Hi, my ds always loved to bf and i would feed pretty much whenever he wanted but since Thursday he has refused to bf. He has what i think is hand foot and mouth, and i think he has a few spots in his mouth. He is eating food as normal and drinking juice but just completely refuses the breast. The result is me feeling terribly upset and sad and having extremely sore boobs! I keep asking him if he wants a feed but he says no and when i ask him why not he tells me its sore. Does it seem like he has self weaned? Has anyone elses lo done this?

Thanks for any replies.

Sounds like he has self-weaned to me, no point in forcing him? Can you express a little just to ease your soreness?

he's self-weaned

try hot baths for the engorgement - it'll take a couple of days

don't ask him why he doesn't want a bf but you could keep offering as logn as you're not nagging

thanks for the replies, i knew he'd self weaned but did'nt want to accept it. I suppose i just had to hear from someone else, i just did'nt think it would be so suddenly. I bf my dd who's almost 6 until she was 3 and i decided to wean her as i was pg with my ds. She would have went on for quite a while longer i'm sure. I'm not so uncomfortable today but i just feel so sad that its come to an end.

It is sad but in the same way isn't it a little bit of a relief that he chose to move on from it himself? i.e. he's becoming a big boy? I wouldn't want to put any extended BFers down but I felt giving up at just under a year was a huge sense of relief as well as a tinge of sadness about a babyhood gone. You still get lovely cuddles from them and they will always be yours.

yeah your right, it is about him not being a baby anymore aswell as the closeness that i feel when has a feed. Maybe its also because i'm 43 with 5 kids and won't be having anymore although i'd love another one. He is a very cuddly little boy so i don't have to worry about that.

My dd suddenly said one morning "I don't want milkie any more" and never bf again. she was 3 and a week. I was a bit sad, but pleased that it was her decision.

He may also be on a nursing strike, it's not unknown for older babies/toddlers to refuse for a while and then come back to it after a while.

Hope your boobs aren't too sore!
