Any fellow 'runaways'?!

DP and I have decided to get married in the next 18 months, it will be first for me, 2nd for him. We both agree we want to just go away and get married and then let those close to us know. Has anyone done similar? Any regrets, hiccups, things you would do differently?!

Yes! We ran away to New York, got married at City Hall and then came back and had a party later to please celebrate with family and friends.

We wanted to get married, but didn't want the fuss. It turned out to be an expensive holiday, but would 100% do it again. We were at a very traditional family wedding last year and although it was lovely, it reinforced exactly why we ran away.

We got married in Venice, just us and it was amazing! As above, the more I see of traditional weddings the happier I am that we did it our way. No party afterwards for similar reasons as to why there was no big UK wedding! Do it.

Me, ran away and don't regret a single minute. We did have a party afterwards but just a back room in a pub. Total cost was about £200 including the actual wedding (got married in a registry office in this country but not where we lived) Do it!

Kind of, people knew we were going to get married but equally knew they weren't invited. Got married in Mexico in 2009. Dont regret a thing. Neither DH or I like being the centre of attention and the thought of spending our house deposit on a party made me feel sick. The whole thing cost us about £5,000 but that was 2 weeks all inclusive in a five star hotel, flights, ceremony, wedding dress/suit which I thought was pretty good value. Also all the stress we saved ourselves from organising a big wedding. It was bliss.

Yes! DS1 was given a 'wish holiday' to spend Christmas in Florida at a wish holiday village and we got married in their castle while we were there! I cannot stand weddings or the whole wedding thing so it was perfect and no one minded at all. Smile

We're thinking we 'might' have a get together in the following month or so. My only hang up is the DCs...DP has 3 who all live with their Mum at other end of the country and I have DS who is 7 and lives with DP and I...

So it's looking like a Gretna job...just the 2 of us with an overnight stay 😃

Good luck for Gretna. I think it sounds very romantic. My parents got married just the two of them (and me as a 1 year old) and they are still very much in love more than 30 years later.

Do it! We married at San Francisco City Hall, parents and very close friends knew what we were doing. We arranged photographer, flowers and hair online beforehand and had the most amazing day, just the two of us. Would do it all again in a heartbeat!

Alfa are you from the UK? How easy was a non-Vegas US wedding to organise?

We went away to Mauritius just the two of us and got married in a resort. It was kind of a honeymoon with the wedding as part of it. Family knew before hand and we had a small get together when we got back. It suited our characters far more than a big do. I highly recommend it.

Oooh, how exciting! I thought I might be a bit weird not wanting the big white wedding thing but it's clearly more common than I thought Smile

We didn't run away as such, we just planned it so it was just us and witnesses. The register office really understood and were lovely to us. We look incredibly happy in the pictures, the whole day was perfect and neither of us regret a single thing.

We've almost decided in a date and it's going to be Gretna, just the 2 of us, then a short break in a lodge 😃
