According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

I remember posting on this thread in October and predicting "a wetter winter than normal" rather than snowmageddon...

...maybe I'll refrain from doing so next time.

Hasn't happened, has it? Still, there's a few weeks of winter left so might still be a chance of snow but don't think it'll be the snowmageddon that everyone was saying it would be.

what happened? where was snomageddon?

AchyFox Sat 14-Dec-13 23:26:02

It's more nomageddon at the moment.

Lovely blue skies for much of the daylight hours ( which isn't many atm ) in Edinburgh and so calm after yesterday's gales. Just a hint of tiny wee snow flakes at teatime. Cloudy now and cold so reckon we may have some overnight, but it's to warm up again tomorrow.....

MooseBeTimeForSnow Fri 06-Dec-13 19:28:10

-30 again today with clear blue skies

SaggyOldClothCatPuss Thu 05-Dec-13 23:25:04

(Also a huge amount of uncertainty showing)
That's weather for you! grin

Well, I went out with little dog in my new eskimo It was very blustery but wind came from SW and was not icy like before. Then after we got back home the sun came outconfused.
Now due for the last walkies and it looks like rain. We have 10 degrees outsidehmm .

SpottyChristmasCakes Thu 05-Dec-13 10:00:06

It feels colder though doesn't it digerd? I need to buy some de icer as have to leave for work at six am tomorrow

digerd Thu 05-Dec-13 09:44:51

Brr was -2 last night and the sky was red. Now lightly clouded over. The sheep had been brought out again into the field and yesterday were back in the barnhmm.
Also at 3pm yesterday the playing fields were full of sea gulls sitting on the ground.
Now +4 and must take dog for a walk in my half eskimo outfit.

I'm hoping for some snow on Friday as I have to do something that I don't want to do, and if it was snowed off that would be excellent.

Think I will be disappointed though.

FunnyRunner Wed 04-Dec-13 15:43:26

It is freezing here today after lots of mild weather. Strong, cold wind and a bit of sleety stuff earlier.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 04-Dec-13 13:00:32

FunnyRunner Wed 04-Dec-13 12:10:35

Ooooh, does that mean we are in for some excitement? grin

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 04-Dec-13 08:46:38

Ah-ha. I've just looked at the ECMWF ensembles (collection of model runs, all with slightly different starting points) and the average is much colder than the operational model. (Also a huge amount of uncertainty showing)

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Wed 04-Dec-13 08:38:27

I've updated the warning thread for tomorrow.

Might not be just the north who gets a bit of excitement. It's possible that the cold front travelling south might develop into a nice squall line, giving sudden high winds etc. keeping an eye on that.

As for the coming weeks.... Looking on the average/mild side according to GFS. met office are hinting at something colder half way through the month. I'm not sure why but obviously they have access to models that the public don't have.

Will start a 'will it snow at Christmas' thread on Sunday smile

OhYouMerryLittleKitten Tue 03-Dec-13 20:04:49

I've created a specific warnings thread discussing the gales and snow here

Not expecting any snow in the south, snow risk is primarily confined to the north (and primarilyScotland I think at present esp the NE). interesting hints of wintery weather mid December which I'm keeping an eye on.

Going to be very very cold though later on Thursday into Friday for the whole of England, Scotland and Wales.

digerd Tue 03-Dec-13 17:51:18

Just been out side and it feels bitter cold. +5.8 outsideconfused
Ominous or the usual inconsistency?

HesterShaw Tue 03-Dec-13 10:43:31

Oh yes "in the grip" features strongly.

Caption of someone walking their dog in the snow: "Hiker battles blizzard."
