Fish ok as only meat option?

Apologies for another menu thread!

DP and I have been veggie for years and have only recently started occasionally eating fish. The wedding will have loads of veggie friends but also some quite traditional meat & 2 veg type guests.

Everyone coming knows we don't eat meat and, though I don't think anyone would be expecting us to serve a meat option, some are probably wondering a bit worried what the food will be like.

Would you meat eaters be satisfied with being offered just one 'meaty' main dish and for that to be fish?

Am thinking probably Trout as most people seem to like it and we can get it locally so know where it's come from. Served with seasonal veg like new potatoes and asparagus. The other option will be a really nice veggie thing (probably filo parcel with tasty filling).

The wedding is ages away so idle thoughts at the mo but would be interested in your views.

I don't like fish but I'd happily eat the vegetarian option. DH would be happy with either.

I don't do fish but would try a veggie meal happily.

I'm not sure. I know a few meat eaters who really dislike fish and don't eat it. Fish could be controversial due to it not being to a lot of people's taste. My DP, for example, won't touch fish weirdo

I hate all fish so I wouldn't be happy with that at all. I'd probably reluctantly have a go at the veggie option but it would depends what's in it...I can't eat mushrooms for example

I wouldn't bother with the fish. I hate fish anyway but it would leave a fishy aroma at your venue which people will talk about for years (personal experience at Grannys party).

I'd much rather see a good vegetarian dinner.

Should've stated, it doesn't mean you have to serve meat though! Another veggie option that isn't fish would be fine.

I wouldn't necessarily like the fish option, I think either go all veggie of have a meat choice.

I'm allergic to fish... But would happily eat the veggie thing

Odins - God I hadn't thought of the smell! Fish really does linger so good point!
Seems there are lots of people who don't like fish. That's really helpful, thanks Smile

Trout is a bit tricky, lots of small bones unless it's filleted very well - and yes the smell could linger

No - lots of meat eaters really don't like fish. Go with something more universal - free range chicken or something. If you want to cater for them.

Me and dh hate fish, especially trout, were handcore meat eaters but considering your vegetarian we would suck it up and have the veggie option (and I'd probably sneak some sandwiches in my bag and eat them round an corner discreetly, but I am a terribly rude gannet)

Ooh unless your veggie option is the fill party filled with different cheese, mmmm that would be yummy (I'm really hungry)

I think you should provide two vegetarian options. Consider people with allergies e.g. nuts (my friend is veggie and allergic to nuts and always struggles!)

Given how many people dislike fish I think they would actually prefer something veggie.

I don't think you have to serve any meat if you don't want to.

I eat meat, fish and veggie food and would be very happy going without meat or fish at the wedding of two vegetarians!

Very common at Jewish weddings to have fish and no meat. In fact common at all Jewish celebrations and everyone has a great time.

Trout is not a good option. Lots of people don't like it. You could possibly get away with a fish that's quite mainstream like cod, salmon, tuna. I would just stick with entirely veggie TBH.

Just go with vegetarian.

I think cheese is the way forward. The feta thing you mentioned sounds good. And most people (veggies and meat-eaters) like a tasty cheese... halloumi, baked Camembert, etc. Unless there are quite a few vegans coming?

If I go to a restaurant I expect a veggie option. Therefore, perhaps you need to consider that people who are not veggie would expect a meat option.

Lots of (fussy!) people I know dislike fish AND often used veggies (eg mushrooms) and cheeses, eg goat's cheese, feta. But as long as you're clear in advance about what'll be served, fussy types can plan to eat elsewhere at some point, or bring snacks!

Lots of DC are fussy too.

I am an omnivore and struggle to understand why some people can't bear to have a meal without meat. They clearly haven't tried any decent vegetarian food.

I think trout would be a bad idea because a lot of people won't eat fish with bones in. If you must have fish salmon would be a better idea.

What about a posh kind of fish and chips OP?

I don't eat cheese or 'fishy' fish so I'd really struggle (these are pretty much the only 2 things I can't stomach) I'd going fish I'd suggest cod/haddock/hake as something more crowd pleasing.

But it's not a restaurant, it's a catered party hosted by vegetarians. If a couple are veggie wholly or partly on principle, a lot of meat being eaten at their wedding might be a big problem!

My friend had a veggie/vegan section buffet at her wedding with amazing bread, cheeses (veggie section), salads etc.

Being non-veggie doesn't mean I have to (or even want to) eat meat with every meal. However, being squeamish, I would prefer not to have to try and cope with a fish corpse in polite company. All those tiny bones, and the skin, and the eyes (I have clearly never recovered from DH's 21st birthday meal).
