Starting the no 'S' eating regime today to lose weight, anyone want to join in?

Hi, have got decidedly porky over the past few years.
I feel tired and lethargic, and none of my clothes look good anymore.
I also need to lose weight for health reasons and increase my (currently woeful) level of exercise.

I want to follow a simple and 'do-able' eating plan that is fairly simple and that I will be able to sustain ie hoping to lose 0.5 kg each week.

I'm planning to follow the no 'S' "diet":

book here

A summary of the basic rules is:

no snacks
no sweets (it's an American book so that covers puddings as well as biscuits and confectionary)
no seconds

except on days that start with 's' ie the weekend, and 'special' days ie birthdays and big holidays such as Christmas.

I've got the book so can answer further questions but that is basically it!

I'm going to be using MFP to log calories and I have also found the free NHS weight loss plan (includes exercise) helpful too

see here

I am planning to post my weight here Blush every Sunday too (but that is not obligatory of course).

The other reason for posting on here is that I don't want to bore my family and friends to death about it in rl!! But it would be nice to have some companions along the way Smile.

Anyone want to join in?

Btw, I know calorie counting is not part of the no 'S' diet; I'm justing adding that in for myself because I find MFP's breakdown of foods in to fats, sugars, proteins etc really helpful and it also highlights the areas where I am going wrong.

Hi! I'd like to join you if that's ok. Have become increasingly aware over the last few months that my eating habits and excercise regime are pretty poor. I need to lose three stone ideally but am going to aim for two pounds a week between now and Christmas and see how we go. Your plan sounds good my two main problems seem to be snacking and portion size. I have a busy job so might often skip lunch but the. Get famished and end up swigging lucky are and eating chocolate for a sugar hit on the way home. Can also easily eat as much as DH who is much taller and does a lot of excercise and I love carbs. Never been a breakfast person either.

I realise that this has got to stop so have planned some quick and easy breakfasts for this week that I can take with me to work: bananas, blueberries and natural yoghurt. I've also made a big pan of spicy chicken and spinach soup for work lunches and will find 10 mins to heat and eat it. Have also planned suppers for Monday and Tuesday and have all ingredients ready in the fridge to save any last minute panics and caving in to the kids' demands for pizza etc. Wednesday night is busy in our house so might get the slow cooker out later and use that on Wednesday so everyone can eat as and when.

Let's do it!

Oh and also happy to post weight! Tbh I need the accountability..! Will get batteries for the scale tomorrow and report back. Scarily I don't know how much I actually weigh at present. I guess around 12 or 12.5 stone...??

I'd like to join please! Sweet foods are my downfall so this seems like a good plan.

Oh that's terrific guineapig1! Really happy you posted! I definitely need the accountability too!!

Lots of similarities here!! Smile

My portion sizes are also out of control, as is the snacking!

I am currently declaring 13 and a quarter stone which is roughly 84 kilos Blush

I need to get down to a few kilos below 70 kg, so we have similar amounts to lose too!!

Sounds as though you are really organised and ready for this! And after a summer of indulgence, I am really, really ready now too!

Am also having soups and salads for lunch.

Am also meal planning!!

Serendipity or what? Grin

Me too. Have been doing this, half-heartedly (ie, starting the weekend in a Thursday) for some time but need the motivational back up.

Am 13 stone 4 and need to lose about 1.5 stone (am tall and old so 11 stone anything will do me).

I'm in - but I'll push the s one step further and go no sugar!

I need to lose 2 stone - by Christmas would be amazing.

I tried to start this last month but due to a stressful time in the school summer holidays I fell off the wagon. Time to start again. I have the most disturbing spare tyre now at 41 and am very similar weight to you standclear. I'll not be calorie counting or weighing though as getting obsessed is my downfall. Trying to make positive changes I can sustain.
Good luck all. Eat a decent breakfast and late lunch are my best tips!

A warm welcome to:

dorothymichaels (I usually lose weight in the summer but didn't this year due to having a less than magical time, so am with you there!)

chell792 congratulations on your engagement!

waxybean I'm hopeless at calculating 'what is a reasonable weight to lose by when' but would love to lose 2 stone by Christmas too!

