I really have to lose weight in 2015!

LapsedTwentysomething · 19/12/2014 21:32

I have steadily gained weight since having my two DCs, and am as heavy as I've ever been, and will no doubt be a bit heavier still after Christmas.

I successfully lost 2.5st before conceiving DD (I have PCOS so it was essential and that spurred me on). I lost the weight after I had her, but then put some back on, had DS and am always just so busy and tired that my diet is horrendous. I work FT and that doesn't help matters.

My DM is really ill with advanced cancer, so I've been putting it all to the back of my mind and eating and boozing too much. This has to stop.

I have tipped over into obesity. My waist is non-existent and I know that's a big health no-no. It has to be addressed as soon as Christmas is out of the way.

Can anybody inspire me? I don't really want to do anything that isn't 'easy' in the sense that cereal is easy in the morning (so low-carbing is probably out) and I can't fast as I teach some really difficult classes and need to feel strong and energised.

I'm thinking of either WW or MFP. I really don't fancy SW as it seems so dull.

Just a quick reply to say don't knock sw - I know someone who loomed in the summer and she has lost nearly 2 stone. I do it up and down and am thinking of starting back again. Sorry about your dm being ill. I have lost my dm and it does affect the eating regarding the emotional side of things. The thing is if you eat better you will actually feel better (hangs head in shame after eating a load of sweets today). Try and enjoy christmas and then get your head in the game .

So sorry to hear about your DM :-(. Apart from that I could have written your post myself. 3 kids and a lot of extra weight later I am actually obese and have an attic full of clothes that won't fit. I'm thinking I'll start with MFP because the app is so brilliant. Both WW and SW cost money and their apps are much less helpful

Me too..I was a size 8 before I had my son 4 years ago .i managed to lose the weight for a while and then my dad died and I comfort ate ( don't remember but I must have done) I am not a size 14..it isn't pretty ..I need to do something before it gets out of hand as I'm just going up and up. I'm debating sw .

Start today.
Do not wait till the new year.
Start the simple way

Drink water before and with every meal (even if there is booze as well)
No snacks ever, at all, at all, at all

Its doable through Christmas
and come the new year easy to then clamp right down on the portions

Does anyone know the principles of sw ?

Report
Anaisa · 21/12/2014 22:23

I've never really stuck with Sw (even though paid for an online membership :-( ) but it's smth along the lines of - there are free foods like veg, fruit, pasta, potatoes, rice, lean meat, fish that you can eat as much as you want, as long as 1/3 (or was it a half?) of your plate is veg. And then there are syns which include the naughty foods and things like dressings, bread, cheese etc.

I think I've symplyfird it as there are also healthy extras that you can eat in limited quantities, but I can't remember the details as it was a while ago.

TalkingPeace thank you for this advice. It's actually a great one. I am not sure I have the willpower to not snack and refuse the nibbles that seem to be on offer wherever I go, but my aim is to control myself and not overeat as I normally do during christmas.

You should join the low carb bootcamp thread. Next one starts on the 19th January.
Loads of support, brilliant recipe ideas. I've lost almost 7 stone this year!

I have PCOS and lost weight this year using mfp

It's the only thing that has ever really worked, SW doesn't seem to work for me

I want to lose some more in 2015 and then I'm hoping to reach my target and maintain it

talkin s advice is fab (not sure I can do it this side of Christmas) and I will deffo be doing this moving forward

I do too, I need to lose 2 stone I reckon. Sad

I started doing mfp last year, but also hurt my foot so stopped exercising and lost motivation.

I've borrowed the Paul MCKenna book about stopping emotional eating as I know that's my biggest issue.

I had my ds 6 weeks ago and with the weight I've kept on with my last baby and the extra stone I have after this pregnancy I've got 2 stone to loose.

My diet up till I gave birth was appalling! Since then I've cut out bread, pasta, potatoes and takeaways. I've massively reduced my sugar intake but it's my major downfall.

It seems to be working but I really need to cut out the sugar! I'm loosing 2lb ish a week and don't get hungry.

I'm also doing the 30 day shred and couch to 2k so hopefully I'll see changes.

lapsed I have porridge oats with coconut milk and a banana and raspberry a on top. If you keep your portion size in check it's low calorie/fat etc but keeps you going till lunch time. Avoids cereals with all the extra added sugar.

Sorry for posting and running. Last time I looked there were no responses, then I forgot about the thread.

TalkinPeace, I have seen your posts a lot on these boards and you always speak common sense which is something I seem to be sadly lacking when it comes to diet and health. I'm thinking along the lines of simply eating things I think my body will thank me for and avoiding others.

bishbosch, I can send you some SW info if you PM me. Sorry to hear about your dad. Losing a parent something you just think of as one of those sad things until it actually looks like it will happen to you and you understand how desperately awful it is. However I know my DM would be more comfortable with me being a healthy weight as she always has been, so I must stop the comfort eating.

readyforno2, 7st in a year is simply amazing. What do you do for breakfasts and lunches that don't involve cereal or bread?

