Would you think we were mad with these table decorations?

We are really not doing the big fancy wedding thing and running on a very tight budget so our reception (DJ and buffet in a local social club) will be nothing fancy either but the one thing I would like is some half decent table decorations but with a budget this is proving hard to find.

There will be about 10 tables (about 60 people) so I thought maybe 3 big red apples with holes to fit tealights in, with a scattering of black rose petals and silver pieces of rock individually wrapped along the length of the table.

Oh this would be on white paper table cloths :o

I think that sounds nice. Won't the apples go brown though? I made 3d apple ornaments out of old books last Xmas - using a tutorial a bit like this one www.cheekymagpie.com/?p=40 - I painted the edges red and dipped them in glitter when wet. They looked really pretty although a bit time consuming, you could recruit friends to help?

Hmm those do sound nice!

Our reception is the day after the wedding (long story) so I just thought I'd do it in the morning, wonder how long they'd keep.

Actually I don't know if the brown would matter as the candle would fill the hole, like this (hopefully :o)

I don't understand the silver wrapped rock. Do you mean wrapping tin foil round pebbles? Not convinced!!!
The apples, candelas and rose petals sound lovely. Can I suggest trying to make one soonish, and then seeing if it will last a few days with the tealight in? It will give you an idea if making them all in the morning is possible - or even if you could make them over a few days before the wedding.

Oh I see, they look nice! Definitely practice though as the cut out bit will have to be perfect sized (I can imagine jagged browning edges for the first few attempts!)
I assumed you meant sticks of rock and then that's the wedding favour too? Can't you get customised rock with your names written through the middle - might be pricey though.

We had customised rock candy - circa £200 for 130 sticks

Haha could've been a bit clearer about the rock, we have these little just married candy pieces

Ah Ha. Those look good, and the whole lot sounds great of the apples are doable.
Have a practice, and see what you think, but I can't see a problem.

Give it a try, how are you going to cut the holes in the apples so that they fit the tea lights perfectly?

Also, time yourself doing one, so you leave yourself enough time to do 30. And do you know where you will buy the 30 big red apples from?

I bet you can find a biscuit cutter just the right size for the tea lights if you hunt around a cookware shop,

I also did homemade table decorations on the cheap. I went to the garden centre and bought plants in cheap terracotta pots. That way I got to give them to people as thank you gifts for things they had done for the wedding.

Buy an apple corer but don't cut all the way through and then just use the corer to take extra bits out until you get the right diameter and depth to fit your tea light then paste on a bit of lemon juice into the hole to prevent the apple going brown.

I wouldn't bother with the rose petals if you are on a budget. They might not last, might stain etc etc and don't bring as much to the overall look as the tea light holders, for example

Njgella made these apples on one of her shows with a special cutter that made the perfect sized hole.

Yes to a cutter the right size.
And apples will brown much slower if you simply rinse them out with cheap supermarket lemon juice.

You could possibly use an empty tealight case to cut the hole depending on how sturdy it is. I wouldn’t use petals either, I’d go for crystally things like these www.homebargains.co.uk/products/7543-special-occasion-scatter-crystals-x-12-bags.aspx

Looks lovely

To cut out just take the wax out of one tea light and use that as a cutout, perfect size everytime.

Depending on the table sizes it might be a bit lost. Have seen similar with pumpkins but obviously they were much bigger.

Went to a wedding recently where all the tables were different with different sized vases, tea cups, candelabras, jam jars and candle holders on.

The bride went to poundshops, charity shops and asked to borrow them from friends and family. She hired one candelabra and one large martini glass.
She ordered a load of spring flowers from Morrisons and just chucked them in the vases.
It looked stunning, the best decorations I have seen for a while and was very cheap.

Is it a Snow White theme?
Not sure I can picture it tbh.
Could you not go to ikea or the range and get some cheap red tea light holders?

My mum and I are going to trial an apple at the weekend to see how doable it is.

I've seen a few tutorials online where they position the tealight and kind of score round it with a sharp knife then cut an x through the centre, dig it out a little at a time until you get the right depth.

I may change my mind but for now the idea is there :o

I did kind of twig on the Twilight thing but not really bothered about the similarity.

I hate plants and flowers so that is definitely not an option other than the silk massacred rose petals.

We also live in the sticks so unless you can get it from a supermarket or online its pretty impossible to get anything and I think that for our budget plain tealight holders are about all we'll get which I feel are a bit dull.

We do have some black and silver confetti shiny confetti type stuff but I keep changing my mind.

At this rate I will be putting tealights out and saying feck it because none actually gives a crap anyway me included :o