Think there are nearly 100 or so days until Christmas - is that do-able at 0.5 kg a wek - will try and work it out

Hello, there is an older No S Diet thread here if anyone's interested in joining in...

Report
guineapig1 · 13/09/2015 20:46

I agree. See I'd like to think that 2st by Christmas is achievable if we start now. It works out at just under 2lb per week if we start now! I'm not sure that no sugar is sustainable for me personally, have seen some no sugar diets and they seem pretty hardcore. Good on you if you can though. Certainly I need to reduce my sugar intake but hoping that will come naturally with the no snacking.

I'll join you.
I want to lose 2 stones but pribsbky should be 3 ideally.
I've been trying since I had dc 5 who is now 4 Blush
I have sore hips and no energy, might give slimming world a go from memory and all the old books I've acumulated over the years.
I also need to reduce portion size and not eat the same as dh!!

Oooops!
Just realised it's thr S diet.
Ok, happy to give that a go!

Good morning! First 'proper' day of the diet today! (I am slightly worried about no snacks until lunch time as I normally stop for a wee bit of bread and cheese or a banana or something around 11am, but will have sustaining brkfst now!)

Good luck everyone!

guineapig1 (sorry working with kilos as live abroad) think 1 stone = 2.2 kilos (will check) and I am aiming at half a kilo weight loss per week so think 2lb a week weight loss might be a bit much for me - but I am probably much older and less active than you Smile

Agree about the no-sugar btw. Hope I will be able to make it through five days until the weekend! And if I can't, one bite of something small and sweet (like a date) will hopefully be good alternative in extremis.

A warm welcome to Ledkr (and hats off to anyone who has 5 dc Smile!!) the beauty of the no 'S' "diet" (don't like that term!) is its simplicity. You don't have to follow that particular diet though of course! Sore hips doesn't sound good - should you get a blood test - maybe some minerals/supplements??

A warm welcome to AnotherEmma!

Sorry - didn't see he other thread - does everyone want to pile in with them (if they don't object) or carry on here?

1kg = 2.2lbs

I'm having a bad start to the day already, I'm at my parents and they're serving pain au chocolat for breakfast. It won't be worth the fuss of turning it down Confused
Will start properly once I'm back home this afternoon!

Magpie, the beauty of the no-S diet is flexibility!
I had an apple for breakfast, with a smear of peanut butter on one slice, followed by a bowl of fruit and fibre with milled linseed. That should see me through the morning, I find having protein at breakfast helps.
At my desk working until a yoga class at 12, then will have lunch after that.
Good luck all!

I didn't know there was a diet like this. I have been doing it for years with the results of being very over weight.

Report
msrisotto · 14/09/2015 08:40

I guess the effect or benefit it can have for you depends on where your diet/eating habits are letting you down. For me, eating sweets between meals is the problem, not the meals or portion sizes themselves, which is probably why this sort of thing works for me (I've been doing no added sugar for a couple of months). But if your main meals are really unhealthy and large portion sizes are your issue then I guess this method isn't going to help you much.

I think weekend binges are also a risk (for me anyway), so that's something to look out for!

Report
standclear · 14/09/2015 13:33

Oliversmumsarmy Grin. I personally think this seems sensible and 'do-able' precisely because it isn't extreme in any way.

Msrisotto yes, personally, I need to stop eating seconds and thirds and snacking between meals. When I add up calorie intake on MFP, it's always the in-between meal consumption that tips me over the limit, not the actual meals themselves

Dorothymichaels agree about protein at breakfast, I find boiled eggs a lifesaver

Maggiecursedte I'm having a bad day too - the office ordered pizzas in for lunch to celebrate the return of a staff member and they made a special delivery to me (I work down the road). It was difficult to refuse.

Maggiecursedtea and guineapig1 apologies, I totally screwed up the weight conversions this morning Blush

Of course one stone = 6.3 kg

And I meant 2.2 pounds = roughly 1 kilo

(that will teach me to post when half asleep) Blush

Hope everyone is doing OK!

Hi! It was me who started the other No S Diet thread. I didn't make a very good start, largely because the summer holidays were maybe not the best of times to try to settle into good habits! I'm still utterly convinced that this is the way forward though.
So I've had a big slice of dh's birthday cake today, but am going to start No S again from now. Thanks for the new thread, standclear.
