How to find witnesses for an elopement

The ceremony is just going to be my intended and me, plus our children. I don't want to ask anyone we know and the register office can't provide anyone.

Do people really ask passers by? I don't think I'm brave enough!

I’ve seen lots of people post on here with details asking for volunteers.

We had a photographer and she was one of the witnesses. But ppl have asked in here before if you say when and the area sure there will be volunteers.

We did, but nearly didn't find any....it wasn't as easy as I thought I thought it was going to be, everyone had somewhere to be or ignored us!

I've seen people ask on mumsnet, and I think that has been quite successful.

I imagine many passers by would be thrilled and tickled to be asked - it would be a nice story to dine out on.
My whole church congregation were involved in staging a surprise wedding for a couple from the other side of the world, who thought they were just going to exchange rings in their ancestral church here in the IK after their wedding in Australia.
We all enjoyed it enormously, as did the couple.
Most people would want to be helpful to you on your wedding day, surely?

I’ve seen people volunteer from MN. If you can give us a rough place and time I’m sure someone will volunteer.

Thank you all for responding. I was just expecting tumbleweed on my return.

I'd love to be asked by strangers to be a witness but as hazeyjane says, I'm worried people won't have time, as it's a Monday morning when I imagine most out and about will have things to do.

Just in case, it's Monday 15th April at 1030 in South Manchester ...

Lovely story Babdoc!

Ooh, where exactly?
I’m not too far, would have to bring the kids (10 and 14 so no trouble)

This country or overseas? Here registry office or hotel staff will act as witnesses or ask here!

Thanks for the suggestion Georgie. Do you think Chat would be the best place?

It's Sale Town Hall @Hoppinggreen. Children welcome!

Stuck It's just a register office. They can't provide witnesses, unfortunately.

Thank you all so much! You've solved a problem but made things quite real. I'm very nervous now.
