OYBBK and fellow weather geeks: equipment recommendations

We have an old barometer in the hallway, but woukd like to monitor wind speed, direction etc.

Can you recommend anything?

Have a wee weather station that does pressure and temp. For wind direction I look at the clouds/listen to the various whistling noises from my windows/walk the dogs/see which way planes are landing.
For wind speed I look up the Latest observations from my nearest Met Office weather station site ( 88mph today ).

You see I do that too regarding wind direction (if it hits the flat at 45* it's a south westerly etc) but I quite fancy some spinny things in the garden (anemometer) that can measure gusts and a weather vane that isn't wrought iron and ££££ fancy (though that is a dream too). There seem to be a mind boggling range on amazon, all digital and fancy that can hook up to your pc/mac, but they seemed very advanced!

Today's weather got dh and I talking about being able to monitor more, as we could watch the barometer drop and it was pretty cool :)

Lablover is very sensible re wind speeds. (blimey lablover, must have been a bit rough!!!)

For monitoring wind speeds you need to get the anemometer above roof level (and if you are a bungalow amongst higher houses then you need to get above their roofs! you can lose a huge amount of wind speed by not having it sited properly which is very disappointing when there's a big storm.

So, first of all - what kind of budget are you thinking of (can range from £50- £1000) and do you want an anemometer and is it important to you if it can download data to your pc?

am going to be logging off, so assuming you want a bit of a fun instrument rather than serious measurement then

with an anemometer and pc connectivity:maplins one seems to do ok for the price but I dont know about reliability

no pc but an anemometer oregon scientific I've had one of theirs without an anemometer and it was very reliable.

Hello! Sorry to have missed you :) under £100 was our budget, and more fun than anything else as it was to get the dc interested. We are very exposed (up on a ridge) so I was hoping I could have one visible from the kitchen window.

The two you have linked to look great-the Maplin one is out of stock at the moment unfortunately, but I'll keep and eye on it :)

OYBBK getting a bit blase about tiles coming off my roof ( another indicator of it being a bit windy ) slept through the worst.
I've a feeling that today, an anemometer would have either blown away or malfunctioned. Apparently the wind recorders on the Forth Road Bridge went off the scale, then stopped due to a power failure

we guessed 8-9 on the Beaufort scale given that the trees were nearly horizontal at one point! I hope things have settled for you now Lab :)

Am glad they look good :) Good use of the beaufort scale there seashells!

Tis one thing that worries me about my anemometer - is it blowing away! (another is pesky pigeons trying to roost on it) (oh and one real consideration is it is a bit vulnerable to lightning strikes so I have the weather station connected wirelessly to the house)
