Taking wedding dress with on honeymoon - silly idea?

Dp and I are going to drive Route 66 as our honeymoon - Dp is a massive classic car fan and Route 66 with all the car museums and memorabilia and stuff is his dream holiday.

I'm really excited to go too but mainly because of the natural things that we can see along the way like the Grand Canyon, national parks etc.

I was thinking, especially since we are probably not going to have a lot of photos done on the day due to time constraints, it might be nice to take our wedding outfits with and have some pictures taken (not professional ones obvs) at some beautiful and iconic places along the route? It'll be a once in a lifetime kind of trip so I think it would be lovely to have some really unique pictures, and it'll be a nice reminder of our honeymoon rather than them nice looking like regular holiday pictures.

But would it be a silly idea to take them with? We'll be hiring a car to drive the route so transporting them won't be a problem, I'm not thinking the whole she-bang (veil, shoes, etc) just the dress & suit for quick changes!

So, silly idea? Or not?

Lovely idea. Go for it & do what makes you happy.

Cool, I think, in an ironic sort of way.

Sounds fantastic! You could dress up, pose infront of some amazing cars (I'm sure they'll let you) and take filter snaps for a truly memorably honeymoon! Enjoy :)

No not silly at all. Sounds like great fun and lots of lovely photo ops await you on that route. Do it!

I took mine with me. We went to Madeira last summer and booked a photo shoot on the last day followed by dinner in a two Michelin star restaurant. I booked a blow dry before hand. I also took my shoes because I loved them almost as much as my dress (and my dress was short so shoes were important!). I'd say go for it, it's a nice way to wear your dress again and it's a good conversation starter with others 2who see you in your dress!

I think that sounds really cool. (I like the idea of taking the veil too Grin)

Yay! I was waiting for people to come up with a things I hadn't thought of that would make it a bad idea Grin

I might take the veil! I'm not 100% sure yet as I haven't got the dress yet (it's still being paid off) but if it's really heavy or takes up tonnes of room I might not be able to. I'm not even sure if I'm definitely going to have a veil but I do want one.

I have visions of us standing overlooking the Grand Canyon, maybe Las Vegas, Los Angeles, the Cone Motel (can't remember the name!), so many opportunities. Not every single one but a good few.

Yes, do it!

My friend had a massive meringue but squashed it into her case and had some great photos as a result.

Go for it. You only get to wear it once otherwise.

Great idea!
Do a photo book or collage on your return.

That sounds really fun. I'm imagining some like ANTM - putting fuel in the car at some classic old service station or wearing the dress with cowboy boots and hat

Great idea! Most dresses go away in a box/cupboard to rarely see the light of day ever again!

Not yours!!

I think that is such a cool idea!
I would definitely get a photo book made.
It's such an icebreaker. You should definitely get locals in the photo shoots or taking pics of you both

Do it. We travelled to Paris on our honeymoon in full wedding gear. Fun experience, brilliant photos, incredible memories.

Are you going away straight after the wedding? Just thinking, if your wedding day ends up being rainy then dress might need some attention (dry clean?) before taking it away again & might be worth ringing round places now to book it in as it’s such a unique item.

This bride appears to have made a business from travelling with her wedding dress. Here are her galleries

I think it's a lovely idea... A word of warning though, my dress ended up filthy by the end of the wedding day!

Mostly during the evening reception, so if you want to keep it pristine for photos I'd maybe consider a second dress to change into?

(or I might be just a mucky cow!)

Curly, I think that would be my ideal job Grin

I do plan on having the honeymoon straight away after the wedding as we are getting married in the spring and I think it would be a nice time to do it before the ridiculous heat of the summer kicks in and things get super busy! But finances may dictate otherwise..

I'll have to try and keep it as clean as possible, might be difficult as the venue is partially outdoors and the dress has a bit of a train but I should have a wrist strappy-y thing to keep it off the floor for dancing.

While it could be fun, I actually think it will get quite logistically challenging.

Where do you plan to change into your outfits at some of these places? Public restrooms?

Even then, to get to some of the best photo opportunities may require you to hike and you'll then have to do that (or an entire visit somewhere) in your wedding dress.

Well, I've asked Dp about it and he isn't keen to put it mildly Sad

I think it's because he has anxiety and hates being the centre of attention, and tbf I think being in wedding 'dress' at various tourist attractions probably would draw quite a bit of attention!

So I think I'm just going to take my dress and he can take pictures of me Grin
