To some extent they can cost what you want them to. You can buy dresses on the high street for £150-200 or go up to the thousands for a designer dress. You could buy sample dresses off the rack in a bridal shop or even get a white or ivory dress from anywhere and get married in it, which makes it a wedding dress.

Personally have a look at some styles you like and that will give you a rough idea of the budget needed.

Avoid ordering a dress from China on EBay unless you have done a lot of research. Often a false economy as they need so much alteration or straight up replacing.

My pronovias dress was £1,300 (wedding is in September). That was over my budget which I set at 1k but it was pretty original and exactly what I wanted. The only other one I really liked was something like 2.5k- didn't even try it on, just dropped the tag like a hot potato. And this wasn't even a particularly salubrious dress shop, just a nice one in mid-Ulster! My sis paid £900 for a full-on tulle princess gown last year which was lovely.

You can keep an eye out for sample sales and events which can help reduce the price, but it's a pricey game getting it from a bridal shop. You can save by going online and avoiding the big names like Hayley Paige, Martina Liana, Ronald Joyce etc. But I did like the shopping experience and having a bricks and mortar place to go to to collect it, seamstress recommendations, etc.

If you want a shock look at MoTB outfits. Shit the bed, like; there were places I went to with my mum and it was a shiny dress and jacket set for literally 1k. The standard price was around £600. People must pay it, but I don't know who! Mum jacked it off and got something similar from HOF for £120 in the sale.

I bought one prior to that from eBay but couldn't get into it a month before the wedding so panic bought.

Mine was £89 from marks and Spencer's (got married last month). I took it on honey moon for a photo shoot and it travelled really well. I can wash it at 40 degrees. It was so comfortable and I might dye it and wear it again.

It's entirely up to you. It can be £20 or £5000. It depends on your style, on the type of wedding and of course, on your budget. I do recommend sticking to your budget. My friend had £1000 budget for her wedding dress, but then she saw a £5000 one, and guess what: she took a freaking loan from the bank. I'll have to admit: dress was something else and her wedding was like a fairytale. However, 2 years later she's still paying for the loan with the wedding loooong gone.

My dress was £2800, but it was well spent money. I felt like a princess and it was my dream dress & in my budget.

Have been married twice. First in 1999 and got a dress for about £500 from a bridal shop. Spent maybe £100 more on veil and headdress.

This time bought one pre loved on eBay. Took a chance but it fitted perfectly and was £200. No veil and accessories about £10 this time.

Did try some on in a bridal shop and think they were around £800. I preferred the one I had though .

Not sure what percentage it was of the total cost - less than 5% I would say. No idea the first time but then my mum and dad basically paid for everything
