I'm still waiting for a proper winter...
Not necessarily snow, but frosty mornings and actual days where you wrap up to go outside. It's been a bit of a let down so far for me!

Anyone know if we're heading for a cold spell?

I was dreaming of a white Christmas....

Just love having an excuse to bundle up warm and think a good cold snap might clear some bugs away! I also love snow but then don't need to go anywhere in it so I know I'm in the minority.

It's been proper cold here this week - we had a ground frost at least though the car said it was 4 degrees.

Just starting to feel wintery now. The sunsets are doing it for me.

It's been proper cold here.(NE) We've had frosts and the gritters are out at night.
It's not quite as cold as last year but I've been grateful for that as we've been having our heating replaced.

I have been wrapping up to take dog for walks. It was only 3 degrees last night but now 6. Has rained too.
Dull, dismal, and damp cold is the worst and much prefer sunny, cold and crisp.

As much as I love a cold, snowy, white-ish winter, I love lower heating bills more.
I'm still not in debt with my energy company yet and my heating only clicks on in the morning.

Why anyone would wish for cold weather, with the ice, snow associated road accidents, inconvenience and general chaos is beyond me. Ooh yes, please bring on the high heating bills and increased deaths from cold in the elderly, yes please!

Obviously I don't wish for bad things to happen in bad weather and I'm aware it costs people lots of money in heating. It was meant to be lighthearted.

There are far too many threads on MN from posters shivering in cold homes because they can't afford to put the heating on. So to wish for really cold weather is crass and unthinking.

I had winter tyres put on my car last week and bought some proper snow boots. So now we can expect a mild, snow free winter.

Not really bunbaker, our agriculture partially depends on a reasonably cold winter.

Herons fly, when you say all the reports, do you mean the Express? They don't reflect the met office forecasts ever, except perhaps by rare coincidence.

A decent cold snap keeps the slugs down in the garden too. My raspberry canes are still fruiting, I would like a couple of weeks of crisp cold too.
Also, mild winters seem to be followed by damp summers IME (not scientific but holds true for the last decade), so I'd endure a bit of cold if it means a nice summer to follow.

Yeah, as well as keeping pests down it helps some seeds germinate.

I find I actually need less heating on cold sunny days than I do milder grey days, solar input through the windows makes a huge difference to our house, but I realise that's not the case for all houses.

There is also the issue of course of vitamin d insufficiency caused by lack of sunlight and also SAD. Even for non sufferers grey skies=gloomy moods.

Oh come on bunbaker. I said it was a lighthearted nostalgic thread. I never wished people to be freezing because they can't afford the heating.

northern don't worry, I felt all nostalgic for proper cold and sunny weather when reading your OP!

I love cold and crisp days, it makes it so much easier to get out and enjoy the few hours of daylight than when it's grey and drizzly.

The garden and allotment are really showing signs of the weather being warmer than normal. I'm getting fresh growth on my lavender, and the soil on the allotment is still wet and claggy, and the nettles doing really well!

I think I read that the sun's not strong enough for Vit D production, till about April in Scotland. However brightness would be nice. Has seemed murky for all of our 8 hours of daylight today. And for all it's problems, snow brightens up the place in the middle of winter.
