Oh, that's why I look fat...

Apparently I am fat! 13 stone, who'd've thunk it? Spurred on by the dreaded holiday photos I'm biting the bullet, would anyone like to join me? My BMI is 28.5. I'm hoping to lose 3 stone but 11st 6 would squeak me into a healthy BMI.

I've got My Fitness Pal and a Fitbit. I'm also embarking upon Couch to 5k. I've gained weight steadily in my 30s, I'm now 37 and clearly push has come to shove! I'm not averse to any faddy quick-fixes if anyone has any to share (!) but I'm currently basing my efforts on a review of the Hairy Dieters program on YouTube! Their lasagne is absolutely delicious by the way and there is no way you'd guess it was 350 calories a portion.

Hello Warbling, nice to meet you :-). I'll look you up on MFP. I'm in a bit of a grump as I seem to have put on 2lb over the weekend. I think that'll be the red wine!

Hi all, please can I join? I've lost 10lb by myself low carbing but need to lose another 10lb. Currently on an 8 week countdown to a friend's wedding when I need to look good in a party frock Hmm

I use my Fitbit all the time, think it's ace! If only I was as motivated about going to the gym...

Report
anothercrackatit · 15/09/2014 14:07

Hi Ruby, 10lb is great, well done, how long did that take? I know what you mean about the wedding, my cousin is marrying in December and of really like to get into a dress I've got in the wardrobe and never worn.

I do like my FitBit but I think My Fitness Pal is actually more useful for me. The FitBit food database is annoyingly entirely American where as I love MFP's scanning and huge British database. The Fitbit doesn't recognise cycling or the rowing machine but did buzz to tell me I'd hit 10,000 steps whilst I was shaving my legs! I've got the two apps and they sync very happily together.

I'm feeling entirely uninspired which is bad news as I'm only a week in! I'm going to go and but the Hairy Dieters' books for inspiration. My husband has twice cooked their tortilla pizzas which are lovely and under 400 calories (entirely up to your toppings of course) and their lasagne was great so I have high hopes! Might also buy vodka

I'm just leaping in to say I could have written the op. Aside from being 37. I'd love to be 37 again Grin. Definitely want to join in - I'm bored of feeling lumpy.

I've got to dust off my fitbit again, and charge it up. I started tracking on mfp last night after watching an episode of the Biggest Loser. Caught myself thinking "why didn't they do something about it sooner?" and then realised that it's 'sooner' for me right now, and if I don't do something I might as well call Jillian and Bob.

Highly motivated by your loss, Senatus! I need a goal really, maybe a tiny one to start off with, like lose 4 pounds by the beginning of October. It's two weeks away - difficult, but doable?

Hi another, it took me about 12 weeks to lose the 10lb. Not spectacular but I did have a couple of holidays in that time too!

LizLemon, I really like my Fitbit but for some reason haven't clicked with MFP! Will have to have another go. I have a gym membership and I go to a weekly Glow Fit class (formerly Rosemary Conley) which I use as motivation for weight loss... Although last time I lost 2.5lb (amazing for me) I still wasn't Slimmer of the Week. Pah!

I've been low carbing for a while now and find it ok when I'm at home but very tricky when I'm out and about. Or perhaps I just have no willpower?! Better find it as I have another 10lb to go...

I'm on mfp, same name as here if you want any friends. Will def encourage you on the c25k - that is what changed my life, Jan 2013 I think. I lost 60lbs in just over a year or so. It's still going down very very slowly now. I eat lots, but I am an exercise fiend now. This year I am learning to swim properly.

Hello ladies! I weighed 12st 7.5lbs this morning and am greatly cheered having regained my first week's lbs over the weekend Smile. I started the 3rd week of C25K today, rather stupidly on an incline! I've also just done 5 minutes on the rowing machine to earn an extra glass of wine, goodness only knows how I got so fat Grin

I'll look you up on MFP, I'm Scamperooney on there. I'm running (and walking on rest days) with wrist weights but I don't know how to reflect that on MFP, do you have any ideas? I may be kidding myself but I think my arms may be a bit less flabby.

What's a fitbit?

Report
anothercrackatit · 18/09/2014 23:22

A Fitbit (Flex) is a wristband exercise monitor thingumy, a pedometer that also monitors your sleep, food, exercise etc.. It syncs with MFP which makes it easier to use as the fitbit's food data bank is American and I don't think it scans barcodes although I may be wrong. I tend to use MFP for data input and the fitbit for it's wearable functions. It will add calories to your MFP count based on your measured activity rather than leaving you to estimate but it doesn't compute cycling, rowing etc.

July last year I was 13 stone 5lbs and desperately unhappy, like you OP, I reached a point where something had to give.

I joined miming world and have lost 2 1/2 stone, I reached target just last week. It would have been sooner but I suffered an ectopic in March which sent me completely off the rails. I managed to get back on track though and I'm glad because the results are amazing.

I have tried every diet going, quick fixed don't work for me. I need to eat big, hearty portions and I could do that with slimming world. It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

Good luck with it all x

tbh I'm not convinced weights while running are a great idea. Running will work out your arms to some degree in any case - especially if you incorporate hills into your route, and I would concentrate on getting the running right. By adding weights you are increasing your body's work level when it is already working pretty hard and increasing the risk of injury. Ideally if people DO use weights while running they tend to use a vest, which centres the weight and puts less strain on the limbs.

I can't actually run atm due to a tendon injury (caused by a weirdy muscle imbalance!) I'm really missing it, but I cycle and swim and do gym classes.

Have you measured yourself yet? If you maintain a good exercise program you will soon notice clothes becoming looser. Try to to get hung up over fluctuations of weight. Those 2lbs were probably water. If you eat food high in salt, drink alcohol, or exercise hard your body will retain water.

Hairy bikers are fab, love some of their recipes. :)

Hi, thanks for the adds on MFP. Has anyone got any tips for eating out at a pub style restaurant??

The fitbit sounds good, I think I an gonna invest in one for the exercise functions and the pedometer.

mcdog - I eat out quite often, so long as you earn the calories, you can have the treats! Pub meals can be great for loading up on protein :)

aww kelper, I know it's hard, but try not to get hung up over the pounds! It sounds like you are doing fab. In the long run, eventually, one day, those scales won't be as important, I promise!

My BMI is still slightly over, and I would love it to be in the normal range, but I've had a body composition scan and after a year and half of working out and running, I have a huge muscle percentage. After 6 months of dropping weight quite quickly, I found for the next year they would barely budge, but I was getting slimmer and more toned all the time. :)
