Who wants to start feeling better with me?

SwimLittleFish · 01/10/2011 17:03

Junk food and over eating makes me feel crap and lethargic.

I'm going to be eating healthier.

I'm going for 5/6 good portions of fruit and veg a day.
Three healthy square meals a day.
A small treat every day.
Exercising three times a week.

How soon before I start seeing and feeling improvements?

Me! I need to lose about 4 stone :( I feel really shite all the time - tired and ill so it is really important that I just get on with it. I will be sticking to 1350 cals a day and exercising 5 times a week (have a fair bit of spare time now youngest has started school). I will be your buddy! :)

Hard to say how long it will take you. How much do you have to lose? What sort of things will you be eating?

Hello Angryfeet.

My idea is to have yoghurt and fruit or a small bowl of cereal or porridge with fruit for breakfast (1 of 5 a day)
Lunch will be salad in this heat and soup when it's colder (at least 2 of 5 a day)
Dinner will be the family dinner but I'll avoid pies and creamy meals and make sure it has another 2 portions of veg.
I'm sure I can think of lots of treats but I'm aiming to have around 100 calories worth.

I would be happy to lose 10lbs as it would get me comfortable in my clothes size but I'm aiming to lose at least 2 stone.

The most important thing for me is to start feeling better. I think I'm getting a bit down but this is all related to my size and the tightness of my clothes and the feeling that I have no energy to deal with everyday things like housework and spending time going out or doing things with my dcs.
The root of this is my crap diet.

Can I join?
I only want to lose about 10lbs but I deserately want more energy.
I dont really want to count calories, do points, or MFP.
Theres so much going on in my life I want to make it as easy as possible.
SwimLittleFish I really like your daily diet ideas - all foods I love just need to cut out all the cereal which is my downfall.
I totally believe it is making me feel so rubbish.
I am a total cereal grazer - (usually eat a lot it late in the evening)
From Monday only weetabix and cheerios are going to be allowed - dont either of them!!!!

Hello Fruitnfibre, Kaybe and hats.

Another thing to do to feel better is to drink lots of water.
I think 8 glasses a day is what to aim for. So one glass every hour/hour and half.

I've decided not to snack. Snacking is a fairly new thing and mostly serves to make people put on weight. But I will have a small dessert at the end of the day. This will be my 'reward' for staying with the healthy food all day and will give me something to look forward to.

Swimlittlefish, plz share your desserts.....
Let me add, nuts can be a great snack, esp walnuts, very good for heart. Im following jillian michaels book, boost your metabolism, she is against all the prepared foods, so am sticking to all home prepared meals. It can be tedious but feels good that im taking least amount of toxins in form of preservatives!

P.s. Im sorry if you all find my english not so perfect, its not my first language.

SwimLittleFish · 02/10/2011 11:14

Your English is totally fine Hats.
I agree with having mostly home prepared foods though my treats may not be.

Most low fat fruit yoghurts come around 120cals and most snack size chocolates, biscuits and small amount of frozen yoghurt/ice cream can be ok too.
I often bake at home so I'll try to work out a portion for around 100 and have some when I do.

How are you all getting on?

I drink a lot, but unfortunately not water - tea with skimmed milk not even decaf tea.
From tomorrow Im going to have fresh lemon in hot water. actually looking forward to it.
Hats does Jillian michael advise small meals often or 3 proper meals?

I really want to do this. OP your diet seems to make a lot of sense to me. Seems very doable.
Quick question, how do I work out how many calories I need a day?

Report
hats716 · 02/10/2011 14:00

Jillian advises of 4-5 small meals so the metabolism keeps up all the time. Also the last meal of the day has to be at 7pm . And if your aim is to lose weight, then no carbs after 4 pm.

prolificwillybreeder - there are some sites that work out your daily calorie allowance -sorry cant be more specific but there;s a prob with my laptop... for me i have 5 stones to lose Shock (after losing 2.5 this year) and i firmly believe in stopping seeing food as bad & good and simply fuel (i hope!!!)
anyway i'l kust have to keep busy as when i'm out and about i eat less.. wud love to exercise more but imagine everyone is starting at me thinking 'she's dissgusting...' :(
sending you all good luck and lots of strength!! xo

Myfitnesspal is a good site for working out how many calories you need to lose weight and can be used as a tracker.

Tbh I'm not going to count calories. I just want to be healthy and have more energy. Junk/treats is the only thing I'm going to count so I can keep an eye on it and not go above 120.

The rest of my food is just going to be focussed around eating lower fat and increasing veg/fruit. Hopefully this will result in weight loss.

Its best to do what works for you.

Fitnesspal, what a great suggestion! I've just been playing with it. I'll definitely be using it.
I sadly need to count calories or I can pretend that door wedge of cake is practically fat free!

Can I join you all?

