Wedding ring, left or right hand

I'm not sure where to ask this but here it goes.

I am under the impression that putting a wedding ring on the left hand is for Catholics while on the right is for Protestants.

Is this correct?

Wtf? Left! Everyone!

PotteringAlong Wed 10-Aug-16 16:56:22

No! Left for everyone.

coughingbean Wed 10-Aug-16 16:57:06

Left for everyone.

Although now I am doubting myself.

Nope, definitely left for all.

SweetChickadee Wed 10-Aug-16 16:58:32

Left in Britain. Some Europeans put it on the right

Globetrotter100 Wed 10-Aug-16 16:58:58

I was told something like this when lived in the Netherlands...is it maybe a Dutch thing?

strawberrypenguin Wed 10-Aug-16 16:59:12

Always left

Left definitely in UK but have seen in London (on the tube because I'm nosey!) some people with rings on their right hand. I assume they are from another country where right is the norm?

Catholic mother, protestant father, both wore rings on the left.

I know in Brazil it is common for the wedding ring to be worn on the right hand during the engagement and it is then transferred to the left upon marriage (for both sexes).

Right in Germany and Poland...

NuggetofPurestGreen Wed 10-Aug-16 17:03:11

I know a Polish couple that wear them on the right. Otherwise everyone else I know is left.

wobblywonderwoman Wed 10-Aug-16 17:03:52

Left in UK

Right in other countries

Odd now I look back on it or maybe I was being a trend setter and didnt know it.
I obviously wore my wedding ring on my left hand. However when we separated I took to wearing it on my right hand. When we divorced I removed it

MrsJoeyMaynard Wed 10-Aug-16 17:10:18

In the UK, it's normal for everyone to wear the wedding ring on the left hand.

SystemAticcally Wed 10-Aug-16 17:11:36

Yes, that's what I keep seeing a few times a week hence my question.

TwistNshout Wed 10-Aug-16 17:11:36

Left

Out2pasture Wed 10-Aug-16 17:15:23

OP Wikipedia has a hefty paragraph devoted to this very question.

In some Catholic and some Orthodox countries[5] such as Austria, Bulgaria, Colombia, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India (mostly for men), Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands [if not Catholic], Norway, Perú, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Ukraine, and Venezuela the wedding ring is worn on the ring finger of the right hand.

MiddleClassProblem Wed 10-Aug-16 17:17:48

I come from a family that don't wear them just to confuse things!

LunaLoveg00d Wed 10-Aug-16 17:20:48

I'm an atheist and wear it on my left hand.

FuturesAChanging Wed 10-Aug-16 17:22:52

Left hand UK, right hand Germany and other countries. Have a friend that got engaged in uk, wears engagement ring on left hand, married in Germany wears wedding ring on right

toadgirl Wed 10-Aug-16 19:35:53

Add this to your meal, AGL

toadgirl Wed 10-Aug-16 19:43:02

^ Sorry I'm an idiot - wrong thread. As you were!

LynetteScavo Wed 10-Aug-16 19:51:56

I didn't know anybody wore their wedding ring on their right hand...I have one on both - almost identical rings (long story). But I'm in the UK and thought everybody wore their wedding ring on their left hand.

EssentialHummus Wed 10-Aug-16 19:57:32

Russian DP wears his on the right.

Thundercake Wed 10-Aug-16 19:58:19
