Help!!! How to warm up baby foods on the move.

Advice please!!

I have just started to wean my 6month old DS and am having a nervous breakdown about all aspects of weaning.
I have now decided that pureeing is the way forward along with giving DS carrot sticks etc to play with. However, I am perplexed as to how I go about warming purees up when I am out and about, especially when we go out for our walks where there are no facilities for warming baby food with a microwave etc.

Please can someone advise the best way to do this as every book I have read says that the food has to be piping hot all the way through and then cooled before feeding it to your little ones. Short of taking a calor gas stove everywhere with me I am not sure how to do this.

Help!!

you will probably find that your baby is perfectly happy to eat (cooked through) food at room temp and it is fine for them so don't worry about it. I bet if you did a survey of 2nd or subsequent babies, none of them got heated up jars/purees on a regular basis like pfb's did !

I used to either heat the food up to piping hot beforehand and then it would have cooled a bit by the time it was needed or take something that doesnt need heating e.g. a fruit pot, a yoghurt, banana, etc (take a fork so you can mash it if you are doing purees or give it as finger food)

I agree with sleepwhenidie - it was a real pain with dc1, with dc2 & 3 I'd learnt my lesson and got them used to room temperature right from the start, in fact dc3 sometimes has to make do with room-temp even at home if I'm feeling especially useless rushed...

Purees at room tempreture are fine but be cautious about giving raw carrot sticks as they are a choking hazard. Lightly steamed/roasted is fine. Have you thought about weaning the 'Baby-led' way? This way you will be able to feed your DS exactly what you eat so long as it is cut into chip-shapes with no worrying or faff about needing to puree or buy jars.

It develops their motor skills and their hand eye coordination really quickly, fosters independance and self-esteem and introduces them to real tastes and textures sooner rather then the bland mush that is baby jars.

From my experience, baby's that have been rought up on jars are harder to introduce to 'real' food when the time comes that they no longer need help with eating and belive me, that comes sooner then you think!

I removes the faff and potential battles form mealtines and gives the power back to your child.

You can buy a Tommee Tippee flask from Tesco which has cup that goes over the top. You take the top off and pour the hot water in and then heat the pot a bit like warming a bottle.

I give either mashed banana or non-meat meals if I'm out and about (eg hot mashed potato with cheese, cold boiled egg mashed with milk). If it is hot food it is OK to heat it up before I leave home and by lunchtime it is usually still quite hot. If you'll be leaving it more than an hour use an insulated bag (small cool bag) as it will keep food hot for longer.

It won't be long before you can give more solid things like pasta shapes, cheese on toast, boiled egg, which are OK hot or cold. So don't worry too much about a few banana-and-yoghurt-based lunches for now!

Between your thighs?

Seriously - room temperature should be fine. If you are walking can you take in flask?

I went out and bought a whole load of products for feeding on the go, but DS subsequently decided he did not like purees and so I ended up BLW. However, I still maintain that the products would be good. Firstly, the Wean Machine (warning - does not go in microwave sterilisers!) allows you to puree food when out (like a giant garlic press) and comes with built in spoon and lid. Secondly, Fisher Price do a flask which incorporates a bowl to pour the hot water into and and pot to keep the puree in. But the room temperature tip is great if you little one will have it.

This was my problem back when my LO s were weaning and I designed a way to heat up food without electricity or a hot water bottle. Reply if you would like more info. X
