Just for fun Xmas Smile

GFS had Christmas Day in sight now. Of course it's massively a long way off in forecast terms and it can't even make its mind up what is going to happen on Friday yet!

disclaimer: am only an amateur and this is my hobby. Please don't rely on it for any crucial decisions - I don't want you to get into pickles cos I got it wrong!

And now for the forecast......

What are the chances for Herts/London way??
DS is desperate for snow!

BeaWheesht · 09/12/2012 17:51

Oh please tell me there will be no snow between 22nd and 27th in northern England and southern Scotland?!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 09/12/2012 17:55

low pressure sits to the south of us bringing in a north easterly feed.

The south, especially the south west stays relatively mild and wet.

From central England (away from Wales) its colder and looking possibly snowy, perhaps a fair bit in places with the NE getting snow showers.

I want snow for Christmas! Never had it, even when living in foothills of Alps. Snowed before Christmas, melted and has grey Christmas and then loads of snow for NYE which buggered party plans.

sittinginthesun · 09/12/2012 19:15

Uh oh. I'm going to be watching this thread. We are supposed to be travelling to Yorkshire on the 21st for the weekend. It's got to be pretty bad to miss BIL's wedding...

travellingwilbury · 09/12/2012 19:18

Snow in Sussex would be marvellous please. Enough that I can't work would be really good x

Ooops sorry

MirandaWest · 09/12/2012 19:20

Can it snow in York but then be fine to travel down south on Boxing Day please?

BahSaidPaschaHumbug · 09/12/2012 19:21

No. No no no no no no no no no. It is not allowed to snow until at least 15th January.

mankyscotslass · 09/12/2012 19:32

Ooh even here???

Manky, the current picture would have you a bit far west.

As ever, my loathing of bloody bastard snow keeps me glued to the threads! However, even I will allow some snow on the afternoon of Christmas Day. Actually, if it could remain clear until approx 1pm and then cut us off for about three days that would be ideal.

So, OhYouMagicSnowyKitten do your stuff!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 10/12/2012 07:36

Morning all Xmas Smile

Well the 00z GFS is showing a fairly similar set up to yesterday's model with a dominant low pressure. This time it is a little more progressive with the low pressure moving a bit further north, bringing in slightly warmer temperatures and I think making snow more marginal.

Mild in the SW, and the west coast. Further north from central England up temps around 2c. Probably meaning that any snow would be confined to higher ground. Lots of precipitation around and actually rather stormy in the SW.

Not a great model run tbh.

Morning all snow watchers.... I'm hoping here in East Surrey we're far enough east to at least have a nice sparkling frost on Christmas day.

CherryTheRedNosedReindeer · 10/12/2012 09:10

fat chance here!!!!! only ever had snow on christmas day once that i can remember and that was 2010 when it snowed practically everywhere.

SledsImOn · 10/12/2012 09:15

Well I'm odd I know but sort of hope it does - I'm having a baby in the next few weeks and I quite like it when there is that lovely, quiet 'close down' feeling in the world, when the snow just stops everything - it kind of makes people prioritise, and everything is a challenge.

I probably shouldn't enjoy this Blush But the idea of giving birth when it's snowing and everything else has stopped and people are helping each other and huddling together - well it sounds kind of nice.

headfairy · 10/12/2012 11:09

hmmm Sleds, you may change your mind later... dd was born on NYE 2009, my last ante natal appt was on Dec 21 (my due date) for a sweep. I took ds, forgot my phone but didn't think it would matter as the hospital was five mins away and the appt was going to take minutes right? Er no, it was raining when I arrived, and while I was parking the car I watched the temperature drop from 3 degrees to -3 in the space of about ten minutes. While I was in with the midwife I could see the rain turning to snow. By the time I was ready to leave the hospital the entire area was in total gridlock. The M25 had become an ice rink and the ensuing traffic jam caused massive delays. I was advised to not leave the hospital as I would be stuck in traffic with ds for hours. Eventually I was there for 8 hours. As I'd left my phone at home and dh couldn't get in touch he thought I'd gone in to labour and was panicking as he couldn't get home because of the travel chaos. I didn't get home with ds until 10pm Shock

It did clear up for Christmas, but then the snow came again just after new year, I ended up having a cs, so didn't leave hospital until Jan 3rd by which time we were snowed in again. I had to walk the last 200m to our front door as we couldn't get our car in to our road. Walking up hill through deep snow 3 days post cs wasn't fun. I was bricking it that I'd fall over. Because of the weather I didn't see a midwife for a week by which time the skin hard started growing over the little knot end of my sutures which had to then be cut out The midwife when she did come walked for an hour through the snow carrying her scales :o

I get what you mean about being all snug and cosy and wrapped up with your newborn. I guess it depends if you have other children. DS was absolutely stir crazy and desperate to go out, but because of complications I couldnt' drive for the full 6 weeks, and was pretty slow at walking. I spent a lot of time sitting on frozen park benches bfing dd while ds screamed around the playground - and let me tell you wind chill on a wet nipple is no laughing matter :o

SledsImOn · 10/12/2012 11:44

Point taken Xmas Grin and sorry about your poor nipple. I've only ever had summer babies...I think I'm being vastly naive to think a winter one will be 'fun'!

headfairy · 10/12/2012 11:46

no, it's lovely having a new baby at Christmas, just not terribly practical :o

headfairy · 10/12/2012 11:48

It makes planning birthday parties interesting... ds is September so birthday parties are easy, park... garden... anywhere outside. Currently I'm trying to organise poor DD's party but being New Year everyone's away or busy doing family things :(

Hmmm yes I can see that might be an issue.

I should have thought about it really at the outset!

headfairy · 10/12/2012 12:11

:o you don't think of these things 40 weeks earlier! And even if you did Sod's law states that you'll end up with an equally awkward birthday any way!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 10/12/2012 19:12

Latest GFS has vanished the low pressure. Cold inland, possible snow showers down the east coast. Mild in the sw!
