New week, new thread ... here's to another great week this week!

Hear hear, WWB. Off to get some lunch now, and will try to make a sensible choiceSmile.

Cheers to that WWB! I was good yesterday and have been really good so far today. I have managed to increase my fruit and veg intake to a more acceptable level Blush The kids were made to eat healthily while DH and I ate rubbish! They are 1 and 2 so not sure we could have gotten away with it much longer anyway!

JackieNo · 18/05/2006 12:35

I agree Schneebly - I often think that if I ate exactly the same as my DS and DD, I wouldn't have such a problem.

Congrats to everyone for last week's losses. :)

A timely thread, WWB. I was just thinking about chocolate and instead saw this thread and kept away from the kitchen. Phew!

I think one of my big problems with food was that we were always forced to empty our plates when I was a child and so I still keep thinking I should eat everything on my plate. I keep telling ds1 to just eat what he can and just leave the rest so why can't I take my own advice??? I've started using smaller plates so that the portion sizes have to be smaller. So far so good....

My aim this week (on top of walk from tube and no pasties from last week), is to start monitoring what I eat more closely and cut down on portion size slightly, also to add one more session of structures exercise on top of two at aqua ie go swimming once a week as well.

Step away from the chocolate, ct ... Grin

Speaking of chocolate, dh is doing some work at Bournville today and I will lay odds that he's brought me some chocolate from the factory shop. He's a bugger for trying to sabotage my diets and I don't know why!

I think one of my biggest problems with food stems from my childhood too, ct. My mother had the attitude that if you love someone you feed them - don't bother telling them you love them, don't bother showing them you love them, just feed them. And I think that's the reason why I crave food, and why it's my comfort.

Suejonez, you're so good with the exercise - I haven't yet worked out how to fit that in. I do have a Yogalates dvd (cross between yoga and pilates), but am too embarrassed to do it when DH is around.

my aim is to make an effort to eat more veg and fruit this week and to stop eating so much damn cheese.

I've no idea how I lost 4 pounds last week because I didn't feel like I was even trying. Also was feeling most odd last week, thought maybe I was pregnant but when I could test (Monday) was negative, so assumed was raging PMT - but still no period. Still feel rather hormonal, what can be going on? until this is resolved my head is not in diet mode. Still, I have stopped snacking which is good news.

WWB, we already know that we are the same person but it seems our mothers are also the same person. Shock

To be fiar my did show she loved me but her answer to everything was to feed us. Even as an adult, when I'd just told her how important it was for me to lose weight, 5 mins later she would dish me up a massive portion of something horribly fattening but delicious. when I would wail at her about it... her answer? Well you don't have to eat it.

Right, because I got to this size by being able to turn down a piece of lasagne glistening with fat and cheese sitting in fornt of me crying "eat me, eat meeeee"...

JN - helps because I go with my mum we encourage each other.

Ironic eh, given my earlier post about her... surprise, she developed late onset diabetes and is much better about her diet and wieght than she used to be.

Good to have a partner to exercise with. Have been parking further from the school and walking more of the way, so maybe I'll try to do more of that.

It's official ... you are me!

I guess I need to make my aim to get more exercise. I already walk everywhere, but I know that I need proper exercise to keep the weight loss going. Not sure what to do about it though - I might have a look and see whether our local leisure centre does any fitness classes for the very fat (I'm not ready to join anything where there are skinny minnies yet).

Hey has anyone tried quinoia, bought some red stuff from the health food stuff as I like couscous so much. For some reason haven't been able to motivate myself to cook it... any tips?

Report
JackieNo · 18/05/2006 13:04

I've tried quinoa, but not red quinoa. I really liked it, but nobody else in the family did, so I haven't bothered to buy it again. It goes a fantastic shape with a little curly 'tail' when it cooks.

Rinse it, rinse it again, rinse it even more, and when you think you've rinsed it enough, rinse it some more. It tastes really bitter if you don't. You can use it in anything that you'd use rice or couscous for.

Oops! Haven't dared to weigh myself this week because of all the alcohol and the Indian takeaway I had at the weekend Blush

In my defence, we were celebrating our engagement Smile But I'm determined that when we get married next year I will have a size 14 wedding dress

G'won weigh yourself, g'won g'won.. I dare you!

Otherwise you won't know how well you will do next week, it will get lost in this weeks.

WWB is kind, she won't share it with us, promise.

OK, rinse rinse rinse rinse rinse rinse then boil?

Why not just use couscous - boil kettle, pour over?

Is it worth the effort?

Report
WigWamBam · 18/05/2006 13:55

Yes, I agree ... weigh yourself, it will give you a better idea of where you are next week - it would be a shame to work hard and lose loads, only for it not to show from last week's weight. It will also give you an incentive to start in earnest this week.

Congratulations, by the way!

I like quinoa but no-one else in the family did, so you may find it's not worth the effort! I've probably got some recipes knocking about somewhere, I'll have a look.

It's nice done with roast vegetables - roast some peppers, courgettes, garlic, mushrooms, onions in the oven (drizzled with a little olive oil), cook the quinoa in a pan with about half a pint of stock and a tin of chopped tomatoes for about 20 minutes, until the water has gone and the quinoa is soft (you may need to add more stock). Add the roast vegetables and heat through.

Am still looking for recipes - I know I've got some somewhere!

Quinoa-stuffed Avocado with Saute Mushrooms

Ingredients

For the avocado:
2 avocados, halved and stoned

For the stuffing:
150g/6oz quinoa
15ml/1 tbsp olive oil
2 plum tomatoes, de-seeded and finely diced (or use some tinned tomatoes)
2 spring onions, finely chopped
half an orange, peeled and finely chopped
25g/1oz fresh basil leaves, torn
Juice of half a lime
a pinch of salt

For the mushrooms:
150g/6oz closed cup mushrooms, quartered
A little olive oil
salt
freshly ground black pepper

  1. Cook the quinoa as per the packet instructions, with the oil and salt.
  2. In a small pan, heat the oil for the mushrooms.
  3. Saute the mushrooms for 4-5 minutes. Season.
  4. Drain the quinoa of any excess liquid, and then transfer the quinoa to a medium bowl.
  5. Stir the remaining stuffing ingredients into the cooked quinoa.
  6. Peel the avocado halves and slice a small piece off the rounded edge of each avocado half to enable them to sit flat on a plate.
  7. Divide the stuffing mixture into four, and then spoon each portion into one half of an avocado.
  8. Serve the stuffed avocados with a portion of sauteéd mushrooms.

If you don't like avocados you could stuff courgettes or peppers instead.
