walking my way to weightloss

Is it possible?

Just that really.

I am clocking up on average 12k steps per day. Will I lose weight if I keep the diet the same?

Has anyone lost weight this way?

I tried that but it didn't work for me. I had to cut my calories and take up more strenuous exercise.

I suppose it depends how much you're eating. I was eating way over what I needed per day so I cut back to 1200 calories, started walking, exercising, etc. I've lost 19 pounds since January.

Weightloss is about 80% related to diet and 20% related to exercise.
To lose 1lb you need a calorie deficit of 3,500.
So to lose a pound per week, you would need to do extra exercise worth 3,500 calories.
Walking burns about 180 calories per hour, so you would need to walk for an extra 19 hours a week in addition to your normal activities which generate about 10,000 steps per day
(can you tell I've given this a lot of thought?!)
I've been on 1,400 calories per day since January, and have been trying to walk for an hour a day. Have lost 2 stone.

I haven't been doing this on my own - I've joined "fat club" as me and my sister call it!

Thank you. What is fat club? How much are you losing on average per week?

In theory... IF your weight is currently stable AND you keep your calorie intake the same AND you increase your calorie expenditure, then you will create a calorie deficit, which should mean you start to lose weight.

However, in reality, chances are your weight is not completely stable, AND if you don't rigidly monitor what you eat, you'll probably increase it in response to increased activity, AND if you do lose weight, your metabolic rate will decrease, so you will actually need to decrease your calorie intake anyway.

On the plus side, walking is a great complement to a weightloss programme. I've lost 6.5 stone in the last year, never eating less than 1400kcal per day, and walking has been pretty much my only form of exercise.

I think walking can help but it really depends on the kind of walking. A ramble or a dog walk with frequent pauses while he sniffs every tree isn't going to cut it.
I'm, shall we be kind and say, 'financially challenged' at the moment so can't afford a gym membership (but can afford 1 swim session and 1 Aqua class per week). The rest of my diet plan consists of food planning and whatever I can do for free. I've also worked out my TDEE thingummy.
Free apps like map my run have been invaluable in telling me how many calories my walks and cycles have used up, and how far I've gone.
Using OS maps app has shown me all the public footpaths round here so I'm on a mission to cover them all now.
I have downloaded C25K though so far I've only looked at the first level and tried to use that in my walks (eg 1 min jogging, 1.5 mins walking).
I go out on my walking alone as then I walk faster.
Trying hard to do something every day. Walk, cycle (on the old rustbucket), swim, walk, aqua, cycle.
I want to lose 2 stone and have managed a pound a week so far, but lost about 3 inches round my middle.

Total do you reckon the calorie information on the MapMy apps is about right?

I use them too but am always suspicious that they don't ask for any information, like height and weight, so always take the results with a pinch of salt!

But you do put in your height and weight- it doesn't register the calories unless you do?
On mapmyrun, go to profile, then press edit on the top right. It comes up with gender, birthdate, height and weight.

Oh yes Blush

Must've entered them when I first set it up and forgotten!

I thought it was being a bit presumptuous! Grin

I walked off a lot of baby weight then plateaued. Try wearing a (heavy) rucksack or wrist and ankle weights.

MrAli - 6.5 stone, that's brilliant !

Hara - it's called Bodyslims but is only in Dublin. An hr of a talk every week after weigh in (he's a motivational speaker & the approach is all CBT based), a formal walk each Sunday, you keep a food diary & hand it in each week, you do your own walk each day as fast as you can go. Am losing about 2.5 lbs a week. Did 1 ten week course and have just started a second.

Total,

You seem to be doing a version of HIT (high intensity training) where you raise your hear it then go slow...

I started walking about 2 weeks ago, 1 HR every day at a moderate pace (4.5 km in 1 HR). I haven't changed the diet yet. But see no difference in weight. I am aiming to lose 5kg before summer.

I find it very difficult to
Lose weight. Unless I absolutely starve myself, it doesn't happen.
