Weaning

What kind of mix of solids/ milk should I be aiming for?

At the moment my DD has two solid meals a day, one at lunchtime and one about an hour and a half before bed. She also has milk every 3 or 4 hours.

She isn't taking much solid food but seems to enjoy it and I am fine with that, I am just wondering if I should be aiming to introduce three meals a day plus milk so milk can eventually be dropped or replaced with snacks.

She will be going to nursery in January and I have no idea what is 'normal'.

Sorry, she is 6 months old - for some reason I edited that out. She has only just started solids and I hadn't looked any further than my excitement about trying her on different foods and it suddenly occurred to me there was probably a mix to aim for.

Thanks.

well milk is still her primary source of nutrition, and will be till she's 1, so even if you offer more solids don't cut back on the amount of milk you offer

nursery will be used to babies at all stages of weaning so do not feel you have to force her into it in readiness

nearer the time (like December) visit the nursery and see what their meal / milk / snack routines are and see how they match with dds.

When DS was about 6.5 - 7 months, though he looked like he was enjoying his food, he never took a lot. He was also having 4 milk feeds then (7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm). I dropped the 11am feed (very reluctantly!) and he started to eat more with only 3 milk feeds. Now he is 8 months and eats a decent amount, it does take time and sometimes dropping a milk feed does help. It's a delicate balance and you just need to find one that works for you!

At that age, the nursery should go with your DD's routine. All four nurseries I have visited have said they will follow your child's routine as at that age, they shouldn't be forced into one set routine. GL!

Thanks MrsBadger and Angel.

I think she is going through a growth spurt at the moment which doesn't help (hence the ridiculous amounts of milk she is getting through). Part of my thinking is that she is having extra milk at the moment as she seems to need feeding more often and solids (Although as I said just small amounts). It is all change, each day is different to the next.

I have a meeting at the nursery next week so I guess I can talk to them about it.
