Gah! Anyone else tried on their wedding dress with a month to go and hate everything?

I love my dress, I do. But it's strapless and I bought it when I was still breastfeeding and ultra thin (size 6). My arms looked slender and (possibly because my boobs were fuller) I had no armpit bulge. It looked great.

Now, I knew that I had put on a couple of pounds since then but thought that it was no harm. However, I just tried it on and I have armpit bulge now and it looks shit!

ARGH! What was I thinking getting a strapless dress? Also my skin looks so dull and I just look wrecked and my hair is so stupid and limp.

What do you doooooo when there's a month to go and you look the complete opposite of a blushing bride?

Buy a shrug?

Something like this

amazinglightshow · 12/04/2013 12:51

I know, I should. I need some sort of cover up anyway but just haven't found the right one. Hate the thought of spending ££££ on a scrap of lace that will be worn for an hour or two.
Things are also complicated by the fact that my dress is not white (you may remember my search from this thread. I sort of thought that I could just get a fine-knit crew neck cardi in the same colour as the dress. Finding one is easier said than done though Confused

I will be wearing a flower crown with ivory flowers; would an ivory cover-up of some sort look shit with that colour dress?

Argh I don't know.

Oh, I remember you!

Can't remember the final dress though- do you have a pic?

Would this work?

amazinglightshow · 12/04/2013 14:04

This was the final dress - shade Misty Rose.

That Coast thing might work! Not sure if there's too much pink in the dress, though - the bolero looks more 'mink' coloured. I might order it and try it anyway. It's quite cute!

I think I'm just getting dress-related cold feet.

A shawl / stole would work. Is your dress the pink one?

How about - and I know this is out there but get something that totally contrasts such as navy blue, get a bolero/shrug/scarf and also a tiny, tiny belt so it looks as if the dress (stunning by the way) has the contrast in it.

How handy are you with a needle and thread? Rather than a belt you could get some material and add it as trim, then use the same for a shawl.

This is the kind of thing I was thinking of with the belt.

Are you sure it's not a bra issue?

MrsLettuce · 15/04/2013 20:05

That's a beautiful dress!

I agree, the armpit fat thing could easily be a bra issue.

Would you consider a shawl as cover up?

this could tone beautifully with the dress also in cream.

this is oddly presented and you have to zoom, but could be very pretty

this?

this in brown

this only one colour available but I think it could be lovely

too traditional?

(this is pricey, bridal and a scrap of lace but it's stunning so I'm linking anyway)

Crawling · 16/04/2013 07:02

I think I would work my ass off to lose the few pounds how much have you gained?

amazinglightshow · 16/04/2013 10:05

Hi folks. Thanks for all your replies.

ssh, I'm not great with a needle at all :( I wouldn't trust myself to go near the dress! But it would be a good solution for someone more handy.

Songbird and Mrs. Lettuce, I was trying the dress on without a bra so I don't think it's a bra issue. The bodice of the dress is designed to fairly snug and made for the small-boobed. I'm going to try it on later today with a good strapless bra (that I got recently measured for) and see what the lay of the land is. Mrs Lettuce, thank you SO much for digging up all those links. I really like the look of your third suggestion (though it seems to be out of stock). The 'too traditional?' one, even though it's much more than I'd like to spend, could also work well. I'm going to look more closely at both of them.

Crawling - I'm not sure how much I've gained, under 5 pounds I'd say. I was pretty thin while still breastfeeding and also my boobs were much fuller so both of those things combined made the dress look great on. I am still thin and, since the dress still fits, don't actually need to lose weight as such. But I DO need to get serious about toning in the month that's left to go!

Thanks again

The wonderbra ultimo is great - well worth a try.

TBH unless one is a skinny 15 year old with ballerina boobs (and even then) there a few items of clothing that aren't significantly improved by a good bra.

watchingout · 07/05/2013 16:35

Don't beat yourself up about skin/ hair - you have a young baby FFS!

You'll look lovely on the day cos the excitement will add a zing to everything. And you won't be worrying about your armpits Smile

amazingface · 11/05/2013 14:59

Thanks for the vote of confidence, watchingout :) Yes, I've decided I don't care.

I ended up getting a scarf (in Primark of all places, woohoo!) that's quite similar to MrsLettuce's third link above from Notonthehighstreet. It's perfect, ivory lace, and looks great draped across my chest and tied loosely at the back. Probably sounds a bit weird but it's great and works really well with the dress.

Now all I need to do is just STAY AWAY from all of those beautiful wedding blogs...they are a health hazard!
