Early weaning due to reflux?

My GP has advised to start weaning at approx 4 months due to DD's severe reflux (DD currently 15 weeks)...has anyone had any experience of this? At the moment she is drinking the following (mixed with medicine)

6am - 7am - 6oz
10am - 11am - 5oz
2pm - 3pm - 5oz
5pm - 7.30pm - 2 lots of 4oz pre and post bath/story etc
11.30pm - 7oz

She doesnt sleep through, but doesnt tend to want food at night. She is stuffing hands in mouth, but has been a "sucker" since birth. The reflux upsets her and GP feels weaning will help this, but would be grateful for some thoughts.

DD is also my first and havent got any idea of how to even start the weaning process (which could be adding to my resistance!)

Would be very grateful for any advice!

Cousins dd and ds both reflux. GP also advised this and she weamed dd at 4 and half months all fine. Did ease reflux a bit also medecines she was on really effective. Think they have bit more chance of gagging on food but obviously you'll be nearby so don't worry. Her dd is 22mo now and off the relux meds and is fine so there is light at the end of the tunnel! Good luck.
(her ds not yet 4 mo so hasn't weaned him yet)

Thank you for the positive message - made me feel much better!

i did with dd and it made no differance to her reflux at all other than to cause her to puke differant colours.

i'm certain it did however affect the severity of the intolerances she was later diagnosed with.

her sleep became far worse (and it was practically non existant already) and she was generally miserable 24/7.

her reflux only improved once she started on chunkier foods and finger foods at about 7 months

you can start with baby rice - see how it goes

Just to say today I saw a locum GP as mine is off (with swine flu apparently!) who said do not wean under any circumstances yet hmm , which has thrown me again! I'd just been out to buy the baby rice and was coming home to give it a go, so holding off at the moment again now!!

Why ? because of swine flu or the age ?

No, no! Age, its the GP who was off sick rather than DD!

I dont know but ds3 has reflux and is 8mo also on gaviscon and comfort formula. Because he was so bad I did try weaning him early at 5mo but he just projectile vomited. so I stopped carried on with gaviscon and started again just after 6mo with no problems. Ds under paeds for different reason who had to dodge as he vomited. they suggested that if the meds didn't improve matters to have him referred in in.

So I think if medication isn't helping Iwould push for a referral. La leche league also had quite good info on reflux.

Thanks so much. She has her last lot of jabs tomorrow during baby clinic so think I will ask again. She is also on comfort mixed with gaviscon and although she is gaining weight the vomiting seems to be getting worse, but also more "flem-like" (sorry TMI!)

DS (8 months) has severe reflux, is on 2 meds for it. We started weaning at 20 weeks and it didn't help other than make the sick thicker and the choking worse. I have a fab reflux book called 'colic solved' and it says a third get worse on solids, a third get better and a third stay the same. I think mild reflux sometimes improves more.
