suffer a lot with digestion troubles but if I lose a bit along the way then all is good. I'm still carrying a bit of winter weight.

So basically it works like this . You have two meals a day and the fast starts from the last one through the night to the next meal. It's all about giving your digestion / body a rest .to make it more efficient , maybe give the body more time to repair.

Now if you have a hectic social life you might struggle but we don't.

So what I do is have my last meal before 8pm and then eat again anywhere between 9-11 am. So last night for example I had my meal at 5-30 and I've just had breakfast at 11 am. So that's 17 and ahalfhours. 13-18 is good. You need to try to allow three hours for digestion before bed time.

Where it helps me is it cuts out late night snacking. So itmight help someone else. Once I've had my evening meal I know I'm done till breakfast.

I don't just have two meals I have a light soup lunch around 1 pm . I also eat very healthily. No gluten, dairy that kind of thing.

I have an occasional snack of almonds or walnuts between my 'eating hours' or maybe an apple.

Breakfast is always a protein meal of 2 organic egg omelette fried in coconut oil or if travelling I'll take some hard boiled eggs. Home made soup for lunch, protein veg and a good quality carb like whole grain rice or sweet potato for evening meal.

I've been really poorly. So this is a getting better healthy choice. I've had too much sugar and that causes me huge problems.

I do this. I've lost 35 pounds and maintained it since last summer.

I don't think it'd work for everyone but I love this way of eating Smile.

I have been doing 16:8 for 6 weeks and found it surprisingly easy. I have lost 15 lbs so far, still have 20 to go.

Hang on - are you saying you just have an early supper and late brekkie and you are laughing?

And not eat like a pig in the actual day?

Or is it a little more complex than that?

Poo yes basically that's it. I'm no expert but I have just been eating healthily within my 8 hour window everyday. I honestly can't recommend it enough. It has totally curbed my sugar addiction. I feel like a new woman.

I've lost 17lbs since the end of Jan. And I'm less than 5ft tall so have low calorie requirements. I'm now well within healthy bmi and am just going to keep going with it until my weigh stabilises. I feel healthy and it's not any effort... I can easily imagine eating like this indefinitely. I've also completely broken my snack habit.

I only have two meals though. Lunch and dinner.

Oh wow. I'm feeding half the night currently so possibly not able to do it yet. Do you think it works with a leeeetle snack at say 4am..?

I sort of half heartedly tried this last year but didn't stick to it. I'm going to try to combine this with a bit of 'no S' to see if I can lose some weight and break the terrible snacking/sugar habit that I'm in. I tend to eat with Ds at around 5.30pm and am going to try to stick to three meals a day, no seconds, snacks or sweets and not eat in between 5.30pm and breakfast the next day.

Oh wow 'my hat' ...that's a phenomenal amount. I didn't realise it's so popular and you too fuzzy wizard. I wish id known about it last year when I was dieting for my wedding.

No, I don't eat like a pig when it's eating hours as I can't. I eat very healthily. If I tried to eat whatever I wanted my innards would revolt .

If I was at a social evening event I'd just skip breakfast and have a late lunch the next day.

I've never been a big snacker in the evening, it just makes me mindful to be careful with what I eat through the day.

Yesterday I had my usual omelette. Green soup at lunch and tried my DH s toasted gram flour flatbread/ pancake style thingy which was lovely. I had a few walnuts later and a pear and then didn't eat till late , 8-30 pm last night. Pork stir fry with whol grain rice.

Just a small portion.

Just had breakfast at 11-30. I think this is how my friend at SW has done it. She'd go all day and eat a bowl of soup then a small meal a nd lost a stone. ( she didn't do this every day, but her eating is haphazard and not particularly healthy and likes a good drink once or twice a week.)

Each to their own. We are all different.

Not sure about the 4am snack. If its in between the 13-18 fast then technically yes you're breaking it but heck as you're feeding another person then go for it. That's more important.

My hat, I'm still in awe of your 35 pounds weight loss.

Would you mind giving me a run down of what a days food looked like. When you ate it and when you stopped eating please.

No problem Grin.

I just have tea and water in the mornings. I do have milk in tea while fasting but I know some people advise zero calories.

I have lunch at 12ish, it might be soup with beans, lentils and chorizo, so plenty of protein plus veg. Or a big salad with loads of protein. I usually have full fat Greek yogurt with berries and oats/seeds too.

Then I have water and tea until dinner, which is 7:30. I tend to have whatever DH is cooking but just with extra veg rather than rice/pasta. So could be pork loin, fish cake, steak, haddock something like that.

If I need to, I might have oatcakes with peanut butter about 4pm. But often I find once I start to snack I feel hungrier and more snacky.

I was using MFP to track calories to ensure a deficit. I was coming in about 1400 (I'm only 5 ft 4). I generally ate 2 large meals with full fat ingredients like butter, yogurt etc.

Sometimes on the weekend I'll have breakfast if I fancy it but eating this way suits me.

The 1400 calories was just while I was losing weight. I eat more than that now I'm maintaining. (Cake)

So you're fasting from around 8-oopm till 12 lunch.

Roughly 16 hours and pretty much no eating between meals

That's very good ( spartan lol)

I've done 14 hours and I'm starving. I need to have breakfast so I can have my supplements.
I also had 2 pieces of chocolate mid morning and two right after dinner last night.
Not really losing weight but digestion feels more comfortable.
