Reading/poem suggestions please, with a nod to equal marriage.

Hi,

My gf and I are getting married this summer and I would like my sister to give a reading during the ceremony.

We weren't really having any references to it being a same sex marriage, such as rainbow cakes and confetti etc. We just want to get married and didn't feel the need to do this. I know many gay couples like to do this, which is lovely, but it just wasn't really for us.

That said, I would like a little nod somewhere about equality and I think it would be lovely coming from my sister in the form of a poem or reading. Problem is, I can't really find anything I like.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Just giving this a bump. Even if you don't know of any yourself, but are just really good at finding things Grin.... I'd be really grateful.

The poem 'a good wedding cake' is a nice one. Easily found on google.

Thanks Lone, that's nice. I'm not sure I see any nod to equal marriage, but maybe I'm being dim Grin Entirely possible!

Any other suggestions?

It's a Haiku not a poem.

I promise to love
and will gladly honour you
but obey? no way!

This day I married my best friend
the one I laugh with as we share life's wondrous zest,
as we find new enjoyments and experience all that's best.
the one I live for because the world seems brighter
as our happy times are better and our burdens feel much lighter.
the one I love with every fibre of my soul.
We used to feel vaguely incomplete, now together we are whole.

This is an extract from Richard Blanco's "Until We Could" which I quite like.

Love is the right to say: I do and I do and I do...

and I do want us to see every tulip we’ve planted
come up spring after spring, a hundred more years
of dinners cooked over a shared glass of wine, and
a thousand more movies in bed. I do until our eyes
become voices speaking without speaking, until
like a cloud meshed into a cloud, there’s no more
you, me—our names useless. I do want you to be
the last face I see—your breath my last breath,

I do, I do and will and will for those who still can’t

vow it yet, but know love’s exact reason as much
as they know how a sail keeps the wind without
breaking, or how roots dig a way into the earth,
or how the stars open their eyes to the night, or
how a vine becomes one with the wall it loves, or
how, when I hold you, you are rain in my hands.

Do you mean equality of same-sex marriage or equality within a relationship generally? I may have understood. If the former:

Proud, by Louise Wilson
As I approach the dark, wooden open doors,
As I hear the music start to play,
A rush of excitable nerves take my fear,
As I remember what it took to get to this day.

Hiding beneath a display of friendship,
Creating a web of lies,
Not knowing everyone was watching me fall in love,
The love in my heart shining through my eyes.

Defeating opinions and comments shared,
Telling everyone, I am in love!
My heart taken by a beautiful woman,
For once, love is enough.

So here I am today,
Walking towards you so very proud,
I am in awe as I only see your beauty,
Can't hear the music nor see the crowd.

I take your hand in mine,
How we fit so perfect, so cleverly,
By far the most perfect day in my life,
Our proud wedding ceremony.

Carol Ann Duffy’s Valentine has always been one of my favourites since a colleague had it at his wedding years ago.

Thanks for all the lovely ideas so far.

Myse1f, I should have been more clear. I meant equal marriage, as in a same sex marriage.

I don't know if this will help but this is my reading

Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your root was so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. that is just being in love, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two.
