Is chicken the cheap option?

The cheaper of the 3 options for our sit down meal from our venue is a chicken dish.

I have always considered chicken to be a 'cheap' option. I don't know why but always think a chicken roast is not as nice as a beef/lamb roast. I do like chicken & i would eat a lot of it really. It may also be because we buy so much chicken in our house as bulk because we eat healthily and it is just so easy to prep chicken on the George foreman to go with veg for work...

Is this just me or do other people see chicken as the cheap option?

ps. I'm not a snob honestly! Blush

Isn't there a line in the Father of The Bride movie about "the cheaper chicken"?

I think chicken is usually the cheaper option on the menu but I would never judge anyone for that. I'm not sure anyone who would deserves to be invited to any wedding!

I would never judge anyone on choosing it but out of all the wedding meals I've had chicken is the worst. It's hard to mass cater chicken without it being dry IMO.

I'd rather have really good sausage and mash or a hog roast or something like that if money was an issue.

Thanks Rosie and Jedi - you have confirmed my worries! Haha. Our venue is lovely and i'm sure the food will be fantastic whatever we choose but I cant get it out of my head, that people will think 'ohhhh, went with the cheaper option....' (not our friends and the people that we actually want there but the family members that you have to invite for the sake of the parents and the ones that invited us to their wedding etc! they'll be the judgemental ones!) Money is not an issue as such, but I think for the sake of £500, I would rather enjoy my own wedding meal and not have that thought going around my head! Besides, if we go for the middle option, we get a selection of choices ... I already knew the answer to my question didn't I

Thanks again! Flowers

I have never thought about the cost. I've always presumed that chicken is the safest option for a lot of people you don't necessarily know well.

A caterer worth their salt should be able to cook chicken properly for the number of covers they claim to have room for. If not they shouldn't be doing the job.

In Father of the Bride it was referred to as 'chipper chicken' because they had been coerced into going for a v expensive seafood thing!!

We had a hot buffet and chose pork medallions, chicken breast and a butternut squash curry for the main meal. To me, chicken is inoffensive and appeals to adults and children alike, so as Momb says, it is a safe option. There were other dishes we could have chosen but some people can be fussy with, say, fatty lamb or fish so we felt that out of all the options available, chicken was a good option. Price had nothing to do with it.
