Thinking of not doing favours....?

kocerhan3 · 16/06/2018 14:35

So many people have commented to me how "pointless" and "unnecessary" favours are at weddings - yet I feel like we'd still be judged for not doing any?! Would people care if we didn't? Would they notice? I don't want to spend loads of money on them for no reason. So therefore:

Can I get away with not doing favours at all?
If I have to, what's cheap/cheerful and will be appreciated/taken/eaten?

Thanks in advance!

Of course you won’t be judged, nobody will even notice.
They are indeed pointless.

Ooh watching.

Sorry no help. We made my own but they are too bad to give to people. I could say our son made them 😂 no money to buy more now!

We didn’t do any. Sometimes you just get a chocolate or something, which you eat and forget about. Or sugared almonds that no one eats. Nobody cares!

I think you can definitely get away without favours. We did and no one felt they’d been hard done by.
I’ve been to lots of weddings and the favours are honestly not the thing I remember about them.

One of our friends had big bowls of retro sweets on the tables. They were much more exciting than packets of seeds, small frames, etc.
They kept us v happy while the speeches were going on.

We got personalised sweet bags from eBay and then filled coffee jars with sweets and put them on the tables. Cost next to nothing.

Glad to hear these replies!!! I like the retro sweets idea, that's a good talking point for people to reminisce over a little too!

We're not! Can't see the point. The only one I've liked is a Tunnocks tea cake but they've got no relevance to us or our day so seem a bit pointless

We didn't. Nobody mentioned it. Can't remember if there were favours at the last wedding we went to... They're a waste of money

Nobody will mind either way. We did personalised love hearts (got a deal at the wedding show so it was like 200 mini packs for £40) and some gingerbread in a little chest.

No relevance to our day, but kept the kids quiet ;)

I personally think that favours are tacky. We didn’t do any, no one raised an eyebrow.

Personally I feel favours a bit pointless and a waste of money. If you You can donate to a charity in lieu of favours if this is something you sinus's be interested in. Some charities will give you place cards to say that you have done this so all your guests will know.

I didn’t do any. Honestly can’t tell you whether the last weddings I went to had them either. Personally I think they’re pointless and a waste of money. Spend the money on a extra drink for your guests instead, the vast majority would prefer that compared to some personalised sweets.

Favours are a symbolic thank you for having attended the celebration. I’d be slightly insulted and would think poorly of the organizers.

I think favours are a nice touch, but completely unnecessary. I can barely remember the favours I've received at weddings. You are already buying everyone drinks and dinner during the day, if you don't want to also spend money on favours then don't. Your guests probably won't even notice. We're marrying next year and will be donating the money we would have spent on favours to a local charity instead.

I thought the sugared almonds was supposed to be significant of the number of DC you wish to have following the wedding?

I would go for a huge glass bowl (Ikea does loads) filled with those sweeties from the £ shop (Swizzles, Wham chews, lollies, LoveHearts type)
Retro sweets sound good but they are ££

No one will notice if you don’t have them(or care if they do)

However I was at a wedding where they had a bowl of Lovehearts on each table (ordinary ones not personalised)and I thought it was lovely.

We didn't do them. To me it feels like why would you need to give everyone a present to say thanks for coming to your wedding? Surely people would come because they want to share the day with you.
I mean you wouldn't give everyone a thank you present for coming to a birthday party would you?

They are indeed pointless. I would only judge as far as to think you were being sensible.

It always makes me sad to se they number of favours left behind at weddings.....

I think favours are sweet. They needn't cost a lot, they can be prepared weeks in advance and they help to personalize a wedding if it's held at a public place (hotel etc.).

If you don't have the time, money or inclination to include them, then it doesn't matter either.

We didn't do them either. I think we gave key people flower arrangements to take home at the end.

I didn't have individual favours put on the tables for all our guests. However we did a sweetie buffet (as my DH has a massive sweet tooth) with loads of stripped paper bags for people to fill with sweets. I bought I load of bowls for cheap at wilko and bulk bought tubs of haribo. People are loads of sweets during the evening party and then took bags of sweets home for themselves/ DC.

We made quirky place cards so people could have them as favours to take home if they wanted to.

Why on earth would so many of you put bowls of kids sweets on the table to share? Confused
It’s a wedding reception, not a 5 year old’s party.

I agree with putting together your own pick and mix - we did this at our wedding - early on we ordered a customised stamp with mine and DH's name and the wedding date which we used to stamp the back of the envelopes for invites and then we got a load of brown paper bags off Amazon for a couple of £. I Spent a happy hour pre-stamping all the bags in front of the tv and set them up on with jars of sweets - people helped them selves. The whole thing cost about £45 for 70 people
