Same as a maid of homour. I always thought the difference referred to married / not married.

Organise the hen do.
Generally be the bride's 'right hand man' on the day and the night before. Friend, companion an generally calmerer downer!

Normally also a witness and walks down the aisle with bride for a chruch wedding.

My Matron of Honour was like the best woman at my wedding. She was my chief maid. She helped with organising flowers, spent the night with me prior to the wedding, organised the younger ones, held my train. She escorted me in the bridal car with the person giving me away, the other children went ahead with mother of the groom (would have been mother of the bride too, if she was here) I think they are the basics of a matron of honour.

More than that, she helped me decorate everything the days before, she bought me face masks for the night before, she ensured I had everything I needed by having her own list! She checked my lippy was on correctly before I entered!

Yep, just a different term for if the chief bridesmaid is married. The things she would do are really the same.

Put stockings on Bride and do up bride's fiddly suspenders after bride has just put on and painted her long false nails that she is not used to wearing!

Help bride to go to the loo if she's chosen a big meringuey dress with hooped underskirt...

Oh yes Guy Fawkes - my maid did that too!

Fortunately didn't have to hold my hair whilst I was sick as she did for me regularly at university
