US (and other places) Hurricane season

It's very belated I know, I've been discussing the various hurricanes in another thread in the time I have recently, but anyway, better late than never. From t'other thread:

//www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at1+shtml/054806.shtml?cone#contents Irma at the moment looks like it's going to slide into the Gulf of Mexico, grazing the west side of Florida. However, the GFS model has it turning earlier, so there is some uncertainty still. (as there often is)

Jose is expected to become a Hurricane over night tonight, but I don't think it will be as major as Irma due to outflow from Irma effectively choking it. However, depending on the path it takes it could still compound misery.

I'm more worried about the various Islands that Irma is traveling over rather than the potential for a US landfall, simply because they have the means to evacuate and more resources. They are going to be completely devastated. Though Branson is riding Irma out on Necker Island.

I found this website last night that has some good information about Hurricane Irma along with some webcams (although they might not last long once the hurricane hits and I think the Anguilla one has already gone down/they've turned the power off.)

Hurricane is showing up well here.

I've been following the news on Anguilla. We've been there , it's tiny to be dealing with Irma.

It looks horrific on the news today.

It's going to be devastating for the small
Islands.
I don't get Branson's logic?! And the staff are all staying with him...

I don't think that they understand how powerful this one is, they have th mentality of 'oh I've ridden out storms before'. This one is Major. Same with a friend in Florida. She's potentially in the firing line. She thinks that being a Floridian automatically confers special powers I think.

I know, it sounds like some misplaced bravery but what is the point of putting yourself and others and risk? I would be getting the hell out of there if I could.

It's going to be absolutely devaststing for the small islands. They will need a lot of international support in the cleanup and rebuilding efforts. My friend lives in the caymans, yet to hear how they are faring. I understand st Martin and st barts have been hit badly

The Guardian and BBC are doing live blogs here and here on the hurricane.

The webcam at San Juan Beach (Puerto Rico) is still working for the moment. Conditions look awful already and there's supposed to be a couple of hours before the worst gets to them.

Thanks Gloria, the quote that stood out for me from Puerto Rico was 'The mayor was speaking to the Guardian from her home in San Juan without any electricity – large parts of the city and surrounding towns have been cut off from power in advance of Irma in order to try and protect the island’s grid. “Power infrastructure is very, very fragile and we are expecting to be without power for the next four to six months,” she said.'

That's pretty shocking.

I feel for all those on the Caribbean islands. They have nowhere to go Sad

We just got back from Cuba on Monday. I pray for everyone's safety as there are a lot of poor people on those islands.

I had a Great Aunt Irma, she was a wicked woman 😠

So many of those islands are so flat, too.

I'm hoping that it just skims past in the sea 🤞🏼

They still haven't heard from Barbuda since the storm's eyewall hit the island. It's been hours and no-one has been able to make contact or knows what's happened there.

From Twitter it looks like the BVIs have taken a hit, photos of a lot of destruction. Added to that Richard Branson is bunkered down on Necker Island!

90% of Barbudas buildings destroyed according to the guardian. First time a hurricane has had 185mph winds for more than 24 hours.

It always seem the bigger storms are fragile and smaller (well, medium size) storms are stronger. Including tornadoes

But with global warming and warming of the water and such, that could change

Report
OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/09/2017 22:11

I'm not quite sure what you mean? This storm is as large as france and parts of it have gusts similar to a severe tornado. It shows no sign of weakening.

oh I see, they are saying that it's unusual for a cat 5 storm to remain so strong. Yes it is, but the ocean is unusually warm and wind sheer is low. I'm hoping that wind sheer from Irma will choke Jose, but this year looks to be unique

I'm here in cayman too HerRoyalNotness, we're absolutely fine for the moment but very wary of the ferocity of Irma and the fact we have 2 other storms churning away.

We may get some choppy seas and small amount of rain over the weekend but the storm has shifted higher that we don't expect too little.

People here are very wary of major hurricanes since hurricane Ivan in 2005 was a cat 5 direct hit and we all know many friends in Florida, Bahamas and the BVI - praying that they're safe as can be.

Utterly devastating for so many people. Cayman is breathing a sigh of relief that a major hurricane has avoided us for the time being, but we remain vigilant and very concerned for our friends...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/09/2017 07:12

Stroke, I'm so glad for you that Cayman is avoiding the worst of this one. It looks like it has turned enough to spare Puerto Rico the very worst too.

NOAA are saying that Irma is showing signs that it may be about to weaken a little. I wonder if it is going to go through an Eyewall replacement cycle? They also say that a direct hit on Florida is more likely, but that it should begin to weaken by day 5 due to wind sheer.

I hope that the residents of the Florida Keys and Bahamas will see the news from the Leewards when they wake up and it will come home to them that they need to evacuate/take all precautions and not tough it out.