I have been trying to eat better over the last few months and am slowly but steadily losing weight. I have lost a stone or maybe just a bit more and have hit my original target of 9 and 1/2 stone and would now like to lose a bit more to get to 9 stone. (I'm 5 foot 4 and a bit) I have been feeling fantastic, so much more energy and lots of positive comments from people. As it has been so slow I hope that I am more likely to keep it off. To be honest, although the weight loss is great, this healthy eating makes me feel so good I'd settle for staying my current weight and just feeling fantastic. So far so good.

BUT my periods have just come back (toddler now 18 months - avid breastfeeder hence no period) and I am suffering this week expecting my second period. Totally off the wagon as they say. And I feel like crap. I had managed to really limit the amount of refined sugar and simple carbs (white flour, pasta etc.) from my diet but now that is just what I want!!!!!! and unfortunately seem to be having. oh dear.

I know how great I felt only last week and I want to stay like that!!!! Help! Ideas for keeping on the straight and narrow?

I was having:

Breakfast: porridge (made with water - my mum always made it like that, I didn't know that people make it with milk until I was much older!) with Oat Milk and a spoon of wheatgerm on top.
or; homemade 50/50 bread with almond nut butter or for a treat some marmalade

Mid-morning snack: something like carrot sticks and hummus or an apple or celery and peanut butter

lunch: salad with tuna or omelette or poached eggs, with greek no fat yoghurt and some fruit. Had to be a decent meal.

Afternoon snack: something like the morning usually fruit and some protein like nuts.

Dinner: lots of vege with a moderate amount of protein (meat or beans etc.) Try to watch portion sizes and keep carbs under control and preferably brown.

I'd then have a cuppa in the evening but no more food after dinner. This was a habit that was hard to break in the beginning.

I tried using myfitnesspal but I don't use much pre-packaged anything and tbh it was a pain in the arse to figure out how much calories things were that I made. It helped just to have a little think about what I was going to have the next day the night before.

Sorry this is so long. It helps to write it down somehow. At least by sitting here I am staying clear of the fridge...

My exercise has been stuff that I work into my day - I love to go for a power walk with my ipod in my ears but it is tricky to do that regularly with 4 DC and I am not keen to go in the darker evenings. I walk up and down to school a couple of times a day. Often I don't take the pushchair and carry the toddler. I try to use the loo upstairs and jog up the stairs. I really try not to use the car much. Together with the frequent and ongoing breastfeeding that seemed to be enough to make a difference.

God, this is long now.

I'll stop. I think I'll take it in steps. Morning, midday and evening. Just get through the next few days like that. Hmmm. We'll see.

Maybe it's just the stopping BF and your hormones being a bit all over the place that's given you the munchies. Have you tried taking camomile (caps. and or tea)? it's good for female balancing; I find if i don't sleep well i eat more and it helps sleep too.

Check out Paul Mckenna his way of eating makes the most sense of ANY diet.

Hi ppeat ! I really do need to dig out my Paul CD; I felt really good when I was doing that.

My biggest problem is eating on auto-pilot. I really feel I've done a lot of damage to myself over the years through both under and over eating. I have a really hard time knowing if I'm hungry or not!

Also I nibble constantly when making food, etc. And finish what's on DS's plate if he doesn't. And I work at a cinema part time and nibble popcorn whenever I'm there whether I'm hungry or not.

handbagsandshoes · 03/10/2011 20:59

Hello ppeat - I like the idea of Paul MK but being busy means that I also like to know what I am going to eat, loosely plan it in advance and look forward to something nice. The French Women don't get Fat approach has always worked well for me.

I agree it is likely to be hormones doing things to my appetite/mood/everything - but just the pms hormones - still breastfeeding rather a lot and likely to to doing so for quite sometime yet!

Any ideas about food that helps with pms? Well, helps avoid/manage it anyway!

It's a new day tomorrow. Lets see how that goes.

The blood type diet sounds interesting. I'm off to investigate.

Good to hear from you cheerful

Sadly i live between France and England and can deffo state that many french women ARE fat!!!

IMO being slim doesn't nec. mean you are healthy either; i like having bright skin WITHOUT make up, loads of energy, no aches and pains and sleeping well etc.

prolific you can get an app. on the blood type i've got the encyclopedia which you could probably pick up 2nd hand on Amazon.

Cheerfulyank I do exactly what you say you do. I'm always nibbling and picking at things. Sometimes I eat all day long.
One of the things I'm doing now is waiting for my meals. It's amazingly liberating to not feel a slave to food.
I feel hunger now and feel satisfied with eating healthy regular meals. I think I'm lucky in that I've always enjoyed eating fruit and vegetables. I just let the crap food rule me.

This is why I'm not counting calories. I have many other issues that I feel like I need to sort out first. Focussing on my health rather than my weight seems to be helping me.
