Hiya all! Love the new thread somewhat. This fabulous :o

What your feeling sounds pretty familiar zesty I felt petty awful for the first 2 weeks. For anyone who is interested my withdrawals included the following:

Headaches
Tiredness
Bloating
Extreme thirst
Occasional nausea
Lower back ache and general achiness
Emotional madness (I burst into tears on the phone to me mum for no obvious reason Blush )
Being basically horrid and miserable to be around

Basically it was grim, I thought on a number of occasions that I was being an idiot to even bother, but if you get through those first few weeks you do feel better. I promise :)

Some snack ideas:

Olives
Nuts (blanched almonds fried in olive oil and sprinkled in rock salt feel particularly decadent)
Full-fat Greek yoghurt with yummy toppings (I also stir in double cream for extra luxury)
Toasted seeds (I like a mixture of pumpkin and sesame)
Oat cakes with cream cheese, tapenade or hummus
Fruit - berries are best sugar wise
Halved avocado with balsamic vinegar and olive oil

Whenever I've had a sugar craving that was in real danger of leading down the slippery slope, I've had some dried figs or dates. At least that way I figure I'm getting some healthy micronutrients along with the sugar! I managed to pick up some baby figs the other day and had them in the bath with a lovely cup of tea, it felt just like eating sweeties.

What good snacks have I missed?

As a type 2 diabetic I'm with you guys. I will have to go on meds if my bloodsugers numbers don't come down so I'm trying to do my best before my check up this month.

I'm having 0% greek yogurt with berries bananas and raw oats for breakfast and a few lunches, with lots of water or green tea to drink.

Hi Lettuce, welcome! Can I ask if there's a particular reason for the 0% Total? I would stick to the full fat stuff if possible.

Here's a good blog on the benefits of full fat dairy:

Hi there count me in and thank you for the new thread somewhat. No sugar for me today. But mil bought me a huge bar of dairy milk which I have hidden at the back of the cupboard. Am sure dds and dp will polish it off.

I started counting out sugar on 10th January, I found it hard after 10 days. I have slipped up a few times and had a major blow out but I think I am in control now.

My aim is to be able to occasionally enjoy my mums baking (have I mentioned how good it is) without it leading to a massive binge.

I have had quite a stressful day which hasn't lead me to the kids sweets. That is a first.

Zesty, I saw it and wasn't impressed at all. They promised to tell us which one was worse for us the answer is obviously sugar and bad fats.

Then they answered a different question Confused. They answered the question, 'which one do we like best?'

And the answer? Well duh - we like them both, together! Which tells us precisely nothing about the relative health risks/benefits.

Dumb science.

Count me in too Smile

I'm on day 11 of no sugar or wheat. I am loving eating full fat.

I haven't had any major side effects, am I lucky or doing it wrong?! But I am feeling waaaay more anxious/over sensitive than usual.

Love the acronym SOS. This is what worries me. I know that sometimes there'll be no avoiding eating sugar/wheat to be 'polite' which I can accept but what will that mean for me cravings wise?

I am trying to avoid processed foods and sugar in particular. I cannot find tasty snacks other than fruit which I don't want to eat too much of.

I keep looking at nuts but they are calorific and i want to keep my calories down. I do not want to go down the full fat/Atkins route. Been there, hated it.

Good health and weight loss are my goals.

Anyone got any good ideas for healthy but lowish calorie snacks?

How about basing your snack on protein lwb?

Boiled eggs
Biltong/jerky
Cottage cheese
Hummus and crudités?

Yes that is a good idea. Protein would keep me full longer. I used to snack on cheddar cheese but swapping it for cottage cheese would work. I sometimes have mini tubs of Philly light with veg sticks. I also like boiled eggs and lean meat. Am off to supermarket later so I will stock up.

Or you could make your own trail mix? Maybe some chopped nuts, oats/other grain of choice, coconut flakes and a few chopped dates for a bit of sweetness, covered in melted coconut oil and baked on very low until crispy?

Coconut meat/flakes on their own are also tasty and quite satisfying.

That trail mix sounds amazing. Must make some. Must add coconut oil to my shopping list. Also biltong, not sure why I hadn't thought of that as a good snack idea. :)

The trail mix idea doesn't really do it for me. Too small and fiddly and it would get all stuck in my teeth. I am obsessed about things being stuck in my teeth!

Had a lovely Sunday dinner at my mums but after a trip to the park she presented me with a scone piled with jam and cream. Well I had to eat it under the SOS rules of course! However, this would have been the start of the slippery slope and an excuse to raid the kids sweets and chocolates for thr rest of the day. But it never happened. I ate it, enjoyed it but I have eaten of or wanted to eat another thing since. I feel so full. So I do feel very good for having achieved this. The bar of dairy milk is still untouched at the back of the cupboard. Never has chocolate lasted so long in the house.

That's good to hear Dosey and well done! I am so scared that I will mess up after an SOS so it's great to know that you don't necessarily become like a wild thing seeking out crappy food and shoveling it in!!

I now know I must not buy packets of nuts to replace snacks. I just can't stop picking at them. It's really weird but since I have started eating in this way I don't know how to be 'not hungry'. I've realised that I am always snacking, drinking, planning what to eat... I don't know how to be full Grin

Well February is about sorting out the diet, I have already given up sugar in my tea, and tried to give up biscuits at work always available in the staff room, and I can't really, and don't want to, avoid the staff room as that's where you find everything out!!I tend to eat homemade food, so I need to be more aware of any sugar in anything. I'm not sure if I am giving up potatoes, bread, pasta and rice, Im going to try to avoid bread, but I am not sure how realistic it will be!

Hello all, I'd love to join you, planning to go sugar free as of tomorrow. I've tried Atkins style low carby eating but it doesn't work for me long term. Sugar free however is something that sounds sustainable to me. Not looking to to withdrawal headaches tho!

Dosey · 02/02/2014 21:24

jimmy I know what you mean about nuts. They are so moreish. I have found that if I do need to snack between meals, cheese and crackers or full fat Greek natural yoghurt does the trick. But snacking between meals is something else I am trying to give up. I am also doing 5:2 which seems to have reset my appetite.

Hi Pink so far I haven't suffered from headaches but there have been a few days where I have been an evil bitch from hell and I have had some bizarre dreams. At the moment I am feeling the benefits and feel really good, full of energy and my mood is sooo good. Dp has been at work all weekend so just me and dds. I have not once lost my rag with them, we have had such a fab weekend.

Phew, glad someone else mentioned bizarre dreams. I have had some corkers Grin

This evening I have had loads of energy. First time ever! I usually collapse on the sofa once the kids are in bed. I totally wasted it though by just saying 'I have loads of energy, I should do something" every ten minutes to DP but hopefully this isn't a one off and I can actually utilise it next time!
