I need to lose weight, not a few pounds, at least 5 stone. I am currently a size 20 in trousers, and would like to get back to a size 12. I keep making plans, but I never seem to stick to them!! Why??

I make plans, I have a little food diary, I will wake up and think that I am sticking to it today ..... but I fold at some point. I know for some reason I am not as committed to the weight loss at the moment, but I can't think why. I'm not under any particular stress at the moment, not compared to the beginning of the year when my DH and I were made redundant shortly before our wedding. My DD sleeps through the night most nights, so tiredness shouldn't be an issue.

I hate what I see in the mirror (not everything, but understandably at my size, about 90% of my body has a layer of fat that is a little too large), and I hate the actual weight of me as I walk, and my fat rubbing etc. Sometimes this is enough to stop me reaching the junk food. But other times I seem to be able to forget this for long enough to polish off a chocolate bar.

Why do I have no will / staying power? Where did you ladies find it?

I do this too. I have about 2 stone to lose and tomorrow is always the first day of my diet. I tried 5 2 recently and cave at about 8pm. I'd love to know how to move beyond this.

I did 5:2 earlier this year. I managed 2 weeks, then my daughter was ill and I caved in through sheer tiredness. That was March and I haven't really been able to stick to anything since, despite getting married in June!!

I know with me it is all in my head - I very rarely feel hungry, with an empty growling stomach etc - I just want the cakes / crisps / sweets / chocolate / bread!!

As of tomorrow I am going to walk out of my front door at a goodly pace for 15 mins and going to turn round and walk back. That feels doable.

Not wanting to moan too much as it is self inflicted but it really gets me down that I am carrying round the equivalent of my 7 year old every day. No wonder my knees hurt!

Sorry me again. Just thinking that if I took those 10 tasks and decided to add a new one each week that would be ok. And perhaps by next summer I could be at my target weight.

Do you fancy joining me??

That sounds doable to me - baby steps!!

I'm not well at the moment, so i think even going for a 30min walk might not be achievable just yet. But my goal tomorrow/this week will be to eat 3 proper meals a day (lately I have found myself skipping breakfast / lunch and then eating crap!!!)

To be honest, for most people carrying extra weight it is self inflicted. It doesn't make it any easier for us! My joints don't hurt yet, but I have weak joints (I have lax joints, and a family history of arthritis).

I think the biggest thing for me is getting some support. My mum is supposedly dieting with me ................. hasn't gone too well so far this year!!

Right - my commitment for tomorrow (Thursday 5th Dec) is to eat 3 proper meals, and allow myself one treat / snack in the evening (so a small chocolate bar, or hot chocolate with squirty cream). No other naughties throughout the day, and will try and stick to tea instead of hot chocolate / ovaltine.

I will report back tomorrow night!

Hi all!

I am a big fan of Paul McKenna's. I think his I Can Make You Thin (rubbish title, great content) and Hypnotic Gastric Band (even better content) have the potential to change the way you look at food forever.

The great thing about his way of eating is that it doesn't involve dieting (he hates the diet industry), it doesn't involve calorie counting, no foods are banned, it doesn't involve willpower and he also teaches techniques that help to combat emotional eating/eating out of boredom etc.

I can't promise that this will be the same for you, but I have found it incredibly easy to follow his four golden rules. My way of eating has been transformed, my portion size is naturally much smaller than it has ever been. And I am finding the weight melting off. And, I repeat, it's involving practically no willpower except following his golden rules. (Which are really easy to follow, actually.)

As an example, I lost a stone in a month earlier this year when I was following his rules. I didn't feel hunger pangs, I didn't miss junk food (even though junk food is totally acceptable, I naturally began to crave wholesome, home-cooked food) and it felt like absolutely no effort at all!

If any of you are interested, here's my blog about following his rules:

Morning.
Are we still on for baby steps?
I am going to go for a walk today. Will post when I have done
Have you got your meals planned for today. It will be easier to eat well if you aren't doing ready steady cook.

