Another severe storm 2nd/3rd November?

Quite possible I'm afraid.

Very early days in forecasting land but it has been showing in the models for a couple of days already.

GFS takes a deep low across northern scotland which would bring gales (severe??) to southern Scotland and northern England.

ECMWF and UKMO have it less deep but further south and not causing nearly so many issues.

NAVGEM brings possibly severe gales to England

GFS spotted last nights storm very early on and actually wasnt a bad forecast. We need to keep an eye on the situation.

Ah but this one will never make the news as it affects Scotland and northern England rather than the centre of the universe that we all know is London

Fingers crossed this one turns out to be nothing dangerous.

oh please dont 17leftfeet - I always do my best to treat storms according to strength and impact rather than location.

Lets see what happens objectively and we can compare notes after the storm.

I saw something mentioned on FB about possible storms this coming weekend for the top half of the UK. Im waiting and seeing as its still early days in weather isnt it?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/10/2013 15:22

Its really early days and its very possible it might not be the top half that gets it if it happens. at the moment its trends we are looking for.

17left is right though - I saw press reports saying last nights "sub-hurricane force" storm was "the worst since 1987".

I reckon that in the last 26 years I lived in the Outer Hebrides for 10 years and we had force 10/11/12 storms every winter. Even in the 8 years I've lived in Glasgow we've had force 8-10 every year and 11 2 years ago.

I'm sure you're great about it, but the media really doesn't pay as much attention to storms that don't affect the SE of England!

Our turn? Oh joy.

Kitten I know you treat all weather the same, I always look out for your threads because you are pretty accurate

The British media however...
We had 6ft drifts of snow at the beginning of march, didn't warrant a mention until 2 days later when the snow hit the south east

Last night's storm seems to have just clipped SW England. Should I be worried about this one?

CatAmongThePigeons · 28/10/2013 16:04

I do hope the forecasts are wrong, some may be hit twice in one week which would be horrible. Sad

I wonder if I don't notice the bias because I always hunt out the weather news?

press reports were shit though even in the south we've had stronger since 87.

It has been quite a high impact - 4 deaths so far and 200, 000 still without electricity. I've counted lots of trees down including some great old oaks.

We just dont know where the storm ( if it happens) will hit on Sunday. The models as I said at the beginning of the thread have very different outcomes.

You'll have to excuse me if Im coming across as a bit snippy. i don't mean to be, I'm beyond exhausted. I've been involved in the clear up today as well as a very busy, physically active day yesterday and awake most of the night. I'll be nicer tomorrow :)

Well I think you're being snippy! (17) So there!

For the record, this storm hit a significantly wider expanse of the country than London, and most of the news coverage was from the South Coast, including a fair bit in Wales.

Irish news showing a potential storm for Friday, and yes we're flying back Friday Sad

OYBBK is this current run of lows to do with the jet stream switching direction recently? (Did I get that right, is it the jet stream that switches every 14 months?) The lows seem to be lining up in the Atlantic. I know they normally do a bit in Autumn but they're really charging in.
