Losing weight without weighing yourself - is it possible?

Been doing lots of reading around weightloss, esp. intuitive eating, the whole 'stop when you're full' thing - Geneen Roth, Susie Orbach, Beyond Chocolate, Paul McKenna, etc - they all advise ditching the scales, but is it really possible?

I had limited success with Paul McKenna after DS but somehow lost confidence in it, stopped listening to the CDs and stopped losing weight.

DD2 is now 16 weeks and, although I haven't (daren't) weighed myself, my clothes definitely aren't any looser. Do I need the motivation of a weekly weigh-in or can anyone reassure me they've lost weight by going on how they feel in their clothes?

Before my 40th I ate less for about 6 weeks before weighing myself, only going by the look of me and my waistband

I get too hung up on the numbers so it worked for me

But you did weigh yourself eventually?

I have an, ahem, landmark birthday coming up and am surprised and disappointed how bad I feel about it, because I am just not happy with myself.

Of course it is possible. Your clothes will tell you, and your eyes. Cut out foods that are more than 5% fat and do a normal amount of exercise.

I haven't had working scales in my house for many years.

yes I did weigh myself eventually then I wished I hadn't-not because I weighed more than I thought but because once I'd weighed myself I wouldn't be able NOt to do it again

FWIW I ahve a pair of (wholly inaccurate) scales in my bathroom and I do a custy-I pee then weigh

Never weigh myself. Lost around 20 lbs in 2010. Ate less, moved more.

Oh, and only know how much I lost because of a doc's appt. I knew I was slimmer, because dropped two clothes sizes.

Interesting reading...

I lost a lot of weight when I moved out of home as a student - walking everywhere and living on toast - but didn't realise I was doing so at the time. I would weigh myself very occasionally as I didn't own a pair of scales, but although I can't deny I wanted to lose weight, I was never really trying. I'd like for that to happen again, obviously, but 20 years later my circumstances are so different I'm not sure it could.

My weight was steady for quite a few years but has, predictably, crept on as I've had kids.

The intuitive eating thing makes sense to me but I really struggle with controlling emotional eating. When the kids make me cross I head straight for food as a distraction and I find it very very hard to change that behaviour.

I'd rather not 'diet' because I'd rather find a way of eating and exercise/moving that's sustainable for me long term.

I probably need to weigh myself to get an idea of my starting point but I know it will ruin my day/week to know that number. However, relying just on clothes size for feedback takes a long time - I think I need to know I'm going in the right direction by monitoring pounds lost weekly or fortnightly. Hmmm.

Clothes would hang better on you after 2 weeks of sensible eating

IIWY I wouldnt weigh. Especially if you do not want to 'diet'

You can also take measurements of your body. But you have to remember that exercise will create muscle so factor that into new measurements.

As for the emotional eating - it's fine if you don't have crap in the house to snack on. I don't buy any crisps/chocolate etc. so I don't eat them. It's easy to wander into the kitchen in search of something, and wander out again empty handed when you realise you would have to actually cook something to achieve the emotional eating fix. Or fruit.
