puree type weaning - some advice?

Hi, I've been giving my 5 month old banana/baby rice/formula mush for breakfast for a couple of weeks, which he really loves. I've tried doing savoury, he ate a bit of carrot and potato but would not eat mashed potato by itself. He's young so I wanted to keep the flavours simple, but I'm wondering whether I should just try pureeing some grown up food to see what he makes of it. What did other people do? He had strawberry one day and loved it but I want to get some savoury flavours in there! What has been a hit with other babies?

Thanks! I think I'll buy some things like butternut squash and sweet potato and see how he likes them. I would buy the jars but maternity leave is squeezing me dry as it is, and bloody formula is so expensive!

Kat - come over to the puree lovers thread and post in there/look through the advice and recipes...

was there any specific reason why you started early?

not really - but he had a bad start (poor BM supply + stubborn mum = very skinny baby) and I just thought that since there are no inherent benefits to extending exclusive formula feeding to 6 months (unlike ex BF which is obvious) I would try him on some food to see how it went rather than up his bottles. He's properly chubby now and very interested in eating, so I think it was right for him.