I also like the coconut milk idea - I imagine it's quite sweet. We have almond milk in the fridge too, so could give that a go.

The magic trick is to eat Mindfully
not to eat mindlessly

Mindless eating = sitting on the sofa watching TV with a family bag of crisps next to you and the hand dipping from bag to mouth while the eyes never leave the screen

Result of mindless eating = looking at the empty bag and feeling crap

Mindful eating = serving a nice big meal onto a plate, enjoying it, looking at every bite and savouring the flavours and textures.

Result of mindful eating = closing the kitchen after the meal, drinking water for the rest of the evening and sleeping well

WHAT you eat can be controlled easily once you control HOW you eat.

I have a wedding in June. I would like to lose 3 stone between now and then so I'm in. Fitnes DVDs - waste of time or not? I have Davina and Jillian somewhere gathering dust, I was thinking a dance fitness dvd maybe? What's the consensus on diets?

Report
LapsedTwentysomething · 26/12/2014 22:34

The co census is that there isn't a concensus! Think I will start by trying to eliminate bad habits rather than going all out on a diet I won't stick to. I need to rethink my attitude to food in general.

Anything that calls itself a diet is doomed to failure : because it will put you onto an unsustainable eating pattern that will make you lose weight till you get to "target" and come "off the diet"

If you never "go on a diet"
but just change your diet you cannot fail

it comes down to eating like the person who weighs what you want to weigh
start today and carry on for ever

and Jillian is GREAT for those who want to exercise at home - I prefer going to the gym as then I cannot bunk out of the middle of a class Smile

Well in the past few months I've tried Atkins - lost weight on it before my wedding. Gave up after 2 weeks as I had actually gained weight. I tried a weirdy internet diet which lasted a day as I was ready to chew my hand off I was that hungry, and going to the gym - I live half an hour away from the nearest one which meant my whole evening was gone 3 times a week. I'm humming and hahing between trying SW as it reckons I cam eat plenty and going to a personal trainer.

Please can I join in?

I have two main current reasons for wanting to change to a healthier lifestyle:

  • I am TTC, and so I want to be in the best shape possible to be able to conceive, carry, deliver and be a parent!
  • Confidence. I have put on so much weight in the last two years, since moving in with DH and eating bigger portions. DH is also a vegetarian so my actual diet has changed too.

I would love to lead a healthier lifestyle but I don't. I will hold my hands up and accept the reason I don't lead a healthy lifestyle is purely convenience (which is actually inconvenience in the long term!)

I am 5 foot 9, between a size 12-14 on my hips. I used to run and do pole dance fitness. I think I would like to do the 30 Day Shred, with a view of moving onto another DVD after.

My nutrition is definitely the main issue though!

Hello,

I need want to lose around 50lbs as well. I started just before Christmas and I ate only salads over the Christmas days, apart from one piece of cake yesterday. I have PCOS as well, combined with insulin resistance, so I have to eat low-carb, low sugar and I followed a high protein diet this year from January to the beginning of April and lost 24lbs very easily. However, my depression became worse and it was easier for me to indulge in biscuits, pasta and pizza. I gained 36lbs and now I feel unattractive, have no self-esteem and I would love to get that mind back I had at the beginning of this year. I moved to Istanbul exactly seven days ago and here I live in a fully staffed home. I have much more time to myself and I can go to the gym and hire a personal trainer, I also have somebody who cooks healthy meals for me. Unless I eat rubbish when I go out it should be fairly easy to lose the weight (I hope!). I started going back to low carb last Saturday, not 100% strict but I lost 6lbs so far and I hope in 2015 more lbs will follow.

I join the gym on the 1st of January and luckily have found a Personal Trainer who can speak German, my native language. It is so hard to find somebody who speaks English here. Looking forward to this journey.

I'm going to follow this thread too. I'm going to try to lose 2stone by September when my skinny sister returns to visit from abroad. I will do MFP, personal training and my fitbit. I think I might try to blog my progress daily as a motivator.

Me too. I think I'm going to try 5:2. SW did not work for me. I only lost 4 pounds in 10 weeks and stuck to it rigidly. I need something faster than that.

I'm going to keep an eye here too. I have just overdosed for the past 3 days , not so much on sweets but on big meals. Am off now for a few days and will try and go cycling or walking with dd and try and eat healthily as I reckon I have put on 3 lbs over Xmas so far. I had been doing well and had lost 10 lb before Xmas. Would like to go back to my sw class at least no heavier than I was before Xmas.

My experience with MFP is that I go great guns for about 2 weeks. Then I get weary of logging. Then I have a blow out that I don't want to record. Then I stop using it! Grin
