Best snack to survive the 4-5pm hunger pangs

I have lunch around 1pm sometimes earlier and then I am starving around 4-5pm, around the kids tea time so I end up scoffing their left overs or snacking while cooking the tea or often both. What is the best snack to eat that will satisfy me and keep me going until I have my dinner around 8pm. Can't eat dinner earlier as DH comes home late from work and I know he likes eating with me in the evening. One banana just doesn't seem to work.

Make a large saucepan of vegetable soup...just stock with loads of veg and some herbs etc. Freeze it in sandwich bags (put open bag in a bowl/margarine tub, freeze in it and then take the bag out of the bowl). Defrost one bag each day and sit and eat the soup with the DC when they have their tea. It will be pretty filling, but not much in terms of calories/ww points/is sin free etc.

Otherwise I recomend...snack a jacks, ryvita mini bites, ice poles/lollies, sugar free jelly, pickled onions or gherkins. Depending on whether your fix of choice is sweet or savoury.

The only way i have managed to lose weight is when we eat separately - which we tend to do in the week. If i cook for all of us i cook more (and also tend to have a drink with DH) - whereas when the Dcs eat one thing and me another then DH gets his own when he comes in i eat less.

I think you will find it hard to lose weight eating at 8pm every night.

Should just add - i'm no expert btw and have only lost a stone so far (1.5 to go) - so not trying to sound preachy at all Grin

I have a ryvita with laughing cow light cheese on and wait for it, (some may go bleurghhh) a dollop of chutney. It really keeps me going until Tea time and satifies the sweet tooth.

I second protein - a good handful of nuts with a banana and you'll be sorted. If I have a carb based snack for my mid-afternoon slump it makes me worse, really lethargic!

I tend to go for a hard boiled egg or two at about that time.

I was wondering if there is any all proteon snack fix if you are not home ??? I try to avoid carbs in after 4 and find it really hard what to eat if im shopping, etc. Greggs, etc all have rich carbs servings !

I got some ham from one of those tiny Tescos the other day when I was hungry. I actually ate two packets and it was about the same calories as one of those tasteless light sandwiches and kept the hunger away for a lot longer. I think most small shops will have packets of ham, chicken etc.