I have looked at the Paul McKenna stuff before but never tried it. Will go for the exercise thing for a wile first. But totally good to hear that there is something else to try another time.
Right time for breakfast before the school run

Hey NeverKnowinglyUnderstood,

Of course exercise is important - just for general fitness no matter what size one is. And I've never not done exercise. But I was able to achieve impressive peaks in weight and bulk in spite of all that exercise!

Since following PM's rules (which, btw, is the only time in my life I've ever lost weight) I've realized that exercise is somewhere between 10 and 20% of the equation for me. Whereas my food intake is between 80 and 90% of the equation!

Thanks for replying anyway. And that's sage advice re. planning meals. Enjoy your walk!

Hi,

Sorry I didn't reply earlier "NeverKnowinglyUnderstood". I'm still not feeling great so when I got up this morning I just got on with housework etc that needed to be done (I knew if I sat down and put laptop on the washing etc would never get done!).

I have done well so far today. Had breakfast, lunch and dinner, my advent chocolate and am just having an ovaltine. My only snacks that I have had throughout the day is throat sweets - I'd class them as medicine though!! Like I said, I have been fairly busy indoors today, so that has probably helped.
This weekend will be interesting. Playgroup in the morning and there will be cake as 2 little kiddies have birthdays. And more importantly (worryingly perhaps) the mother in law is down this weekend - she may bring naughties with her that I have to avoid or she may drive me to the chocolate!! Still hubby has told his mum that he will cook instead of us getting a take away, so that will help a bit. Then Sunday we are having a little christmas dinner for my nan ................... good thing my current plan is to eat three days a meal with no snacks instead of calorie counting!!

Hi Chinhealer - I have found that over time as well. Diet on its own doesnt last for long - you need a little regular exercise to help keep going. Thanks for the link to your blog - I shall have a look at that another night. I had thought of the Paul McKenna method lately after coming across the thread on here. Haven't had a chance to properly read about it or order the book and CD yet. I'm up for anything that will just re-wire my brain to eat normally, rather than coutning calories etc all the time. I have a 1yr old girl, and I'm desperate not to give her my food and weight issues!!

x

Hi ColdFeetWarmHeart

Well, I listened to the Hypno-CD at the beginning of the year in a half-attentive way, but it was really the rules which have done wonders for me. All I have to do is stick to the rules and everything is hunky-dory. (And sticking to the rules is a doddle!)

I found that the biggest change I made was to eat away from the TV. I never knew how important that could be! When I chew every mouthful a minimum of 20 times and when I savour every single mouthful, I am automatically satisfied with much, much less food than I used to be when I scoffed my meals and snacks in front of the TV.

Food tastes better. (Well, actually, junk food tastes worse when I really concentrate on it like this! Wholesome, homemade food tastes amazing and fruit tastes divine when I eat like this!)

It's great that you are conscious of the effect your own relationship with food will have on your daughter. But maybe you don't need to worry excessively. I've noticed that children have pretty good instincts re. food portions and, even, food quality. I've noticed that the first time a child is given a fizzy drink, it is a shock to their tastebuds and system! Left to their own devices, they wouldn't choose such garbage. It is behaviour that we, as adults, teach them.

Similarly with knowing when they are full. We, as adults, want and expect them to eat a certain amount each day and at each meal, as if a minimum quota needs to be met ! But most kids know how much to eat at each sitting because they simply respond to hunger. It is when we forcibly make them clean their plates and eat at the same set times every day (irrespective of hunger) that we start to mess up kids' instincts.

So I've had to unlearn all those bad habits learned from parents, schools, wider society...

But unlearning them and putting good habits in their place has been remarkably easy.

I wish you all the best, no matter how you approach this resetting of your relationship with food !

I would love to be able to eat away from the TV at a proper table! But we are currently squashed into a 1 bed flat and have no choice but to eat on the sofa. Obviously I know I have a choice whether or not the TV is on - but still sitting on my deep sofa to eat isn't the best!

I'm not too worried about her right now - she has a good appetite but stops when she has had enough, and I let her eat what she wants (as in portion sizes, not meal choices). I'm more conscious of me giving her bad habits as she gets older (large portion sizes, junk food, clearing plate even when full, emotional eating .....)

Thanks - when I am feeling better I will read his book x
